Notes: Abstract When plants are exposed to light intensities in excess of those that can be utilized in photosynthetic electron transport, nonphotochemical dissipation of excitation energy is induced as a mechanism for photoprotection of photosystem II. The features of this process are reviewed, particularly with respect to the molecular mechanisms involved. It is shown how the dynamic properties of the proteins and pigments of the chlorophyll a/b light-harvesting complexes of photosystem II first enable the level of excitation energy to be sensed via the thylakoid proton gradient and subsequently allow excess energy to be dissipated as heat by formation of a nonphotochemical quencher. The nature of this quencher is discussed, together with a consideration of how the variation in capacity for energy dissipation depends on specific features of the composition of the light-harvesting system. Finally, the prospects for future progress in understanding the regulation of light harvesting are assessed.

Notes: Abstract The interaction of vortex filaments in an ideal incompressible fluid with the free surface of the latter is investigated in the canonical formalism. A Hamiltonian formulation of the equations of motion is given in terms of both canonical and noncanonical Poisson brackets. The relationship between these two approaches is analyzed. The Lagrangian of the system and the Poisson brackets are obtained in terms of vortex lines, making it possible to study the dynamics of thin vortex filaments with allowance for finite thickness of the filaments. For two-dimensional flows exact equations of motion describing the interaction of point vortices and surface waves are derived by transformation to conformal variables. Asymptotic steady-state solutions are found for a vortex moving at a velocity lower than the minimum phase velocity of surface waves. It is found that discrete coupled states of surface waves above a vortex are possible by virtue of the inhomogeneous Doppler effect. At velocities higher than the minimum phase velocity the buoyant rise of a vortex as a result of Cherenkov radiation is described in the semiclassical limit. The instability of a vortex filament against three-dimensional kink perturbations due to interaction with the “image” vortex is demonstrated.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the degeneracy of the noncanonical Poisson bracket operating on the space of solenoidal vector fields that arises due to the freezing-in of the curl of the velocity [E. A. Kuznetsov and A. V. Mikhailov, Phys. Lett. A 77, 37 (1980)] is lifted when the vorticity Ω is represented in terms of vortex lines. This representation makes it possible to integrate the equation of motion of the vorticity for a system with the Hamiltonian H=∫∣Ω∣d r.

Notes: Abstract A gauge-free description of magnetohydrodynamic flows of an ideal incompressible fluid, which takes into account the freezing-in of the magnetic field and the presence of cross invariants containing the vorticity, is obtained. This description is an extension of the canonical formalism well-known in ordinary hydrodynamics to the dynamics of frozen-in flux lines. Magnetohydrodynamics is studied as the long-wavelength limit of the two-fluid model of a plasma, in which the existence of two frozen-in fields — curls of the generalized momenta of the electron and ion fluids — follows from the symmetry of each component with respect to relabeling of the Lagrangian labels. The cross invariants in magnetohydrodynamics are limits of special combinations of topological invariants of the two-fluid model. A variational principle is formulated for the dynamics of frozen-in magnetic flux lines, and the Casimir functionals of the noncanonical Poisson brackets are found.

Notes: Abstract The electronic structure and thermodynamic properties of disordered Al-Zn alloys are investigated in the coherent potential approximation by the KKR-ASA method. Analysis of the electronic density of states and the Fermi surfaces of disordered alloys reveals the presence of eight electronic topological transitions in the concentration interval from 0 to 70 at. % Zn. It is shown that the passage of the Fermi level through two minima of the density of states, which are due to the superposition of different types of electronic topological transitions, gives rise to singularities in the concentration dependence of the second derivative of the thermodynamic potential at points corresponding to the boundaries of the region of isostructural decomposition of the high-temperature solid solution, according to the phase diagram of the Al-Zn system.

Notes: Abstract In connection with the problem of the initial singularity in the framework of the Brans-Dicke scalar-tensor isotropic cosmology, the dynamics of the early stages of the expansion is studied on the basis of the general analytical solutions for flat models withP=nε (0≤n≤1). The sourceless scalar field, which plays a role of effective source of the geometry, entirely changes the character of the initial expansion, whereas in the absense of it the dynamics of the models almost does not differ from GR-case. If the connecting parameter ω〈−6 then the sourceless scalar field removes the initial singularity for any equations of state, and provides the regular transition form the compression to the expansion through the non-stationary state with $$\dot \varphi \ne 0$$ . If ω is positive, the singularity of vacuum nature necessarily exists; the sourceless scalar-field being prevalent over the material sources (at least for P≤1/3ε) near the singularity. For P〉1/3ε parallel with the vacuum singularity the singular initial state with dominant role of gravitating matter is possible. In the course of expansion, the influence of gravitating matter and curvature-which as nonessential at the early stage in comparison with sourceless ϕ-field — becomes dominant, and all models approach the ‘Machian’ ones which differs slightly from corresponding GR-models. If ω is negative (ω〈−6) the sourceless ϕ-field slows down the initial expansion and increases essentially the real age of the Universe; it can also influence the primordial nuclear synthesis by diminishing in particular the content of He4. It is shown that a knowledge of the signĠ gives us the information about the nature of the initial Universe state.
