Notes: The series of organotin halide complexes with tetraethyl ethylene- and propylene-diphosphonates RnSnX4-n,·L [n=0, X=Cl; n=1, R=Me, X=Cl, Br; n=1, R=Ph, X=Cl; n=2, R=Me, Et, Bu, X=Cl, Br; n=2, R=Ph, X=Cl; L=(EtO)2P(O)CH2CHR'P(O)(OEt)2, R'=H, Me] were synthesized and characterized by means of NMR and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The crystal structure of the complex of diphenyltin dichloride with propylenediphosphonate was determined. The complex consists of polymer chains with bridging bidentate ligands and an octahedral tin environment containing two types of phosphoryl fragments. All of the R2SnX2 adducts have trans-R2SnX4 geometries of tin coordination octahedra according to the quadrupole splitting values in the Mössbauer spectra. The 31P and 119Sn NMR studies at low temperatures revealed that RSnHal3 complexes in solution form isomers with different mutual orientations of phosphoryl ligands and organic groups in the coordination sphere. The diethyltin dichloride adduct with ethylene-diphosphonate appeared to be active against lung cancer NCI-H522 cells.

Notes: A series of 12 chiral arylcarboxylic acids were chromatographed on an immobilized human serum albumin chiral stationary phase (HSA-CSP). The effects of solute structure on chromatographic retentions and enantioselective separations were examined by linear regression analysis and the construction of quantitative structure-enantioselective retention relationships. Competitive displacement studies were also conducted using R-ibuprofen as the displacing agent. The results indicate that the enantioselective retention of the solutes takes place at the indole-benzodiazepine site (site II) on the HSA molecule and that chiral recognition is affected by the hydrophobicity and steric volume of the solutes. The displacement studies also identified a cooperative allosteric interaction induced by the binding of R-ibuprofen to site II. Chirality 9:178-183, 1997. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Rates of acid-catalysed hydrolysis of phenyldiazoacetic acid were measured in aqueous solution at 25°C across the entire acidity range pCH+ = 1-13. The reaction was found to occur through both the non-ionized and inonized forms of the substrate, with the ionized form reacting faster by a factor of 650. Appreciable solvent isotope effects in the normal direction (kH/kD 〉 1) and the occurrence of general acid analysis show that hydrolysis occurs by rate-determining proton transfer to the diazocarbon atom of the substrate. Analysis of the rate profile for the reaction provides an estimate of the acidity constant of phenyldiazoacetic acid, pKa = 3·70, which is apparently the first determination of the acid strength of an α-diazocarboxylic acid. Comparison of this result with the pKa of phenylacetic acid shows the diazo group to have a mild (4×) acid-strengthening effect, whose modest magnitude is attributed to opposing resonance and polar effects.

Description: The flow through the tip clearance region of a transonic compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) was computed and compared to aerodynamic probe and laser anemometer data. Tip clearance effects were modeled both by gridding the clearance gap and by using a simple periodicity model across the ungridded gap. The simple model was run with both the full gap height, and with half the gap height to simulate a vena-contracta effect. Comparisons between computed and measured performance maps and downstream profiles were used to validate the models and to assess the effects of gap height on the simple clearance model. Recommendations were made concern- ing the use of the simple clearance model Detailed comparisons were made between the gridded clearance gap solution and the laser anemometer data near the tip at two operating points. The computed results agreed fairly well with the data but overpredicted the extent of the casing separation and underpredicted the wake decay rate. The computations were then used to describe the interaction of the tip vortex, the passage shock, and the casing boundary layer.

Description: An experimental study was conducted (1) to experimentally measure, assess and analyze the heat transfer within the internal cooling configuration of a radial turbine rotor blade and (2) to obtain heat transfer data to evaluate and improve computational fluid dynamics (CFD) procedures and turbulent transport models of internal coolant flows. A 1.15 times scale model of the coolant passages within the NASA LERC High Temperature Radial Turbine was designed, fabricated of Lucite and instrumented for transient beat transfer tests using thin film surface thermocouples and liquid crystals to indicate temperatures. Transient heat transfer tests were conducted for Reynolds numbers of one-fourth, one-half, and equal to the operating Reynolds number for the NASA Turbine. Tests were conducted for stationary and rotating conditions with rotation numbers in the range occurring in the NASA Turbine. Results from the experiments showed the heat transfer characteristics within the coolant passage were affected by rotation. In general, the heat transfer increased and decreased on the sides of the straight radial passages with rotation as previously reported from NASA-HOST-sponsored experiments. The heat transfer in the tri-passage axial flow region adjacent to the blade exit was relatively unaffected by rotation. However, the heat transfer on one surface, in the transitional region between the radial inflow passage and axial, constant radius passages, decreased to approximately 20 percent of the values without rotation. Comparisons with previous 3-D numerical studies indicated regions where the heat transfer characteristics agreed and disagreed with the present experiment.
