    Description: We report the detection of Cepheid Variable stars in the barred spiral galaxy NGC925, using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2). Twelve V (F555W), four I (F814W) and three B (F439W) epochs of cosmic ray split observations were obtained. Eighty Cepheids were discovered, with periods from 6 to +-80 days. Light curves of the Cepheids are presented, and their corresponding period-luminosity diagrams are discussed.

    Description: This document describes a simple, light weight, and scalable mechanism capable of deploying flexible or rigid substrate solar arrays that have been configured in an accordion-like folding scheme. This mechanism is unique in that it incorporates a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator made of Nitinol. This paper documents the design of the mechanism in full detail while offering to designers a foundation of knowledge by which they can develop future applications with SMA's.

    Description: This paper describes the analysis on integration requirements, CO2 compressor in particular, for integration of Carbon Dioxide Removal Assembly (CDRA) and CO2 Reduction Assembly (CRA) as a part of the Node 3 project previously conducted at JSC/NASA. A system analysis on the volume and operation pressure range of the CO2 accumulator was conducted. The hardware and operational configurations of the CO2 compressor were developed. The performance and interface requirements of the compressor were specified. An existing Four-Bed Molecular Sieve CO2 removal computer model was modified into a CDRA model and used in analyzing the requirements of the CDRA CO2 compressor. This CDRA model was also used in analyzing CDRA operation parameters that dictate CO2 pump sizing. Strategy for the pump activation was also analyzed.

    Description: The scientific requirements and implications for the instruments and telescope design for the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) are described. A candidate concept is a deployable, 8 m diameter telescope, optimized for the near infrared region, but featuring instruments capable of observing up to 30 micrometers.     Description: We present OVRO interferometric observations of linearly polarized emission from magnetically aligned dust grains which allow the magnetic field geometry in nearby star formation regions to be probed on scales ranging from 100 to 3000 AU. Current results include observations of the young stellar objects NGC1333/IRAS 4A, IRAS 16293-2422 and Orion IRc2-KL.

    Description: Common Berthing Mechanism (CBM) provides the structural interface between separate International Space Station (ISS) elements, such as the Laboratory and Node modules. The CBM consists of an active and a passive half that join together with structural bolts. The seal at this interface is the CBM-to-CBM molded seal. The CBM-to-CBM interface is assembled on orbit, thus the seals can be exposed to the space environment for up to 65 hours. Atomic Oxygen/Vacuum Ultraviolet radiation (AO/VUV) in space is a potential hazard to the seals. Testing was conducted to determine the effect on leakage of the CBM-to-CBM seal material exposed to AO/VUV. The sealing materials were S383 silicone and V835 fluorocarbon material. Control samples, which were not exposed to the AO/VUV environment, were used to ensure that if any changes in leakage occurred, they could be attributed to the AO/VUV exposure. After exposure to the AO/VUV environment the leakage increase was dramatic for the fluorocarbon. This testing was a major contributing factor in selecting silicone as the CBM-to-CBM seal material.

    Description: The results of spectral and spatial analysis of overlapping Rosat position sensitive proportional counter (PSPC) and Advanced Satellite for Cosmology and Astrophysics (ASCA) scanning imaging spectroradiometer (SIS) observations of the NGC 2300 group are presented. The spatial analysis of the co-added fields reveals that the diffuse X-ray gas can be traced to at least 25 arcmin. The temperature of the gas was found to be approximately 0.88 keV. The mass of gas within 0.33 Mpc is equal to 1.39 x 10(exp 12) solar mass. Comparing the mass of the galaxies plus the mass of hot gas the total mass of the system yields an observed baryonic fraction of 12 percent to 18 percent.

    Description: Rotordynamic coefficients obtained from testing two different hydrostatic bearings are compared to values predicted by two different computer programs. The first set of test data is from a relatively long (L/D=1) orifice compensated hydrostatic bearing tested in water by Texas A&M University (TAMU Bearing No.9). The second bearing is a shorter (L/D=.37) bearing and was tested in a lower viscosity fluid by Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell (Rocketdyne 'Generic' Bearing) at similar rotating speeds and pressures. Computed predictions of bearing rotordynamic coefficients were obtained from the cylindrical seal code 'ICYL', one of the industrial seal codes developed for NASA-LeRC by Mechanical Technology Inc., and from the hydrodynamic bearing code 'HYDROPAD'. The comparison highlights the difference the bearing has on the accuracy of the predictions. The TAMU Bearing No. 9 test data is closely matched by the predictions obtained for the HYDROPAD code (except for added mass terms) whereas significant differences exist between the data from the Rocketdyne 'Generic' bearing the code predictions. The results suggest that some aspects of the fluid behavior in the shorter, higher Reynolds Number 'Generic' bearing may not be modeled accurately in the codes. The ICYL code predictions for flowrate and direct stiffness approximately equal those of HYDROPAD. Significant differences in cross-coupled stiffness and the damping terms were obtained relative to HYDROPAD and both sets of test data. Several observations are included concerning application of the ICYL code.

    Description: A 10 micron silicate emission feature has been discovered in the spectra of comets P/BorrelIy and P/Faye at R approximately 1.5 AU. These are the first short period comets in which silicate emission has definitely been detected. The broad emission features are about 25% above the continuum. No emission feature was present in the spectrum of P/Schaumasse; it is possible that the nucleus of P/Schaumasse was directly detected. If all of the observed flux originated from the nucleus, then the effective radius is about 3 km; the observed color temperature is consistent with a rapidly rotating nucleus. We present models that show how the shape of the silicate feature can depend on the way in which silicate and absorbing material are mixed in the grains.
