Notizen: A simple and efficient three-noded mixed harmonic axisymmetric element for shells of revolution under non-symmetric loading is developed. The present element considering shear strain is based on a modified mixed variational principle in which the independent unknowns are only the quantities prescribable at the shell edges. The non-symmetric variations of the displacements and stress resultants in the circumferential direction are decomposed in terms of Fourier series. The stress resultants are eliminated on the element level so that the standard stiffness equations are obtained. The importance of consistent stress parameters is addressed and the efficiency of the present consistent mixed element is shown. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: The purpose of this work is to show the successful use of nodeless degrees of freedom in developing a highly accurate, locking free hybrid-mixed C0 curved beam element. In the performance evaluation process of the present field-consistent higher-order element, the effect of field consistency and the role of higher-order interpolation on both displacement-type and hybrid-mixed-type elements are carefully examined. Several benchmark tests confirm the superior behaviour of the present element. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: In this paper, an efficient numerical method for unsteady free surface motions, with simple geometries, has been devised. Under the potential flow assumption, the governing equation of free surface flows becomes a Laplace equation, which is treated here by means of a series expansions of the velocity potential. The free surface is represented with a height function. The present method is applied to surface gravity waves to test the stability and accuracy of the method. To show the versatility of the method, a model for a dip formation is considered. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Gas-kinetic schemes based on the BGK model are proposed as an alternative evolution model which can cure some of the limitations of current Riemann solvers. To analyse the schemes, simple advection equations are reconstructed and solved using the gas-kinetic BGK model. Results for gas-dynamic application are also presented. The final flux function derived in this model is a combination of a gas-kinetic Lax- Wendroff flux of viscous advection equations and kinetic flux vector splitting. These two basic schemes are coupled through a non-linear gas evolution process and it is found that this process always satisfies the entropy condition. Within the framework of the LED (local extremum diminishing) principle that local maxima should not increase and local minima should not decrease in interpolating physical quantities, several standard limiters are adopted to obtain initial interpolations so as to get higher-order BGK schemes. Comparisons for well-known test cases indicate that the gas-kinetic BGK scheme is a promising approach in the design of numerical schemes for hyperbolic conservation laws. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A globally convergent and efficient algorithm for min-max dynamic response optimization using the ALM method is presented. This algorithm employs an approximate augmented Lagrangian for line searches, and an exact augmented Lagrangian for finding search directions. This approximate augmented Lagrangian is composed of the linearized cost and constraint functions projected on the search direction. It is noted that an approximate penalty term has the same approximate Hessian as that of the Gauss-Newton method. This makes the approximate augmented Lagrangian to have almost second-order accuracy near the optimum. In the unconstrained optimization process of the proposed method, some modifications are also suggested to remove the possible distortion of optimization trajectory when the side constraints on design variables are separately handled. Also, the efficiencies of two treatments for handling a max-value cost function are discussed in the context of the proposed method. The numerical performance of the proposed method is investigated by solving three min-max dynamic response optimization problems and comparing the results with those in the literature. This comparison shows that the suggested algorithm is more efficient than those in the literature. Especially, it is found that the direct treatment for a max-value cost function is more efficient than the transformation treatment for all the design cases. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: This paper presents concepts of two-dimensional reduced minimization of product type and non-product type: the analytical reduced minimization theory in one dimension when extended to that of Mindlin plate elements reveals that the two-dimensional reduced minimization for Lagrangian plate elements can be obtained by the successive use of the one-dimensional reduced minimization. But this relation does not hold for serendipity elements due to an incompleteness of displacement functions. This paper examines effects of various integrations of shear strain energy by applying the one-dimensional successive reduced minimization to Lagrangian and serendipity plate elements. The results show why the selective 2×3 and 3×2 rule for the transverse shear strain energies of an 8-noded plate element cannot eliminate locking and why a conventional 12-noded plate element of serendipity family does not have one-order-lower, optimal Gauss strain locations. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Finite element modelling is used to study the response of plate structures on which piezoelectric active devices are mounted. Such devices are typically small in relation to the size of the structure which can be modelled as a plate or shell structure. In modelling the response of such devices, it is necessary to use a detailed model of the device but to do the same for the whole structure is computationally expensive and unnecessary. Full three-dimensional elements are used to model the piezoelectric devices because such devices are anisotropic, couple electric and elastic fields and satisfy boundary conditions independently on the two fields. Shell elements, approximated by many flat-shell elements are used in modelling the structure. Transition elements have been derived to connect the three-dimensional solid elements in the piezoelectric region to the flat-shell elements used for the plate. This approach has merits in terms of accuracy in modelling the piezoelectric device and computational economy for the plate structure. The use of shell elements is preferred for the structure since brick elements lead to unnatural stiffening of the plate and artificially high natural frequencies. The aspect ratio of the transition elements are first optimized through a numerical study and the sensor and actuator performance of the devices is then verified. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A mixed Galerkin technique with B-spline basis functions is presented to compute two-dimensional incompressible flow in terms of the primitive variable formulation. To circumvent the Babuska-Brezzi stability criterion, the artificial compressibility formulation of the equation of mass conservation is employed. As a result, the diagonal components of the matrix form in the governing equations are not singular. The B-spline basis is used because it is superior to other splines in providing computer solutions to fluid flow problems. One of the advantages of the B-spline basis is that it has excellent approximation properties. Numerical examples of applications of the mixed formulation are presented to demonstrate the convergence characteristics and accuracy of the present formulation. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: To improve the numerical analysis of free surface convection and interface reconstruction, both first- and second-order algorithms are developed based on the volume-of-fluid method. The methodology applied to the second-order model is to define the second-order linear curve having both face slopes as near horizontal as possible while satisfying the cell's defined volume fraction. The second-order method is compared with the FLAIR method and the first-order method through simulation of the convection for various sizes of circular liquid shapes and solitary waves. For small curvature of the free surface, e.g. circles with large diameter, linear methods such as the FLAIR method and the first-order method show relatively good predictions. However, for large-curvature configurations, e.g. circles with relatively small diameter or solitary waves, the linear approach shows large distortion of the free surface. In contrast, the second-order model always shows powerful prediction capabilities of free surface convection. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
