    Notes: A simple and efficient three-noded mixed harmonic axisymmetric element for shells of revolution under non-symmetric loading is developed. The present element considering shear strain is based on a modified mixed variational principle in which the independent unknowns are only the quantities prescribable at the shell edges. The non-symmetric variations of the displacements and stress resultants in the circumferential direction are decomposed in terms of Fourier series. The stress resultants are eliminated on the element level so that the standard stiffness equations are obtained. The importance of consistent stress parameters is addressed and the efficiency of the present consistent mixed element is shown. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: An efficient, perhaps simplest, three-noded mixed finite element is proposed for axisymmetric shell analysis. The key feature in the present formulation is to start with a better variational principle in which the independent unknowns are only the quantities that can be prescribed at the shell edges. If the consistency for field approximations is satisfied, no other numerical consideration is necessary in the present element. Several examples confirm the satisfactory numerical behaviour of the present mixed element.

    Notes: A clearly consistent finite element formulation for spatial stability analysis of thin-walled space frames is presented by applying linearized virtual work principle and introducing Vlasov's assumption. The improved displacement field for unsymmetric thin-walled cross-sections is introduced based on inclusion of second-order terms of finite rotations, and the potential energy corresponding to the semitangential moments is consistently derived. In the present formulation, displacement parameters of axial and bending deformations are defined at the centroid axis and parameters of lateral and torsional deformations at the shear centre axis, and all bending-torsional coupling effects due to unsymmetric cross-sections are taken into account. For finite element analysis, cubic Hermitian polynomials for the flexural beam with four types of end conditions are utilized as shape functions of Hermitian space frame element. Also, load correction stiffness matrices for off-axis point loadings are derived based on the second-order rotation terms. Finite element solutions for the spatial buckling analysis of thin-walled space frames are compared with available solutions and other researcher's results.

    Notes: The purpose of this work is to show the successful use of nodeless degrees of freedom in developing a highly accurate, locking free hybrid-mixed C0 curved beam element. In the performance evaluation process of the present field-consistent higher-order element, the effect of field consistency and the role of higher-order interpolation on both displacement-type and hybrid-mixed-type elements are carefully examined. Several benchmark tests confirm the superior behaviour of the present element. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: In this paper, an efficient numerical method for unsteady free surface motions, with simple geometries, has been devised. Under the potential flow assumption, the governing equation of free surface flows becomes a Laplace equation, which is treated here by means of a series expansions of the velocity potential. The free surface is represented with a height function. The present method is applied to surface gravity waves to test the stability and accuracy of the method. To show the versatility of the method, a model for a dip formation is considered. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: The problem of finding the shape of a body with smallest drag in a flow governed by the two-dimensional steady Navier-Stokes equations is considered. The flow is expressed in terms of a streamfunction which satisfies a fourth-order partial differential equation with the biharmonic operator as principal part. Using the adjoint variable approach, both the first- and second-order necessary conditions for the shape with smallest drag are obtained. An algorithm for the calculation of the optimal shape is proposed in which the first variations of solutions of the direct and adjoint problems are incorporated. Numerical examples show that the algorithm can produce the optimal shape successfully.

    Notes: This paper describes a parallel algorithm based on discontinuous hp-finite element approximations of linear, scalar, hyperbolic conservation laws. The paper focuses on the development of an effective parallel adaptive strategy for such problems. Numerical experiments suggest that these techniques are highly parallelizable and exponentially convergent, thereby yielding efficiency many times superior to conventional schemes for hyperbolic problems.

    Notes: In this paper, the effects of various numerical integrations on the behaviour of C0-continuous beam elements under non-uniform isoparametric mapping are investigated by using numerical reduced minimization theory. The theory shows that stress recovery can be achieved by sampling stresses at the optimal integration points once a reduced integration is employed. It rationalizes the continued acceptance of the conventional reduced integration of constrained strain energy as one of remedies for locking due to spurious constraint.

    Notes: The whole turbulent flow field around a two-dimensional aerofoil is solved with a consistent numerical method on a single-grid system and with an intermittency implemented two-equation model, namely the k-∊-γ turbulence model in elliptic form. In order to solve the numerical instability problem arising from the branch-cut in C-type grids using the non-staggered finite-volume method, a new numerical technique is proposed to guarantee the correct velocity-pressure coupling along the branch-cut. The computational results are compared with those by the standard k-∊ model and experimental data. This study demonstrates the relative simplicity of the present C-type single grid system, and the capability is assessed of the k-∊-γ equations for predicting turbulent flows consisting of both wall-free and wall-bounded regions.
