    Notes: We evaluated the ecological and reproductive characteristics of plant species occurring in severely disturbed areas that were revegetated with exotic grasses. We identified those species with the best combination of attributes that increase their probability of success in degraded lands. Fifteen degraded areas were studied in two different bioclimatic regions, a high premontane humid bioclimate and a low premontane humid bioclimate. The frequency of native colonizing species and the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization in their roots were evaluated. The sexual and breeding system, pollination mode, fruit set, and dispersal syndrome of ten of the most frequent colonizing species were also studied. The floristic survey of the colonizing species revealed a similarity to the reported flora of the treeless savannas that are dominant in the region. Bioclimatic conditions prevailing in the degraded lands seem to be an important factor for the presence of colonizing species and for species richness. All colonizing species studied were mycorrhizal, and for this reason the restoration program in these degraded areas should take mycorrhizae into account, reintroducing them or manipulating the soils to increase the mycorrhizal inoculum. We suggest Scleria cyperina and Trachypogon plumosus to start or promote the natural succession in the degraded areas from La Gran Sabana. Because their frequency is high and their reproductive system is less dependent on biotic factors, these species stand out in the studied areas.

    Notes: Regional information designs are tools for decision makers at subnational levels; their principal purpose is to improve the dialogue between the decision maker and the analyst as a means of improving the quality of policy decisions. This paper first examines key characteristics of regional accounts and regional information systems of relevance primarily at the state or province level. Then the nature and scope of regional decisions are reviewed with a view of delineating the problems encountered in developing systematic regional information to help make those decisions. Both policy and program decisions are considered in terms of scanning the horizon for potential opportunities and problems and of identifying preferred solutions to the problems. Finally, one regional information design is sketched out which classifies in an orderly fashion the environmental and program information useful in regional decision making.

    Notes: The objective of this study is to assess the effects of variable density ground water flow on capture zones for pumping wells on islands and the ability of numerical and analytical methods to account for these effects. Mathematical modeling is used to simulate variable density ground water flow for an island aquifer system. Coupled fresh water-salt water transport equations derived using sharp interface theory are solved using the finite-element method. Reverse particle tracking is used to compute the capture zone for a well. Sensitivity studies are completed using a quasi-three-dimensional model to identify the influence of variable density flow on the computed zone of contribution to a pumping well. Quantitative results indicate that the size and shape of the capture zone are sensitive to the natural geometry of the fresh water lens and the effects of fresh water-salt water upconing. This is especially true for pumping wells located close to the coastline. For the conditions considered in this study, accounting for variable density ground water flow resulted in capture zones approximately 21% larger than those predicted assuming a uniform fresh water aquifer thickness and constant hydraulic gradient. This effect of variable density flow on the predicted capture zones diminished away from the coastline. The study results serve to caution model users of the limitations inherent in using analytical methods to compute capture zone delineations for island aquifers.

    Notes: SUMMARY– The collagen and elastin content was determined in different cuts of veal and beef. Increases in the amount of total connective tissue are primarily due to increased amounts of collagen, whereas the elastin content is relatively constant. More collagen was found in veal than in beef. The amount of collagen solubilized by heating in one-fourth strength Ringer's solution was twice as high for veal as for beef. Results indicate that the amount of connective tissue proteins in meat is dependent upon the anatomical location and the physiological function of the muscles. Results of chemical and histological analysis are discussed from the standpoint of their nutritional significance.

    Notes: SUMMARY— Comparisons involving fresh versus frozen chops and roasts from 190 lamb carcasses indicated significant though nonconformable treatment effects on cooked-sample palatability characteristics. Freezing resulted in a highly significant increase in shear force values for loin chops and highly significant decreases in flavor, tenderness and overall satisfaction scores for leg roasts. Freezing rib chops, in contrast to the results for loin chops and leg roasts, resulted in a highly significant decrease in shear force values indicating an increase in tenderness as the result of freezing. Several possible explanations concerning these contradictory findings are suggested and discussed. In other paired-chop comparisons, higher final cooking temperatures resulted in increased shear force values for rib chops; wrapping samples prior to freezing appeared to have little effect on chop tenderness comparisons. In all comparisons, variance ratios between chops treated differently were not significantly altered.

    Notes: : This paper considers the distribution of flood flows in the Upper Mississippi, Lower Missouri, and Illinois Rivers and their relationship to climatic indices. Global climate patterns including El Niño/Southern Oscillation, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, and the North Atlantic Oscillation explained very little of the variations in flow peaks. However, large and statistically significant upward trends were found in many gauge records along the Upper Mississippi and Missouri Rivers: at Hermann on the Missouri River above the confluence with the Mississippi (p = 2 percent), at Hannibal on the Mississippi River (p 〈 0.1 percent), at Meredosia on the Illinois River (p = 0.7 percent), and at St. Louis on the Mississippi below the confluence of all three rivers (p = 1 percent). This challenges the traditional assumption that flood series are independent and identically distributed random variables and suggests that flood risk changes over time.
