    Notes: The microstructural factors limiting the critical current density Jc have been investigated for the silver-sheathed Bi2223 tapes prepared by the powder-in-tube technique. In a hierarchy among them, which factor is the most effective in determining Jc depends on how extensively each of them occurs. The Jc was found to increase when the volume fraction of 2223 phase increases, suggesting the importance of the connectivity among 2223 grains. The Jc also increased with decreasing amount of residual carbon. The temperature and magnetic field dependences of Jc indicated characteristics of Josephson currents through superconducting–normal–superconducting barriers. After a discussion based on the alternative current limiting mechanisms proposed up to now, it is suggested that the homophase grain boundary limits the Jc. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A nonpolymer material, calixarene derivative (hexaacetate p-methnylcalix[6]arene) was tested as a high-resolution negative resist under an electron beam lithography process. It showed under 10-mm resolution with little side roughness and high durability to halide plasma etching. A sub-10-nm Ge quantum wire was perfectly etched off without defects. Such a performance is suitable for nanoscale device processes. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report the self-developing properties of an AlF3-doped LiF inorganic resist under irradiation by a scanning electron beam with an energy of 20–50 keV are reported. The self-development properties strongly depended on both AlF3 concentration and film thickness. To explain this behavior, we presented an exposure model that takes into account a balance between a carbon contamination and a diffusion process. By optimizing resist qualities, we were able to delineate 5 nm linewidth patterns with 60 nm periodicity using a 30 kV electron beam. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have investigated the lateral thermal oxidation of AlAs in water vapor in vertical cavity surface emitting laser structures. At low temperatures and short oxidation times, oxide growth was found to be reaction rate limited. Conversely, diffusion across the oxide was the rate controlling mechanism at higher temperatures and longer oxidation times. Lasers are typically processed at intermediate values of temperatures and time. The observed growth can be modeled by rate equations by which the two component growth mechanisms can be separated. Activation energies of 1.6 and 0.8 eV were determined for the reaction rate and diffusion limited mechanisms, respectively. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A truncated-inverted-pyramid (TIP) chip geometry provides substantial improvement in light extraction efficiency over conventional AlGaInP/GaP chips of the same active junction area (∼0.25 mm2). The TIP geometry decreases the mean photon path-length within the crystal, and thus reduces the effects of internal loss mechanisms. By combining this improved device geometry with high-efficiency multiwell active layers, record-level performance for visible-spectrum light-emitting diodes is achieved. Peak efficiencies exceeding 100 lm/W are demonstrated (100 mA dc, 300 K) for orange-emitting (λp∼610 nm) devices, with a peak luminous flux of 60 lumens (350 mA dc, 300 K). In the red wavelength regime (λp∼650 nm), peak external quantum efficiencies of 55% and 60.9% are measured under direct current and pulsed operation, respectively (100 mA, 300 K). © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Mouse monoclonal antibody (mAb) Pgf-II specific for a 72-kDa major cell-surface protein (72K-CSP) derived from Porphyromonas gingivalis OMZ 409 was prepared. Immunoblotting analysis revealed that mAb Pgf-II reacted with 72K-CSP but not with 41-kDa fimbrial subunit protein (41K-fimbrilin) derived from P. gingivalis 381. Electron microscopic observation revealed that P. gingivalis OMZ 409 possessed peritrichous, thin fimbriae on their surface. Immunogold electron microscopy also demonstrated that mAb Pgf-II bound to the 72K-CSP examined with the gold particles arranged along the fibril array originating from the cell surface of the bacteria. These findings suggested that P. gingivalis 72K-CSP was identifiable as another fimbriae (termed Pg-II fimbriae) different from the fimbriae (termed Pg-I fimbriae) composed of a 41K-fimbrilin. Using multipin peptide synthesis technology, 102 sequential overlapping peptides covering the entire 514 amino-acid stretch of Pg-II fimbriae were synthesised. Seven immunodominant regions within Pg-II fimbrial protein molecule, which definitely reacted with the serum of patients with periodontal diseases, were detected.

    Notes: Abstract We previously established murine hybridomas producing a monoclonal antibody monospecific against three glucosyl-transferases (I, SI and S) of Streptococcus mutans which contribute to dental caries formation. Here, we developed a new immunochemical technique (cross-dot system) with which individual levels of glucosyltransferases expressed by S. mutans can be evaluated. We also examined glucosyltransferase production and in vitro artificial plaque formation by a reference strain and several clinical isolates of S. mutans. The findings indicate that the levels of glucosyltransferases produced greatly vary with the cells and the culture medium, and that the cells producing high levels of both glucosyltransferase-SI and glucosyltransferase-I enzymes may possess high in vitro artificial plaque forming ability. We suggest that the cross-dot system will be useful for estimating the cariogenic potential of S. mutans isolates.
