Notes: Abstract By judicious imposition of longitudinal mode control onto a resonator cavity, the Q-value of which increases with decreasing wavelength in the 11 to 9 μm region, simultaneous oscillation was obtained on all the four branches from a hybrid CO2 laser when its low pressure section operates in the sub-threshold condition. In the above threshold operation of this section, the hybrid laser lases simultaneously only on 9P, 9R, and 10P branch lines.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents a signaling and control architecture for mobility support in a “wireless ATM” network that provides integrated broadband services to mobile terminals. A system level protocol architecture for a wireless ATM network is outlined. The proposed protocol stack incorporates new wireless link MAC, DLC and wireless control sublayers, together with appropriate mobility extensions to the existing ATM network control layer. Wireless control and ATM signaling capabilities required for mobility support are discussed, and preliminary solutions are given for selected major functions. Potential extensions to standard Q.2931 ATM signaling are proposed to support handoff and service parameter/QoS renegotiation required for mobility. An associated wireless control protocol for supporting terminal migration, resource allocation, and handoff is discussed. Preliminary experimental results are given which validate the proposed handoff control protocol on an ATM network testbed.

Notes: Abstract The steady state throughput performance of distributed applications deployed in switched networks in presence of end‐system bottlenecks is studied in this paper. The effect of various limitations at an end‐system is modelled as an equivalent transmission capacity limitation. A class of distributed applications is characterised by a static traffic distribution matrix that determines the communication between various components of the application. It is found that uniqueness of steady state throughputs depends only on the traffic distribution matrix and that some applications (e.g., broadcast applications) can yield non‐unique values for the steady state component throughputs. For a given switch capacity, with traffic distribution that yield fair unique throughputs, the trade‐off between the end‐system capacity and the number of application components is brought out. With a proposed distributed rate control, it has been illustrated that it is possible to have unique solution for certain traffic distributions which is otherwise impossible. Also, by proper selection of rate control parameters, various throughput performance objectives can be realised.

Notes: Abstract Electrooxidation of methanol in 1 m NaOH at 30°C was studied on graphite-supported platinum electrodes prepared both in hydrogen and in air at various temperatures. Heating in hydrogen always produced higher surface area of Pt, and hence greater mass activity, than in air at a particular temperature. Nevertheless, both the graphite-supported platinum electrodes exhibited almost the same specific activity as a smooth Pt electrode for methanol electrooxidation irrespective of the preparation conditions. This indicates that the difference in mass activity is due to different surface areas produced by the different preparation methods. The Tafel slope of 110 mV decade−1 on all the electrodes studied indicated that the first charge transfer process was the rate-determining step.

Notes: Abstract A Total Solar Eclipse (TSE) was observed from Diamond Harbour (lat. 22.2°N, long 88.2°E) on 24 October 1995. The variation of γ-ray intensity was measured in the energy range of 0.3–3.0 MeV for different time spans throughout the period of the eclipse. A CR-39 detector was used to look at the change in the fluxes of neutral and charged particles. The maximum drop (∼ 25%) in the intensity of γ-ray was observed in the range 2.5–3 MeV during TSE. The CR-39 results showed the appearance of a good number of tracks and a small variation of proton and neutron flux of ≤ 10% which was not significant statistically. Low energy γ-ray fluxes at sea level originate from the secondary electron-photon components of cosmic rays in the atmosphere; its modulation by TSE is interpreted as follows. The cooling of the atmosphere in the path of the umbra induces a reduction of the height of the main production layer of the nuclear component, as a result of which, fewer µ± mesons (from the decay of theπ± mesons) decay to e±. This leads to a small reduction in the flux of electron-photon component at sea level which originates from this branch; the main branch of e - γ component from π0 decay remains nearly unaffected. As the total mass of air remains the same, little or no change in the slow proton or the neutron flux at sea level is expected. These are consistent with the present observations. For a better understanding, further studies of this new phenomenon during future TSE are suggested.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Reduktion der Titelverbindung (2) mit Diboran ergibt 1-Trifluoroethyl-3-(2′-(trifluoroethylamino)ethyl)-3-vinylindolin (4), 1-Hydroxy-trifluoroethyl-3-(2′-(trifluoroethylamino)ethyl)indol (5) und 1-Methyl-2-trifluoroethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carbolin (6).
Notes: Summary Reduction of the title compound (2) with diborane furnishes 1-trifluoroethyl-3-(2′-(trifluoroethylamino)ethyl)-3-vinylindoline (4), 1-hydroxy-trifluoroethyl-3-(2′-(trifluoroethylamino)ethyl)indole (5), and 1-methyl-2-trifluoroethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carboline (6). However, treatment of2 with lithium aluminum hydride, H2/Pd on charcoal, and sodium borohydride affords hydroxyspiroindolenine8, hydroxy-bis(trifluoroacetyl)enaminospiroindoline9, andN-ethyltryptamine7, respectively. The results are discussed and the mechanisms of the reactions leading to4–8 are presented.

Notes: Summary The number of carbons represented by each signal of the phenylindoles1,4, and5 is measured quantitatively by integration of their13C NMR spectra, recorded after adding chromium(III) acetylacetonate to the sample solutions as a paramagnetic relaxation agent. Their carbon chemical shifts are assigned unambiguously; the literature assignments of4 are confirmed. By a comparative study of the carbon chemical shifts of1,4, and5, those of2 and3 are also assigned. Theortho carbons of the phenyl group of4 resonate upfield with respect to thepara carbon. Theortho carbons of the 2- and 3-phenyl moieties of1–3 and5, however, are found to absorb downfield from the correspondingpara carbons, probably because of steric and/or electronic effects exerted by their neighbouring phenyl group.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary.  5,11-Dihydro-5,11-dibenzyl-6-trifluoromethylindolo[3,2-b]carbazole (6) and the cyclic N-benzylindole trimer 4 were synthesized from both N-benzylindole-3-methanol (1) and N,N′-dibenzyl-3,3′-diindolylmethane (2) by treatment with trifluoroacetic anhydride. The former also gave the 36-membered cyclic N-benzylindole tetramer 7, and the latter furnished N-benzyl-3-trifluoroacetylindole (8). Heating 1 in aqueous methanol also yielded the trimer 4 along with 2, the N-benzylitriindolyldimethane 3, and the N-benzyltetraindolyltrimethane 5 whose structure and solid-state conformation were determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. The results are discussed and plausible mechanisms of the reactions leading to 3–8 are presented.
