    Notes: Variability arises due to differences in the value of a quantity among different members of a population. Uncertainty arises due to lack of knowledge regarding the true value of a quantity for a given member of a population. We describe and evaluate two methods for quantifying both variability and uncertainty. These methods, bootstrapsimulation and a likelihood-based method, are applied to three datasets. The datasetsinclude a synthetic sample of 19 values from a Lognormal distribution, a sample of nine values obtained from measurements of the PCB concentration in leafy produce, and asample of five values for the partitioning of chromium in the flue gas desulfurization system of coal-fired power plants. For each of these datasets, we employ the two methods to characterize uncertainty in the arithmetic mean and standard deviation, cumulative distribution functions based upon fitted parametric distributions, the 95th percentile of variability, and the 63rd percentile of uncertainty for the 81st percentile of variability. The latter is intended to show that it is possible to describe anypoint within the uncertain frequency distribution by specifying an uncertainty percentile and a Variability percentile. Using the bootstrap method, we compare results based upon use of the method of matching moments and the method of maximum likelihood for fitting distributions to data. Our results indicate that with only 5-19 data pointsas in the datasets we have evaluated, there is substantial uncertainty based upon random sampling error. Both the boostrap and likelihood-based approaches yield comparable uncertainty estimates in most cases.

    Notes: Cluster ion distributions of water in a molecular beam are investigated by femtosecond ionization at 780 nm and reflectron time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The electric field strength generated by the ultrashort laser pulses is sufficient to efficiently ionize most of the molecules that are present in the molecular beam. In this work ion signals of large water clusters containing up to 60 monomers are reported. Upon ionization rapid proton transfer is observed, leading to the formation of protonated water cluster ions. Unprotonated clusters (H2O)n+(n〉2) are not observed in the mass spectra. The configurational energy imparted to the protonated clusters induces unimolecular dissociation on the μs time scale. These metastable reactions are characterized by modeling the ion trajectories in the mass spectrometer. The numerical procedure in conjunction with the integrated parent and daughter intensities results in unimolecular dissociation rates as a function of cluster size. Additional information about proton transfer reactions is obtained by the investigation of deuterium substitutions. Even though these substitutions correspond to large relative changes in the mass of the atom as well as in the zero point energy, unprotonated (D2O)n+ clusters of significant abundance are not produced in supersonic expansions of deuterated water. An additional result of this work is the observation of doubly charged ions above a critical cluster size (n=37). © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: 2 , N2, and CO2. For CO2 additional experiments have been performed at reduced pressure and in a molecular beam. By delaying the probe pulse a periodic recovery of the DFWM signal is observed. The period of these transients can be assigned unambiguously to rotational Raman transitions of the ground state within the laser bandwidth. The decay of the transients yields the collisional dephasing of the Raman-induced polarization. At zero delay also optical-field-induced birefringence of electronic nature contributes to the signal. The different time scales of the Raman and electronic effects allow us to estimate their relative strength.

    Notes: Abstract During a run of the Common Programme Three of the EISCAT radar the splitting of an auroral arc was observed by high time-resolution, ground-based cameras when the UHF radar beam was close to the arc. The evening eastward electrojet situation with a large-scale northward ionospheric electric field was disturbed by the intrusion of a convection channel with southward electric field from the east. The interaction of the new convection channel with the auroral arc caused changes in arc brightness and arc splitting, i.e. the creation of a new arc parallel to the preexisting auroral arc. The event is described as one possibility for the creation of parallel arcs during slightly disturbed magnetic conditions far from the Harang discontinuity.

    Notes: Abstract High time and space resolution optical and radar measurements have revealed the influence of electric fields on E-region electron density profiles in small-scale auroral structures. Large electric fields are present adjacent to auroral filaments produced by monoenergetic electron fluxes. The ionisation profiles measured within and beside the auroral filaments show the effects of plasma convection due to electric fields as well as the consequences of the response time to large and dynamic fluxes of energetic electrons. Without high-resolution optical measurements, the interpretation of the radar data is limited.

    Notes: Abstract Tomographic reconstruction of the three-dimensional auroral are emission is used to obtain vertical and horizontal distributions of the optical auroral emission. Under the given experimental conditions with a very limited angular range and a small number of observers, algebraic reconstruction methods generally yield better results than transform techniques. Different algebraic reconstruction methods are tested with an auroral are model and the best results are obtained with an iterative least-square method adapted from emission-computed tomography. The observation geometry used during a campaign in Norway in 1995 is tested with the are model and root-mean-square errors, to be expected under the given geometrical conditions, are calculated. Although optimum geometry was not used, root-mean-square errors of less than 2% for the images and of the order of 30% for the distribution could be obtained. The method is applied to images from real observations. The correspondence of original pictures and projections of the reconstructed volume is discussed, and emission profiles along magnetic field lines through the three-dimensionally reconstructed arc are calibrated into electron density profiles with additional EISCAT measurements. Including a background profile and the temporal changes of the electron density due to recombination, good agreement can be obtained between measured profiles and the time-sequence of calculated profiles. These profiles are used to estimate the conductivity distribution in the vicinity of the EISCAT site. While the radar can only probe the ionosphere along the radar beam, the three-dimensional tomography enables conductivity estimates in a large area around the radar site.

    Notes: Abstract Carbosilane dendrimers of generation 1 and 2 are functionalized with mesogenic end groups (cyanobiphenyl) via spacers of 5 and 11 carbons. The dielectric relaxation is measured over broad frequency (1 Hz–1 GHz) and temperature (170–470 K) ranges. Two relaxation regimes are observed and characterized as δ and β relaxation. The δ relaxation is nearly a single Debye process and varies strongly with temperature. The SE to SA transition observed for the dendrimers with long spacers causes a jump in the relaxation rate of the δ process. The β process displays an Arrhenius-type temperature dependence with an activation energy of 35 kJ/mol. The relaxation time depends on spacer length. The dielectric relaxation reflects the mutual distortion of the dendrimer scaffold and the smectic layers.
