    Notes: Abstract: Pure elastic and inelastic scattering cross sections have been measured for the systems 58Ni +90,94Zr at energies near the Coulomb barrier where not only quasi-elastic and fusion but also deep-inelastic process come into play. Coupled channels calculations including both projectile and target inelastic excitations can successfully explain the elastic and inelastic scattering angular distributions with an energy-independent semi-empirical bare potential. The calculation reproduces also the sum of the total quasi-elastic, fusion and deep-inelastic cross sections.

    Notes: Abstract High spin states up toJ=14 and excitation energy up toE *=3076 keV have been observed in the odd-odd nucleus100Tc with the reaction96Zr(7Li, 3n), at bombarding energies between 21 and 31 MeV, by in-beam γ spectroscopy and conversion-electron measurements. A ΔJ=1 negative parity band similar to that observed in theN=57 isotone102Rh, and based on the 8−, 708 keV state has been identified. The observed band can be interpreted in terms of collective core excitations based on a two-quasiparticle state of(πg9/2 ⊗ νh11/2) configuration. Comparison with IBFM-2 calculations have been performed.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Mit neuartigen Methoden wurde die Geschwindigkeit untersucht, mit der das Prothrombin verbraucht und das Thrombin nach Beedigung der Gerinnung frischen menschlichen Plasmas inaktiviert wird. Die Geschwindigkeit des « Prothrombinverbrauchs » hängt von der Zahl der vorhandenen Blutplättchen ab. Sie wächst kritisch bei optimaler Blutplättchenzahl zwischen der 8. und 14. Minute nach Beendigung der Gerinnung. Die Inaktivierung des während der Gerinnung gebildeten Thrombins wird nur sehr wenig von den im Plasma verbliebenen Plättchen beeinflußt. Sie geht rasch in den ersten 15 Minuten nach Beendigung der Gerinnung vor sich. Bei krankhaften Zuständen zeigt die Thrombininaktivierungskurve Veränderungen, die vielleicht diagnostisch bei der thrombotischen Diathese nützlich sein könnten. Die Resultate des Prothrombinverbrauchtests werden durch das restliche Thrombin des Serums nicht beeinflußt, wenn die Bestimmung 30 bis 60 Minuten nach Beendigung der Gerinnung vorgenommen wird.

    Notes: Abstract Cockayne syndrome (CS) is an autosomal recessive disorder with dwarfism, mental retardation, sun sensitivity and a variety of other features. Cultured CS cells are hypersensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light, and following UV irradiation, CS cells are unable to restore RNA synthesis rates to normal levels. This has been attributed to a specific deficiency in CS cells in the ability to repair damage in actively transcribed regions of DNA at the rapid rate seen in normal cells. We have used the failure of recovery of RNA synthesis, following UV irradiation of CS cells, in a complementation test. Cells of different CS donors are fused. Restoration of normal RNA synthesis rates in UV irradiated heterodikaryons indicates that the donors are in different complementation groups, whereas a failure to effect this recovery implies that they are in the same group. In an analysis of cell strains from 22 CS donors from several countries and different racial groups, we have assigned five cell strains to the CS-A group and the remaining 17 to CS-B. No obvious racial, clinical or cellular distinctions could be made between individuals in the two groups. Our analysis will assist the identification of mutations in the recently clonedCSA andCSB genes and the study of structure-function relationships.

    Notes: Summary Transgenic potato plants of cv. Désirée carrying an antibacterial gene, coding for a cecropin lytic peptide analogue, were inoculated with a virulent strain ofPseudomonas solanacearum under controlled conditions. The disease index scored during three repeated infection trials indicated an increased variability in plant response among the transgenic lines which gave either a more susceptible or a more resistant response to the pathogen when compared with untransformed Désirée. Immunity toP. solanacearum was not observed, but it was possible to select a group of transgenic lines that showed resistance levels and disease development curves comparable to the field resistant cv. Cruza 148.

    Notes: Summary Funaria hygrometrica gametophytes were grown in in vitro controlled systems in the presence and absence of lead. Their nuclear genomes were then analyzed directly in situ with A+T and G+C specific fluorochromes, image analysis and statistical data elaboration by specific software, in order to characterize the different fractions of repetitive DNA. The results reveal qualitative and quantitative differences between the nuclear genomes of lead-stressed and unstressed individuals. These differences seem to consist of a significant increase in G+C rich repetitive DNA sequences in nuclei of the stressed individuals. These sequences form well defined agglomerates, generally situated adjacent to the nucleolar region, which increase in both size and number in the presence of lead. Some hypotheses are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Events with 2, 3 and 4 heavy fragments (A≥20) detected in the reactions100Mo +100Mo at 18.7, 23.7 A·MeV and120Sn +120Sn at 18.4 A·MeV were analyzed by means of an improved version of the kinematic coincidence method. The phase-space distributions prove that 3- (and possibly 4-) body events predominantly originate from a two-step mechanism and are compatible with the hypothesis of a binary deep-inelastic interaction followed by the further fissionlike decay of one (or both) of the primary fragments. The characteristics of the fission step — mass asymmetry, relative velocity, in-plane and out-of-plane angles — have been reconstructed for the 3-body events and indications are found that nonequilibrium effects at the end of the deep-inelastic phase may influence the fissionlike decay.

    Notes: Summary Potato plantlets derived from in vitro propagation of three cultivars known for their field resistance (Cruza 148 and BR-63.65) or susceptibility (Désirée) to Pseudomonas solanacearum E.F. Smith were artificially inoculated under controlled conditions. The aim of this work was to determine the optimal inoculum concentration and the best observation period in which the cultivars would show different reactions to bacterial infection as expected on the basis of their field performance. A suitable statistical analysis of disease indices is proposed to distinguish between resistant and susceptible responses, with a particular care for the applicative needs and a univocal interpretation of the results. In order to evaluate the significance of sources of variation related to the observed mean differences, the analysis of variance and a convenient clustering procedure of disease index means were applied. The statistical analysis revealed that, under our conditions, an inoculum concentration of 5×106 cfu/plant was suitable for separating resistant from susceptible responses, in accordance with the reactions already observed in field experiments by other authors. Also, differences among the three cultivars were best observed nine to twelve days after inoculation with the pathogen.
