    Description: We deployed CO2 and O2 sensors on the U.S. continental shelf off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, during late summer 1994. A continuous 32‐d gas record was obtained at 20 m in 25 m of water, below the thermocline for most of the period. Analysis of the correlation between CO2 and O2 indicates that biological and advective processes dominated the gas variability, with small or insignificant fluxes due to air–sea exchange, vertical eddy diffusion, and carbonate dissolution or formation. The observed O2 : CO2 correlation was 1.39, within the range predicted for the photosynthetic quotient. Photosynthesis and respiration appeared to be tightly coupled, resulting in no net community production in these waters during the late summer. It is evident from these results that the combination of mooring‐based CO2 and O2 measurements will be a powerful tool for studying the marine carbon cycle.

    Description: The importance of the south-west coast of Portugal as a spawning ground for the long-finned squid, Loligo vulgaris, was investigated between May 1993 and May 1994 at a site 3 Km East of Sagres. Hydrographic (temperature and salinity) observations were registered in situ and water samples were collected for laboratory determinations of chlorophyll a. Zooplankton was sampled with a 500 mm plankton net during 10mn trawls. Hydrographic and biological information was related to the occurrence of L. vulgaris egg masses at the site. The values of water temperature ranged from 13.0º C in January to 19.2º C in July, and the salinity varied between 35.3o/oo in May of 1993 and 38.0 o/oo, in November, December and March. The highest values for phytoplankton biomass were recorded in September and May, whereas the maximum zooplankton abundance was recorded between July and September. The most important zooplankton groups included cladocerans, copepods, crustacean larvae, fish eggs and appendicularians. We have concluded that the highest values for zooplankton abundance were recorded when the greater number of egg masses of L. vulgaris were observed.

    Description: Nine species belonging to three genera of the subfamily Sepiolinae (Leach, 1817) were collected in the Strait of Sicily by two series of bottom trawl surveys carried out during the years 1985-87 and 1992: Sepiola rondeletii, Sepiola intermedia, Sepiola ligulata, Sepiola robusta, Sepiola affinis, Sepietta oweniana, Sepietta neglecta, Sepietta obscura and Rondeletiola minor. For each species, abundance, distribution, sex ratio and maturity condition were analysed. S. oweniana was the most abundant species, followed by R. minor, while the single record of S. ligulata indicates that the species is rare in the area. The bathymetric distributions observed generally agree with what is known for the species from the literature, but present data support the extension of the bathymetric range inhabited by S. robusta (down to 498 m). Mature specimens represented 81.8% of the examined sample, and no substantial differences in the percentages of mature individuals with season was noticeable; this supports the existence of an extended reproductive period in the Sepiolines.

    Description: Fish and cephalopod taxa occurring in association with Loligo vulgaris, in Portuguese waters between Lisbon and Vila Real de Santo António, were investigated by sampling with bottom trawling equipment between 1990-1991 and 1993-1995. The family Triglidae, the genera Pagellus and Trachurus and the four species Alloteuthis subulata, Boops boops, Callionymus lyra, and Merluccius merluccius were found, on average, in at least 75% of the trawls with L. vulgaris. Conversely, that cephalopod was found in at least 75% of the trawls with the family Trachinidae, the genera Dentex, Diplodus, Liza and Torpedo and the six species, Hyperoplus lanceolatus, Pagrus pagrus, Pomatoschistus m. minutus, Psetta m. maxima, Scophthalmus rhombus and Spicara flexuosa. An index of "affinity" (ranging from -∞ to 1) between L. vulgaris and the other taxa was used in order to highlight co-occurrences of an unlikely coincidental nature. Lists of taxa with high affinity index scores (0.5 to 1) are given for 5 different situations: all samples together; samples grouped by bottom depth; samples grouped by research cruise; research cruises grouped by season and by year. Pair wise comparisons between all taxa lists for each of the 5 situations were made, indicating a greater influence of depth than any other factor in the composition of the lists. The significance of the degree of similarity between lists of taxa, "preferred" under different circumstances and the reasons for those "preferences" are discussed.

    Description: Length composition, age, growth, reproductive biology, feeding and parasites were studied using 432 individuals of the squid Ornithoteuthis antillarum (1.8-138 mm ML) collected in the open waters of the tropical central-east Atlantic. In the region studied, only a small-sized and early-maturing population of O. antillarum occur. Statolith shape, development and microstructure have several peculiar features setting O. antillarum apart of other ommastrephids. Assuming growth increments within statoliths to be daily, maximum age of squids does not exceed 182 days. Growth rates of juveniles and immature squids are high and similar to another fast-growing ommastrephid Sthenoteuthis pteropus, but they decrease considerably with the onset of maturation. Potential fecundity varies from 50,000 to 220,000 oocytes. It is suggested that the squid is a multiple spawner with frequent releases of small-sized (〈1,500 eggs) egg masses. O. antillarum can be characterized as a browsing predator, feeding on all available relatively small prey (mainly amphipods as well as larvae and fries of carnivorous fish) in the thermocline and below. O. antillarum is infected mainly by didymozoid trematodes, the intensity of infection being 10-50 times less than in the same-sized S. pteropus. The life cycle of O. antillarum is discussed.
