Notes: Abstract  The populations of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) propagules by the most probable number method in some mollisols and their correlations with some important soil properties were determined. On average, the six soils, Phoolbagh clay loam, Beni silty clay loam, Haldi loam, Nagla loam, Khamia sandy loam and Patherchatta sandy loam contained 4.9, 4.0, 7.9, 7.9, 3.3 and 13.0 propagules/g soil, respectively, i.e. none of the soils was found to be high in VAM. The size of the VAM population was compared to soil properties such as pH, organic carbon, sand content, available phosphorus and available potassium, cation-exchange capacity, silt and clay contents. A significant positive correlation (r=0.586) was only found with available soil phosphorus (P〈0.05) and a significant negative correlation (r=–0.555) with soil clay content (P〈0.05).

Notes: Summary m-(Mercaptoacetamido)phenol (m-MAP) is used for the selective and characteristic detection of ferric ion, cobalt and molybdate. The reagent produces deep green precipitate at pH 6 with ferric ion in the absence of tartrate, purple red precipitate with cobalt around pH 7 even in the presence of tartrate, and reduces molybdate to a yellow green to blue solution below pH 3. The sensitivity of the cobalt test is exceptionally high. The three elements can be tested in the presence of each other and the related metal ions.

Mit verschiedenen, aus einer Mehrzahl Komponenten bestehenden Gemischen wurden gute Ergebnisse erhalten. DieR f -Werte der üblichen Kationen wurden angegeben.
Notes: Summary The paper chromatographic resolution potentiality of the solvent system chloroform-acetone-iso-amyl alcohol-11N HCl (1 ∶ 1 ∶ 1 ∶ 0.5v/v) for the metal cations has been tested. Successful results with various multiconstituent mixtures are presented andR f values of the common metal ions are tabulated.

Notes: Abstract A study was conducted around Chandigarh (Punjab), India to assess the effect of Populus deltoides shelterbelt on wheat. Crop density, root and shoot length, biomass and grain yield of wheat at crop maturity were significantly lower, up to 12 ± 1 m in the fields sheltered by P. deltoides than in unsheltered plots. The reduction of biomass and grain yield of wheat were comparatively more than that of other parameters. The observed reduction in the growth and yield of wheat could be attributed to phytotoxic interference of the phenolics from the tree with the crop.

Notes: Summary Pretreatment of spores of the blue-green alga Anabaena doliolum with caffeine is antagonistic to UV lethality and posttreatment with caffeine is synergistic to UV lethality and mutagenicity. The results of photoreactivation experiments suggest that photoreactivation is independent of photosynthesis in blue-green algae.

Notes: Summary Induction of ascospore formation in hydrocarbon utilizing ascosporogenous yeasts was observed during the growth of the yeasts on gas oil, diesel oil, white kerosene and n-alkanes. Studies of relationships between cell morphology and cell growth showed that ascospores were formed during the active growth phase on gas oil but not on glucose. Contact of yeast cells with hydrocarbons may be the possible reason for sporogenesis on hydrocarbons.

Notes: Summary A spraying method for the inoculation of seeds with Rhizobium is described. The flowers sprayed with a heavy inoculum of Rhizobium thrice at two days interval will produce seeds having the same Rhizobium. These seeds showed the capacity to nodulate on germination. re]19720504

Notes: Abstract Productivity, sustainability and economics of agriculture, forestry and agroforestry land use practices were compared over a six year period in a split plot experiment on a moderately alkali soil of the Central Soil Salinity Research Institute, Karnal, India. Three commercial trees of the area formed the main plot treatments and four crop sequences were the sub-plots. The trees were: poplar (Populus deltoides), Acacia (Acacia nilotica) and Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus tereticornis), and the crop sequences were (1) rice (Oryza sativa)-wheat (Triticum aestivum) for four years followed by guinea grass (Panicum maximum)-oats (Avena sativa) for two years; (2) rice-Berseem (Trifolium alexandrium) for four years followed by cowpea (Vigna unquiculata)-Berseem for two years; (3) pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan)/sorghum (Sorghum bicolor)-mustard (Brassica juncea) for three years followed by turmeric (Curcuma longa) for three years and (4) no intercrops (only trees). Eucalyptus and poplar gained maximum height, girth and woody biomass in six years when they were intercropped with rice crops in sequences 1 and 2. Acacia attained maximum growth in the absence of intercrops. Protein content in guinea grass was more under tree canopies than in the open. Soil amelioration during five years followed the order: Acacia based system 〉 poplar 〉 Eucalyptus 〉 sole crops. The benefit-cost ratio was heighest (2.88) in poplar based system and minimum (1.86) in Acacia based system. The study indicated that growing trees and agricultural crops together is a better land use option in terms of productivity, maintenance of soil conditions and economics.
