    Notes: This paper augments the theoretical foundations of organized commodity futures markets and uncovers singular facts about arbitrage and the role of information. Using the term “credit agency” to embrace organized futures markets such as the Chicago Board of Trade as well as independent brokerage houses, we extend the extant theory of temporary equilibrium for an economy with a single credit agency to economies with many credit agencies. In the process, we find that arbitrage with no risk of bankruptcy and with perfect interagency trade information can be incompatible with equilibrium (exact or approximate). On the other hand, the usual regularity assumptions are sufficient for the existence of at least an approximate equilibrium, provided that interagency trade information is imperfect (or risky). However, such imperfect information limits arbitrage so different agencies can have different prices.

    Notes: Seeds of population varieties, hybrid varieties, cytogenetic male sterility (CMS) single cross lines and CMS inbred lines of rye (Secale cereale L.) were stored to determine the respective rates of germination loss with a view to their storage potential. The seeds were stored under controlled conditions at a seed moisture content of 14% and a temperature of 30°C for periods of up to 80 days. The storage potential decreased in the order: hybrid varieties 〉 population varieties 〉 CMS single cross lines 〉 CMS inbred lines. However, the rates of germination loss showed no differences within the respective categories. The inferences drawn for seed storage potential hold for seed vigour potential.

    Notes: Software for water-resources planning has been in use in the Anglian region of the UK since the mid-1970s. However, new technical solutions (such as network flow programming) have recently emerged and may offer more appropriate tools to respond to the growing challenges faced by the water industry. These have been explored and implemented by Essex and Suffolk Water and the Environment Agency through the ‘drought reliable output program’(DROP) project. The needs and benefits of a more user-friendly platform are reviewed, and issues relating to the lack of a general quantifiable measure of reliability (both in yield assessment for planning purposes and the optimization of operation of water-resource systems) are discussed.

    Notes: Survival and growth of 0.3–0.9 g red drum Sciaenops ocellatus were measured for fish reared in water-recirculating culture systems containing one of the following media: 6g/L diluted seawater; 1g/L diluted seawater; 1g/L diluted seawater with either 1 or 5g/L of additional salt. Salt was added as sodium chloride, calcium chloride, or magnesium sulfate. Mean survival over the 42-d study period was 56.3%. The 5g/L sodium chloride treatment had the highest survival rate (80.0%) and the calcium chloride treatment had the lowest (26.7%). The biomass-change rate for fish in the 5g/L calcium chloride treatment was significantly lower (P 〈 0.05) than for fish in the 5g/L sodium chloride, 1g/L sodium chloride, or 5g/L magnesium sulfate treatments. The latter three treatments gave biomass-change rates that did not differ (P 〉 0.05) from those obtained in the 1 or 6g/L diluted seawater.

    Notes: The presence of a signal sequence preceding the gene encoding a target antigen in a DNA vaccine should facilitate secretion of the in vivo translated antigen. The immune responses elicited upon injection with such a vector could differ from those induced by the same vector lacking a signal sequence. In the present study, the humoral responses elicited in mice immunized with two plasmids, either containing or lacking the human tissue plasminogen activator signal sequence, were compared. Both plasmids encode the chimeric antigen ZZN4, containing a malaria antigen Pf332-derived sequence (N4) linked to a bacterial fusion partner (ZZ). In vitro transfection of COS cells with each plasmid and treatment of the transfectants with brefeldin A confirmed that secretion of ZZN4 via the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi pathway only occurred in cells transfected with the signal peptide-encoding plasmid. Repeated intramuscular injections of mice with either of the plasmids elicited comparable antibody responses to ZZN4 with regard to kinetics, specific IgG levels and persistence. These results indicate that in vivo transfection of muscle cells by either of these two plasmids generated comparable levels of antigen available for B-cell recognition and for uptake by antigen-presenting cells, despite the differential intracellular targeting of the encoded antigen. The relevance of these findings for the design of DNA vaccine vectors is discussed.

    Notes: The possibility of improving the antibody responses to a model streptococcal antigen, administered by intranasal immunization as surface-displayed on the food-grade bacterium Staphylococcus carnosus, by co-exposure of a peptide (CTBp) comprising amino acids 50–75 of the cholera toxin B subunit, was investigated. It was found that the introduction of the CTBp into the chimeric surface proteins, containing a serum albumin binding protein (ABP) from streptococcal protein G as model antigen, significantly increased serum IgG responses upon intranasal immunization. Similarly, elicited local IgA responses were also found to be improved. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that live delivery of the staphylococci was required to obtain this effect, since UV-irradiated or heat-killed bacteria exposing the same chimeric surface proteins did not show increased anti-ABP IgG responses.

    Notes: The human transferrin receptor, a type II plasma membrane protein which mediates iron transport in human cells, was expressed in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The transferrin receptor synthesized by yeast cells was posttranslationally modified comparable to the native receptor with respect to glycosylation and dimer formation. The location of the expressed receptor in the yeast plasma membrane indicates that the targeting of this type II membrane protein shares similar mechanisms in yeast and mammalian cells. The yeast-expressed transferrin receptor showed binding activity towards its natural ligand, transferrin in an ELISA binding assay.

    Notes: Glycerol is the main compatible solute in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It is accumulated intracellularly when cells are exposed to decreased extracellular water activity. In general, increased intracellular accumulation of a solute may be caused by enhanced production, restricted dissimilation, increased retention by the plasma membrane and increased uptake from the medium. In this review, we evaluate current knowledge concerning mechanisms leading to the accumulation of glycerol in osmotically stressed cells of S. cerevisiae at the molecular and metabolic levels. An overview of glycerol metabolism in S. cerevisiae is provided.
