    Notes: Abstract Five radiocarbon ages, all determined by accelerator mass spectrometry, have been obtained for two pre-bomb bivalves from Lake Michigan and one from Lake Huron. After correcting those ages for the fractionation of14C in calcite and for the radioactively inert CO2 in the atmosphere, we find residual ages, caused by the hard water effect, of about 250 years for Lake Michigan and 440 years for Lake Huron.

    Notes: Abstract Siliceous microfossil assemblage succession was analyzed in a 100 m sediment core from Lake Baikal, Siberia. The core was recovered from the lake's central basin at a water depth of 365 m. Microfossil abundance varied greatly within the intervals sampled, ranging from samples devoid of siliceous microfossils to samples with up to 3.49 × 1011 microfossils g-1 sediment. Fluctuations in abundance appear to reflect trends in the marine δ18O record, with peak microfossil levels generally representing climate optima. Microfossil taxa present in sampled intervals changed considerably with core depth. Within each sample a small number of endemic diatom species dominated the assemblage. Changes in dominant endemic taxa between sampled intervals ranged from extirpation of some taxa, to shifts in quantitative abundance. Differences in microfossil composition and the association of variations in abundance with climate fluctuations suggest rapid speciation in response to major climatic excursions.

    Notes: Abstract Biogenic silica contents of sediments on the lower Selenga Delta and Buguldeika saddle in Lake Baikal show distinct fluctuations that reflect changes in diatom productivity, and ultimately, climate. The pattern of the upper 50 m of the section, dating from about 334 ka, is similar to that of the marine oxygen-isotope record, increasingly so as the younger sediments become progressively finer grained and less locally derived with time. The last two interglaciations are marked by biogenic silica abundances similar to those of the Holocene. The equivalent of marine oxygen-isotope stage 3 is distinctly intermediate in character between full glacial and full interglacial biogenic silica values. Following near-zero values during the last glacial maximum, biogenic silica began to increase at about 13 ka. The rise in biogenic silica to Holocene values was interrupted by an abrupt decrease during Younger Dryas time, about 11 to 10 14C ka.

    Notes: Abstract  The success of an ENSO-based statistical rainfall prediction scheme and the influence of ENSO on Australia are shown to vary in association with a coherent, inter-decadal oscillation in surface temperature over the Pacific Ocean. When this Inter-decadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) raises temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean, there is no robust relationship between year-to-year Australian climate variations and ENSO. When the IPO lowers temperature in the same region, on the other hand, year-to-year ENSO variability is closely associated with year-to-year variability in rainfall, surface temperature, river flow and the domestic wheat crop yield. The contrast in ENSO’s influence between the two phases of the IPO is quite remarkable. This highlights exciting new avenues for obtaining improved climate predictions.

    Notes: Abstract.  A method is described for evaluating the ‘partial derivatives’ of globally averaged top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiation changes with respect to basic climate model physical parameters. This method is used to analyse feedbacks in the Australian Bureau of Meteorology Research Centre general circulation model. The parameters considered are surface temperature, water vapour, lapse rate and cloud cover. The climate forcing which produces the changes is a globally uniform sea surface temperature (SST) perturbation. The first and second order differentials of model parameters with respect to the forcing (i.e. SST changes) are estimated from quadratic least square fitting. Except for total cloud cover, variables are found to be strong functions of global SST. Strongly non-linear variations of lapse rate and high cloud amount and height appear to relate to the non-linear response in penetrative convection. Globally averaged TOA radiation differentials with respect to model parameters are also evaluated. With the exception of total cloud contributions, a high correlation is generally found to exist, on the global mean level, between TOA radiation and the respective parameter perturbations. The largest non-linear terms contributing to radiative changes are those due to lapse rate and high cloud. The contributions of linear and non-linear terms to the overall radiative response from a 4 K SST perturbation are assessed. Significant non-linear responses are found to be associated with lapse rate, water vapour and cloud changes. Although the exact magnitude of these responses is likely to be a function of the particular model as well as the imposed SST perturbation pattern, the present experiments flag these as processes which cannot properly be understood from linear theory in the evaluation of climate change sensitivity.

