Notes: It is shown quantitatively that the formation of holes through the skin of membranes, prepared by the quick immersion in water of polyetherimides in solution in N-methylpyrrolidone, is governed by the solvent mobility. The surface pattern observed by videomicroscopy exhibits a characteristic distance between neighbouring holes (≃5 μm) which is a linear function of D-1s; Ds is the solvent diffusion coefficient in the polymeric solution, measured using a pulsedfield gradient NMR technique. The dependence of this distance on the solvent concentration in water is also characterized.

Notes: Summary The kinetics of adsorption of pure polydimethylsiloxane or of bimodal mixtures, onto silica aggregates, was observed from the melt as a function both of polymer weight fraction (2.5 to 20 g/g) and of the specific area (50, 150 and 300 m2/g). Attention was focused on filled polymers wherein silica aggregates are connected to one another by adsorbed chains to form a network. Results were analysed according to a molecular approach. All observed kinetics curves were found to obey a property of superposition by using a suitable reduced time variable defined as : ; is the number average molecular weight and Qi is the initial amount of polymer per unit mass of silica. The rate of adsorption is proportional to 1/Qi.

Description: Phosphorylation sites in members of the protein kinase A (PKA), PKG, and PKC kinase subfamily are conserved. Thus, the PKB kinase PDK1 may be responsible for the phosphorylation of PKC isotypes. PDK1 phosphorylated the activation loop sites of PKCzeta and PKCdelta in vitro and in a phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase)-dependent manner in vivo in human embryonic kidney (293) cells. All members of the PKC family tested formed complexes with PDK1. PDK1-dependent phosphorylation of PKCdelta in vitro was stimulated by combined PKC and PDK1 activators. The activation loop phosphorylation of PKCdelta in response to serum stimulation of cells was PI 3-kinase-dependent and was enhanced by PDK1 coexpression.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Le Good, J A -- Ziegler, W H -- Parekh, D B -- Alessi, D R -- Cohen, P -- Parker, P J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1998 Sep 25;281(5385):2042-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Protein Phosphorylation Laboratory, Imperial Cancer Research Fund, 44 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3PX, UK.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/9748166" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: GaAs layers that contain small Fe-based precipitates have been grown using molecular-beam epitaxy. The layers were produced either by codepositing Fe during GaAs growth or by first depositing a thin layer of an Fe-Ga alloy and then growing a capping layer of GaAs. Microstructural characterization of the layers was performed by using transmission electron microscopy. For those samples in which the Fe alloy layer was deposited, the layer disappeared after GaAs growth, leaving behind Fe-containing precipitates distributed throughout the GaAs overlayer. Precipitates were also formed in Fe codeposited samples. The sizes and number densities of the precipitates were dependent on the growth method used, with mean diameters ranging from 21 to 47 nm and number densities from 1013–1015 per cm3. The phase, orientation, and morphology of the particles were also dependent on the growth conditions used, with FeAs and Fe being observed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The antiviral activities of some naturally occurring anthraquinones bianthrones, and hypericin derivatives were compared by the end-point CPE (viral cytopathic effects) method and plaque assays. Under optimal conditions of exposure to light, hypericin, 7,7′-dichlorohypericin and 5,7-dichloroemodin exhibited strong inhibitory activity against HSV-1 (herpes simplex virus type 1) in both assays. Partial inactivation of the virus was shown by emodin, 7-chloroemodin and 7-chloro-1-O-methylemodin; the bianthrones and other anthraquinones were found to be inactive. Antiviral activity appeared to be, positively correlated with increasing substitution of chlorine in the anthraquinone structure. In the absence of light, only hypericin and 7,7′-dichlorohypericin displayed detectable activity.

Notes: Abstract Data on monthly variations of the duration of pregnancy, collected from the literature, were compared for man, cattle, buffalo and horse. This comparison showed a similar trend occurring in the different species, indicating the existence of a general factor, participating in causing the variations. The possibility that this factor is, in an indirect way, connected with daylight changes, is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Methanolic extracts from heads of the wax moth, Galleria mellonella L. contain several factors that stimulate oviposition of virgin females in vivo and spontaneous contractions of the oviduct in vitro of the cricket, Gryllus bimaculatus. The myotropic and egglaying activities behaved distinctly during all steps of purification, including fractionation on reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography. A novel neuropeptide was isolated from Galleria mellonella. The peptide does not increase the motility of isolated cricket oviducts. Among 13 other myotropic or non-myotropic factors studied, none were found to be as potent as the new peptide in stimulating egg-laying activity. The dose-response curves of myotropic and non-myotropic factors indicate that (i) proctolin, l-glutamate, octopamine, leucokinin-VI, leucopyrokinin, ecdysone and 20-hydroxy-ecdysone, or equivalent structures, might be involved in Galleria mellonella oviposition control, and (ii) that only the novel wax moth neuropeptide has the ability to trigger egg laying in that insect. The significance of these findings is discussed.
