Notes: Abstract The effect of cationic micelles of benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium chloride and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide on the fluorescence spectra of indole and its carboxylic derivatives were determined. The larger solute-micelle binding constants were provided by benzyldimethylhexadecylammonium chloride, ranging from 0.10·105 and 2.15·105 M −1 for indole-5-carboxylic and indole-2-carboxylic acid, respectively. The determination of indole-4-carboxylic acid with a detection limit of 1.0 ng ml−1, in the presence of the 3-and 5-substituted derivatives, shows the analytical potential of the synchronous spectrofluorimetry combined with the enhancement effects caused by micellar media.

Notes: Abstract. Genetic engineering, coupled with spectro scopic analyses, has enabled the metal binding proper ties of the α and β subunits of mouse metallothionein 1 (MT) to be characterized. A heterologous expression system in E.coli has led to high yields of their pure zinc-complexed forms. The cadmium(II) binding properties of recombinant Zn4-αMT and Zn3-βMT have been studied by electronic absorption and circular dichroism. The former binds Cd(II) identically to α fragments obtained from mammalian organs, showing that the recombinant polypeptide behaves like the na tive protein. Titration of Zn3-βMT with CdCl2 results in the formation of Cd3-βMT. The addition of excess Cd(II) leads to Cd4-βMT which, with the extra loading of Cd(II), unravels to give rise isodichroically to Cd9-βMT. The effect of cadmium-displaced Zn(II) ions and excess Cd(II) above the full metal occupancy of three has been studied using Chelex-100. The Cd3-βMT species is stable in the presence of this strong metal-chelating agent.

Notes: Abstract Three-hourly average values of the Dst, AE and ap geomagnetic activity indices have been studied for 1 year’s duration near the solar minimum (1974) and also at the solar maximum (1979). In 1979 seven intense geomagnetic storms (Dst 〈 –100 nT) occurred, whereas in 1974 only three were reported. This study reveals: (1) the yearly average of AE is greater in 1974 than in 1979, whereas the inverse seems to be true for the yearly average of Dst, when a higher number of intense storms is present. These averages indicate the kind of activity occurring on the sun as shown in earlier work. (2) The seasonal variation of Dst is higher than that of ap and is almost negligible in AE. (3) The correlation coefficient of ap × AE is in general the highest, as the magnetometers that monitor both indices are close, and is surpassed only by the ap × Dst correlation during geomagnetic storms, when the influence of the ring current is dominant. The correlation of ap × Dst also shows a seasonal variability. (4) For the first time a study of correlation between ap and a linear combination of AE and Dst has also been made. We found higher correlation coefficients in this case as compared to those between ap × Dst and ap ×xs AE.

Notes: Abstract We present some results of the analytical integration of the energy rate balance equation, assuming that the input energy rate is proportional to the azimuthal interplanetary electric field, Ey, and can be described by simple rectangular or triangular functions, as approximations to the frequently observed shapes of Ey, especially during the passage of magnetic clouds. The input function is also parametrized by a reconnection-transfer efficiency factor α (which is assumed to vary between 0.1 and 1). Our aim is to solve the balance equation and derive values for the decay parameter τ compatible with the observed Dst peak values. To facilitate the analytical integration we assume a constant value for τ through the main phase of the storm. The model is tested for two isolated and well-monitored intense storms. For these storms the analytical results are compared to those obtained by the numerical integration of the balance equation, based on the interplanetary data collected by the ISEE-3 satellite, with the τ values parametrized close to those obtained by the analytical study. From the best fit between this numerical integration and the observed Dst the most appropriate values of τ are then determined. Although we specifically focus on the main phase of the storms, this numerical integration has been also extended to the recovery phase by an independent adjust. The results of the best fit for the recovery phase show that the values of τ may differ drastically from those corresponding to the main phase. The values of the decay parameter for the main phase of each event, τm, are found to be very sensitive to the adopted efficiency factor, α, decreasing as this factor increases. For the recovery phase, which is characterized by very low values of the power input, the response function becomes almost independent of the value of α and the resulting values for the decay time parameter, τr, do not vary greatly as α varies. As a consequence, the relative values of τ between the main and the recovery phase, τm/τr, can be greater or smaller than one as α varies from 0.1 to 1.

Notes: Abstract  Interleukin-8 is a chemokine with a potent neutrophil chemoatractant activity. In humans, two different cDNAs encoding human IL8 receptors designated IL8RA and IL8RB have been cloned. IL8RA binds IL8, while IL8RB binds IL8 as well as other α-chemokines. Both human IL8Rs are encoded by two genes physically linked on chromosome 2. The IL8RA and IL8RB genes have open reading frames (ORF) lacking introns. By direct sequencing of the polymerase chain reaction products, we sequenced the IL8R genes of cell lines from four non-human primates: chimpanzee, gorilla, orangutan, and macaca. The IL8RB encodes an ORF in the four non-human primates, showing 95% – 99% similarity to the human IL8RB sequence. The IL8RA homologue in gorilla and chimpanzee consisted of two ORF 98% – 99% identical to the human sequence. The macaca and orangutan IL8RA homologues are pseudogenes: a 2 base pair insertion generated a sequence with several stop codons. In addition, we describe the physical linkage of these genes in the four non-human primates and discuss the evolutionary implications of these findings.

Notes: Abstract The aim of this work was to study the thermal transitions of several manganese oxides (MnO, MnOOH, Mn2O3, Mn3O4 and MnO2) under reducing conditions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to analyse the transitions of some oxides into others. A comparison of the behavior of the synthetic samples with that of a natural manganese dioxide demonstrated that DSC is a quick tool for the distinction of natural manganese dioxide from synthetic γ-MnO2 from other manganese oxides.

Notes: Abstract Thermal decomposition of various synthetic manganese oxides (MnO, Mn3O4, Mn2O3, MnOOH) and a natural manganese dioxide (MnO2) from Gabon was studied with the help of termogravimetry in inert, oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. The compounds were characterized by XRD and electrochemical activity was tested by cyclic voltammetry using a carbon paste electrode. The natural manganese dioxide showed the best oxidizing and reducing capacity, confirmed by the lower temperatures of the transitions, the extent of the reactions and electrochemical performance in cyclic voltammograms.
