Notes: Abstract: We have performed several kinds of DNA walks which often are the first steps for further analysis of DNA structure and long range correlations. The DNA walks analysing frequency of G+C versus A+T cannot indicate the coding strand while purine versus pyrimidine DNA walks or two-dimensional (A-T,G-C) DNA walks in some instances can indicate the coding strand but cannot resolve the coding frame. The modified two-dimensional (A-T,G-C) DNA walks respecting the three-nucleotide codon structure show very high correlation in nucleotide composition of DNA coding sequences. They can distinguish between coding and non-coding sequences and indicate the strand and the phase in which DNA is coding.

Notes: Abstract G. Grätzer and A. Kisielewicz devoted one section of their survey paper concerning p n-sequences and free spectra of algebras to the topic “Small idempotent clones” (see Section 6 of [18]). Many authors, e.g., [8], [14, 15], [22], [25] and [29, 30] were interested in p n-sequences of idempotent algebras with small rates of growth. In this paper we continue this topic and characterize all idempotent groupoids (G, ·) with p 2(G, ·) ≤ 2 (see Section 7). Such groupoids appear in many papers see, e.g. [1], [4], [21], [26, 27], [25], [28, 30, 31, 32] and [34].

Notes: Abstract. We prove in this paper that a commutative idempotent groupoid is a proper Płonka sum of affine spaces over GF(3) if and only if it has 27 essentially 4-ary term functions. This means, in another terminology, that the number 27 is the characteristic number of those sums in the variety of all commutative idempotent groupoids. Using this result, we also show that a medial idempotent groupoid with three essentially binary operations contains a subgroupoid term equivalent to either the five-element affine space over GF(5) or a Płonka sum of a trivial groupoid and the three-element affine space over GF(3).

Notes: Abstract Practical application of Solid-Phase Microextraction (SPME) for the assessment of the quality of indoor air is presented. SPME was used to sample selected organic pollutants (carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene, chlorobenzene, p-xylene and n-decane). An SPME fiber was coated with a 100 μm film of polydimethylsiloxane. The analytes extracted were analysed with a gas chromatograph directly coupled with a mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The method was used to assess the indoor air quality in a few selected flats. The concentrations ranged from below detection limits to 6.9 mg/m3 for benzene depending on the flat; they were relatively high for newly built or freshly renovated flats.

Notes: Abstract In SiC–SCS-6-fibre-reinforced IMI834 alloys, a high thermal stability of tensile properties and of the fibre–matrix interface for temperatures up to 700 °C was reported. In the present paper, the interface of these composites is investigated by analytical transmission electron microscopy in the as-processed condition and after a thermal treatment at 700 °C for 2000 h and at 800 °C for 500 h. The interface in (SiC–SCS-6)–IMI834 composites consists of two layers: the TiC reaction zone with a thickness of about 0.4 μm and a layer of a (Ti, Zr)xSiy phase with a thickness of about ∼0.1 μm. The energy-dispersive electron beam analysis of the (Ti, Zr)xSiy layer results in a (Ti, Zr)2Si phase with a Ti-to-Zr ratio of approximately 1.4. Electron beam diffraction of the (Ti, Zr)xSiy layer identifies it as S2 silicides present in near-α alloys. The thermal stability of the interface in the (SiC–SCS-6)–IMI834 composites is ensured by the continuous coating of the (Ti, Zr)xSiy phase. This is the case for a thermal treatment at temperatures up to 700 °C for 2000 h. After the treatment at 800 °C for 500 h, the thickness of the TiC reaction zone is increased, gaps in the (Ti, Zr)xSiy layer appear, titanium carbide grows further into the titanium matrix and the thermal stability of the interface is lost.
