Abstract We present electron microscopicobservations on fragments of encysted embryos of thecrustacean, Artemia sp., recovered from a 27,000year-old core section taken under the Great Salt Lake(GSL), Utah. The significance of these results comesfrom a consideration of the geological history of theGSL and the extraordinary properties and abundance ofArtemia cysts at this site. We make the casethat this unique system, and probably other salt lakesas well, provides novel opportunities for the studyof “ancient DNA” and related matters. The analysisprovides the major focus of this paper, which we hopewill stimulate interest in this aspect of salt lakeresearch.
