Notes: The HLA allogenotypes DRl/Br, DR3 and DR10 (entitled risk HLA markers) have been reported as being genetic markers for the predisposition to experience unexplained recurrent fetal losses. The aim of the study was to determine whether the putative risk HLA markers might also be markers for the risk of pregnancy loss in sisters and wives of brothers of women with unexplained recurrent fetal losses. Information concerning pregnancy outcomes among the relatives of 146 consecutive women with unexplained recurrent fetal losses was collected. Ninety-five of the full sisters, 69 of the full brothers and 50 of the wives of the brothers were HLA typed. Sisters who had experienced at least one previous pregnancy loss (affected women) shared more HLA haplotypes with the proband than unaffected sisters, when the proband was positive for the risk markers (P= 0.02). More affected than unaffected sisters and brothers’ wives were positive for the risk markers (P 〈 0.005 and P 〈 0.03; respectively). The lowest estimate of the odds ratio for experiencing pregnancy loss among sisters and brothers’ wives who were positive compared with those negative for the risk markers was 3.5 (95% credible interval = 1.9-5.8). It is concluded that maternal DRl/Br, DR3 and DR10 allogenotypes seem to be genetic markers for the risk of pregnancy loss among relatives of women with unexplained recurrent fetal losses. The pattern of inheritance suggests a polygenic mode of inheritance with alleles linked to the risk HLA markers interacting with non-HLA linked genes expressed on the fetus or the trophoblast.

Notes: The effects of periodically repeated geotropic stimulations (geotropic pulses) on sunflower hypocotyls are studied. The experimental results agree with predictions from a theory for geotropic movements of the hypocotyl.A sunflower hypocotyl performs circumnutations around or across the plumb line with a period of about 2.5 hours. These oscillations can be entrained to periodically repeated geotropic pulses with a period in a region around 2.5 hours. The limits of this “region of entrainment’ for geotropic pulses are studied. In the region of entrainment resonance curves, i.e., the amplitude of the oscillations plotted as a function of the period of the geotropic pulses, are obtained. The phase differences (measured as time differences) between the geotropic pulse rhythms and the resulting oscillations are also studied. Beat phenomena are predicted and recorded outside the region in which the plants can be entrained. The results are discussed in relation to oscillating phenomena of circadian type (i.e., with a period close to 24 hours), and many similarities are pointed out.

Notes: A theory for the geotropic movements of the Heliunthus unnuus hypocotyl has been given earlier by Johnsson et ul. In the present paper this theory is tested by extensive experiments. The magnitude as well as the rate of geotropic curvature are found to be in agreement with the theoretical predictions.Further, the geotropic reaction time, defined as the time between the start of geotropic stimulation and the start of the geotropic reaction is determined as a function of the stimulation angle with respect to the plumb line. A slight variation found in the reaction time is included in the theory.

Notes: Summary The specificity of Alcian blue staining has been investigated on a material comprising the adenohypophysis from 26 human foetuses. Two distinct types of alcianophilic cells were observed. The first cell type appears about 28 mm CRL forming small groups at the epithelial-mesenchymal junction and beneath the anlage of the fibrous capsule. Besides its alcianophilic property the cell shows a pronounced maltase-resistant PAS-positivity. The alcianophilia is due to carboxylgroups — probably of proteins as no sialic acid could be detected. By the performic acid — Alcian blue method the cell seems to show a high content of SH and S-S groups. The second type of cell appears about 70 mm CRL and is mostly located singly. It shows a pronounced alcianophilia — probably due to sulphate groups and to some extent to carboxyl groups. The role of the alcianophilic properties of the cells in typing definite cells of the foetal adenohypophysis was discussed. — Finally the pitfalls caused by different fixatives and by the use of the general polychrome staining methods for the typing of pituitary parenchymal cells were discussed.

Notes: Summary A histochemical study of the renal interstitial cells demonstrates the absence of two of the principal enzymes involved in the citric acid cycle, the cells thus seem to lack the ability to break down fatty acids. On the other hand the renal interstitial cells demonstrate enzyme activity which could be indirect evidence of fatty acid synthesis. A pronounced nodular acid phosphatase activity and unspecific esterase activity were noticed as well as an uniform cytoplasmic esterase activity.

Notes: Summary Several factors influencing the steroiddehydrogenase histochemistry were investigated: diffusion of enzyme; inactivation of enzyme; effects of the steroid solvents commonly used; the validity in localization of the enzyme activity; “nothing dehydrogenase” reaction. 1. The importance in controlling the diffusion of each enzyme system to be studied is emphasized. Provided that the presence of SH-groups in the active centre of the dehydrogenase can be proved, a control experiment using a double-section incubation method should be carried out. 2. A comparison between the use of unfixed and briefly prefixed sections is recommended in order to avoid a possible distortion of the tissue during the incubation. The influence of prefixation on diffusion of enzymes or reaction products as well as on inactivation of enzymes must be studied. 3. The steroid solvents—especially dimethyl formamide caused a morphological distortion, and an inactivation and/or extraction of reaction products (the red monoformazan) in fresh frozen sections, these solvents should therefore be handled with caution. A special mixture of dimethyl formamide and propylene glycol is recommended. 4. The steroid should be completely soluble in the incubation medium in order to secure zero order kinetics. 5. Avoidance of sulphydryl “nothing dehydrogenase” reaction, since the reaction predominantly manifests itself as a red formazan obscuring sites with low dehydrogenase activity. 6. The localization of the NAD(P)H oxidase systems must be controlled, in order to ensure that they should not be a limiting factor in the detection of the dehydrogenase activity. Secondly, this investigation may act as a control on diffusion of dehydrogenase and/or reduced coenzyme. 7. That the investigation of the incubation time needed for initial visual reaction allows a certain quantitative estimation of the concentration of enzyme localized at different sites in the same section. The investigation should also include the red formazan, since it has recently been proved to be an intermediary step in the enzymic reduction of Nitro BT, and as such may reflect sites with low enzyme concentration. Further, some of the functional aspects of the activity of 11β-hydroxysteroiddehydrogenaseNAD(P)H oxidase systems in the thymus were discussed, and lastly the localization of these systems in the kidney was revised.

Notes: Abstract Since 1985 measurements of gasses, aerosols, precipitation and throughfall have been carried out at three forest sites in Denmark with equal aged Norway Spruce plantations. The times series show a downward trend in the concentration of sulphur dioxide. Particulate sulphate, ammonia and particulate ammonium and the total nitrate seem to have a more constant concentration level. The wet deposition measurements show a decreasing trend in the content of acid (protons), sulphate, ammonium and nitrate, though for the nitrogen compounds it is only a slight fall. A decrease in concentrations of protons and sulphate is also seen in the throughfall measurements, in throughfall the nitrogen compounds hardly seem to decrease.