    Notes: Abstract  Aqueous distillation as a pre-extraction step for monomethyl mercury (MMHg) in waters and sediments is the most common method because it eliminates negative interferences in the aqueous ethylation procedure. However, the distillation procedure generates a positive MMHg artifact as a result of the action of naturally occurring organic substances on inorganic Hg in the sample. Methylation of Hg(II) does not occur in deionized water samples, indicating that the artifact is not due to the distillation itself or the reagents added (ammonium pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate, HCl), but rather to naturally occurring organic matter. Methylation of Hg(II) spikes ranged from 0.001% for rainwater and oligotrophic lake water to 0.08% for brown, humic-rich water. Methylation of Hg(II) spikes in sediments ranged from 0.005 to 0.1%, with the highest conversions in wetland peat. In most water samples, the artifact is not significant, as the ambient concentration of MMHg is 1–10% of the total, well above the contribution due to the artifact. The artifact may be significant in sediments and in Hg-contaminated water samples, where the measured fraction of MMHg is less than 1% of the total. The best of six alternative techniques involves leaching with KBr/H2SO4/CuSO4 and extraction into CH2Cl2, followed by back extraction into water, and subsequent ethylation.

    Notes: Abstract Platelet aggregation is important for maintaining normal hemostasis. However, aberrant platelet aggegation plays a major role in acute coronary artery diseases, myocardial infarction, unstable angina, and stroke. ADP is one of the earliest and most important platelet agonists. ADP induces platelet aggregation, shape change, secretion, influx and intracellular mobilization of Ca2+, and inhibition of the adenylyl cyclase stimulated by prostaglandins. Binding of ADP to purinergic receptor(s) is required for elicitation of the ADP-induced platelet responses. But the platelet ADP receptor(s) has not been purified, largely due to the unavailability of the reagents that can be used to selectively label the platelet ADP receptor. The ADP receptor responsible for the ADP-induced platelet aggregation and inhibition of stimulated adenylyl cyclase activity has not been cloned due to difficulties in screening responsive clones generated from a cDNA library. Since the purified ADP-receptor protein is not available, antibodies that can be used as alternative tools to purify the ADP receptor or screen the clones expressing the receptor could not be made. In addition, the problem may be compounded by the low copy number and the susceptibility of the receptor to proteolysis. Therefore, signal transduction mechanisms underlying biochemical transformations in ADP-induced platelet responses remain less well defined and/less well understood. In the past decade efforts have been made to identify a platelet ADP receptor(s) by photoaffinity as well as affinity labeling by the ADP-affinity analogs. More recently efforts have been directed to clone the platelet ADP receptors. These investigations, however, have not produced definite results. The purpose of this review is to examine the results obtained by the photoaffinity- and affinity-labeling investigations and cloning experiments to identify a platelet ADP receptor(s).

    Notes: Abstract Domain 3 (D3) of human kininogens, the major cysteine proteinase inhibitors in plasma, has been shown to be the tightest binding inhibitory domain for cathepsins B and H. D3 was expressed in three fragments as its exon products as follows: exon 7 (Gly235-Gln292), exon 8 (Gln292-Gly328), and exon 9 (Gln329-Met357). Exon products 7, 8, and 9 alone as well as exon product 7 + 9 each exhibited an IC50 value 5- to 30-fold higher (5–30μM) than exon products 7 + 8 and 8 + 9 (0.9–1.3μM) for cathepsins B and H, respectively. However, in turn, the exon products 7 + 8 and 8 + 9 seemed to be less potent inhibitors than the intact D3 (10, 200 nM) or HK (200, 500 nM) molecule. These results clearly indicate that an intact molecule of HK or its domain 3 as a whole is required for optimal inhibition of cathepsins B and H.

    Notes: Abstract Payoff dominance, a criterion for choosing between equilibrium points in games, is intuitively compelling, especially in matching games and other games of common interests, but it has not been justified from standard game-theoretic rationality assumptions. A psychological explanation of it is offered in terms of a form of reasoning that we call the Stackelberg heuristic in which players assume that their strategic thinking will be anticipated by their co-player(s). Two-person games are called Stackelberg-soluble if the players' strategies that maximize against their co-players' best replies intersect in a Nash equilibrium. Proofs are given that every game of common interests is Stackelberg-soluble, that a Stackelberg solution is always a payoff-dominant outcome, and that in every game with multiple Nash equilibria a Stackelberg solution is a payoff-dominant equilibrium point. It is argued that the Stackelberg heuristic may be justified by evidentialist reasoning.

    Notes: Abstract Significant technical limitations inherent in blackbody infrared technology used in conventional sidestream and mainstream capnography have hindered the acceptance and growth of capnography as a monitoring tool outside the operating room environment. We describe a new technology (Microstream™) for CO2 monitoring, based on molecular correlation spectroscopy, which results in a highly efficient and selective emission of a spectrum of discrete wavelengths exactly matching those for CO2 absorption. The CO2 specific emissions allow for an extremely small sample cell (15 µl), which in turn, permits the use of a very low sample flow rate (50 ml/min) without compromising waveform integrity or end-tidal CO2 accuracy. Design and technology features of the CO2 emission source, sample cell, and breath sampling circuits are described.
