Notes: Abstract Na+,K+-ATPase activity is abundant on the basolateral infoldings of the strial marginal cells and contributes to the maintenance of the characteristic electrolyte composition of the endolymph. However, the stria vascularis of the cochlea is known not to be innervated. In order to clarify its humoral regulation by serotonin, the K+-p-nitrophenylphosphatase activity of strial marginal cells was investigated with a cerium-based method in normal guinea pigs and in guinea pigs treated with reserpine, 5-hydroxytryptamine or reserpine plus 5-hydroxytryptamine. K+-p-nitrophenylphosphatase activity was almost completely depressed 3--20 days after reserpine administration. Ten days after reserpinization, followed by repeated 5-hydroxytryptamine treatment, the enzyme activity was detectable. These results suggest that 5-hydroxytryptamine increases the phosphatase activity. Thus, the function of the stria vascularis in producing cochlear endolymph may be regulated by 5-hydroxytrypt amine. © 1998 Chapman & Hall

Notes: Abstract The concepts of organizational learning in organization and management science cover a very wide range of organization-related activities in organization. Since socially situated intelligence is one of such activities, this paper makes the concept of organizational learning operational from the computational viewpoint for investigating socially situated intelligence. In particular, this paper focuses on the characteristics of multiagent learning as one kind of socially situated intelligence, and analyzes them using four operationalized learning mechanisms in organizational learning. A careful investigation on the characteristics of multiagent learning has revealed the following implications: (1) there are two levels in the learning mechanisms for multiagent learning (the individual level and organizational level) and each mechanism is divided into two types (single- and double-loop learning). The integration of these four learning mechanisms improves socially situated intelligence; and (2) the following properties support socially situated intelligence: (a) different dimensions in learning mechanisms, (b) interaction among various levels and types of learning mechanisms in addition to interaction among agents, and (c) combination of exploration at an individual level and exploitation at an organizational level.

Notes: Abstract Diffraction efficiencies of a reflection-type blazed holographic optical element (HOE) are analyzed and optimized for use in a totally integrated optical head. The HOE, consisting of four-step phase levels, was fabricated by a double-etching process. By controlling each etching depth, signal light power efficiency was maximized to 16% and the power ratio of noise components relative to signal light power was suppressed to 21%. Diffraction efficiencies were made uniform over the entire HOE in oblique positioning by controlling the respective step widths of the HOE.

Notes: Abstract We demonstrated characteristics of an optical super-resolution pickup using a liquid crystal (LC) shutter as a shading plate. The problem of laser power loss was solved by an LC shutter which was turned off for writing and turned on for reading. Combining this with CAD-MSR disk, we obtained good signals of high-density recording. This combination increases efficiency of laser power and does not require a slit to eliminate side-lobes. The laser power efficiency for writing is as high as 34% and linear bit density reaches 0.255 μm/bit even with a wavelength of 680 nm and an objective lens NA of 0.60.

Notes: Abstract Lectins from four marine algal species were examined for interaction with human platelets. The lectin designated hypnin A, from the red algaHypnea japonica, inhibited adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-or collagen-induced human platelet aggregation in a dose-dependent manner. Complete inhibition was observed at concentrations of 100 and 5 μg/ml of the lectin with, ADP (2 μM) and collagen (0.2 μg/ml)-induced platelet aggregation, respectively. At the inhibitory concentration of 0.5 to 100 μg/ml, the lectin did not induce aggregation of resting platelets. Lectins from the other three algal species also inhibited ADP-induced human platelet aggregation. These results indicate that the algal lectins are a new group of inhibitors and may be useful to study glycoconjugates on platelet membranes and to design novel platelet aggregation inhibitors.

Notes: Abstract Some properties of salivary amylases of the adults of Adelphocoris suturalis Jakovlev and Dolycoris baccarum L. were studied in vitro and compared with those of several other heteropteran species. The reducing sugar produced by the action of the salivary amylase of D. baccarum increased in proportion to substrate concentration while the concentration was relatively low (below 0.67% in its final concentration). Its increase stopped at the concentrations from 0.67 to 2.0%, and then it increased again constantly but slowly. The optimum temperature for the action of the enzyme was found to be about 50° (in A. suturalis) and about 40° (in D. baccarum), and the optimal pH was 3.5–4.0 in A. suturalis and 6.0 in D. baccarum. The salivary amylase activity of D. baccarum was scarcely affected by NaCl, KNO3, and other compounds, while the salivary amylase of A. suturalis was strongly activated by NaCl and moderately by KNO3. It seems highly probable that taxonomically related heteropterous insects might well be grouped with respect to the degree of activation of the salivary amylase by Cl- or NO3-.

Notes: Abstract Density functional calculations at the B3LYP/6-311G**//B3LYP/6-311G level of theory were used to study the initial process of ethylene degradation on the TiO2 photocatalyst by adopting the dimeric titanium structure Ti2O6H4 as a model of the catalyst surface. Adsorption energies of water and ethylene were calculated to be 31.9 and 20.4 kcal mol−1. The photogenerated OH radical does not desorb from the catalyst surface and the further reaction with ethylene proceeds since the adsorption energy was estimated to be 39.3 kcal mol−1. Our calculation also indicated that under steady illumination, ethylene directly attacks the OH radical bound to the TiO2 surface even though the surface has vacant sites available for ethylene adsorption.

Notes: Abstract. An incomplete correlation is discovered between the phase conjugate reflectivity in Feinberg’s Cat conjugator generating a train of regular pulses with the cw incident pump wave and inhibited specular reflectivity from the sample. The frequency chirp within every spike of conjugate wave is shown to affect the efficiency of the secondary phase conjugator generating auxiliary waves in the direction of Fresnel reflection of the incident wave.
