    Notes: Abstract Electrothermal atomic absorption procedures for the rapid determination of cobalt, nickel and copper in soil and sediment samples are presented. The samples are suspended in a hydrofluoric acid solution before being injected into the electrothermal atomizer. Prior mild heating in a microwave oven is recommended for nickel and copper determination. No modifier other than hydrofluoric acid is required. The conventional ashing step is unnecessary since the fast-heating programmes lead to well defined atomization profiles with low background levels that can be corrected using a common deuterium device. Calibration is performed directly using aqueous standards. The results obtained for six certified reference materials confirm the reliability of the procedures.

    Notes: Abstract Fluxes of CO2 and o-P across the sediment-water interfacewere measured adding different amounts of sulfatein order to quantify the influence in these processes againsta control, and using chloramphenicol as an inhibitor ofbacterial activity. These experiments were performed underoxic and anoxic conditions. Results show that the additionof sulfate stimulated the fluxes of CO2 and o-P, whilethe use of chloramphenicol decreased these fluxes. Theratio of o-P release to Org-C release ranged from 1 to 5 underoxic conditions and from 18 to 42 under anoxicconditions.

    Notes: Abstract Soil, aquatic biota (moss: Brachythecium rivulare; aquatic macrophytes: Juncus effusus, Potamogeton crispus; fish: Salmo trutta fario, Anguilla anguilla, Phoxinus phoxinus, Chelon labrosus) and sediment samples from the Urumea river valley were analysed for metals by acid digestion and atomic absorption spectroscopy. The sediments show the presence of metal pollution (Cd: 2.5–24 mg kg-1; Pb: 125–1,150 mg kg-1; Zn: 125–2,500 mg kg-1) because mining and industrial wastes. A selective retention of dense minerals in dam sediments contributes to the load of metal, but interstitial water analysis (Cd: 〈0.02–0.1 mg L-1; Pb: 0.3–1.0 mg L-1; Zn: 〈0.05–0.6 mg L-1) shows that precipitation equilibrium controls their mobilisation. Biota samples show evidence of metal accumulation, moss reaching 1,100 mg kg-1 in lead and 6,800 mg kg-1 in zinc. Soil from the valley is polluted by both, river carried material and industrial sources (Cd: 1.0–4.0 mg kg-1; Pb: 26–1,120 mg kg-1; Zn: 105–1,390 mg kg-1/math〉), but they are used, indistinctly, for farming and pasture.

    Notes: Abstract The characterization of sediment behavior is very important in coastal dynamics, deep sea topography, global models of circulation, etc. This paper presents some experimental techniques used to study sediments extracted from the sea. A stirring grid is used to obtain a well-known turbulent velocity field which interacts with the sediment bed. The velocity field is modeled from measurements with Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry, and compared with classical results.
