    Notes: Abstract Quartz-hosted, synthetic CO2-H2O fluid inclusions behave as open systems with respect to diffusional transfer of hydrogen during laboratory-simulated metamorphic re-equilibration at 650, 750 and 825°C and 1.5 kbar total pressure with fO2 defined by the C-CH4 buffer. Microthermometry and Raman spectroscopy show that the initial CO2-H2O inclusions become CO2-CH4-H2-H2Oinclusions after diffusive influx of hydrogen from the reducing confining medium. Measurable changes are observed in inclusion compositions after only 15 days of re-equilibration, implying significant hydrogen mobility at still lower temperatures over geological time spans. Results of synthetic inclusion re-equilibrium experiments have profound implications for the interpretation of natural fluid-inclusion data; failure to account for potential hydrogen migration in inclusions from high-temperature geological environments may lead to erroneous estimates of P-T, and/or the compositions of metamorphic fluids.

    Notes: Abstract. Mubangwe Farm, northern Malawi, was brought into cultivation from savanna vegetation with Brachystegia between 1970 and 1983 to produce tobacco, maize and groundnuts. Because of poor yields even with inputs of lime, N, P and K the fields were soon abandoned. The soils were only moderately acidic with little likelihood of Al toxicity. They held only small amounts of exchangeable Ca2+ (down to 0.01 cmolc/kg) particularly at depth. Phosphorus availability was low particularly in the subsoil. A minus-one pot experiment showed that the growth of sorghum in topsoil samples was limited by lack of N, P, S and Ca. The lower availabilities of P and Ca in the subsoil are therefore likely to be major limitations to growth, allowing only limited root penetration. The loamy sand to sandy clay soils generally had small available water capacities (down to 0.07 cm3/cm3) which, with restricted root development, may have lead to drought in dry periods during the growing season. The findings emphasize the need to measure both subsoil and topsoil properties when new areas of land are being developed for crop production.

    Notes: Abstract. Kriging is used to provide detailed quantitative information for a range of soil characteristics across the floodplain of the River Gambia. Application of spatial statistics to a large area with a coarse grid of data points produces spurious patterns unless the area is first partitioned into soil-geomorphic mapping units, each of which has a unique pattern of spatial variation. Even combining classical soil survey method with spatial statistics, the large short-range variability of acid sulphate soils means that single factor maps conceal a large element of uncertainty. A more robust procedure is to map the probability of occurrence of critical values of key characteristics.

    Notes: Abstract. Ten chalk topsoils (0-25 cm) were repacked into columns in the laboratory. After leaching similar to one year's throughflow in the field, loss of K was equivalent to between 9 and 74kg K/ha. This represented between 3 and 30% of the initial exchangeable K with which loss was poorly correlated. Loss was dependant on the soil solution concentration and was inversely proportional to potassium buffer power.The loss of magnesium in the same columns was between 10 and 22 kg Mg/ha (6-21% of the initial exchangeable Mg). Magnesium loss was poorly correlated with exchangeable Mg.When KCl fertilizer was incorporated into the soils, the increase in leaching of potassium was 1–35% of the K addition. Application to the top of the column resulted in less leaching than when the K was incorporated. Leaching of magnesium was increased by up to 5 kg Mg/ha.Potassium leaching may be delayed by the underlying A/C horizon but pure chalk, with an extremely low buffer power for K, has little ability to retain K. Extremely calcareous topsoils were the most leaky although in practice it is the organic chalk soils on which it is most difficult to attain adequate K levels. On all chalk soils, maintenance of a high K level with K fertilizer is likely to cause unnecessary long-term leaching losses. Annual, rather than biennial, fertilizer applications are to be preferred.

    Notes: The recent addition of trivalent metals to soil and their subsequent movement within the biosphere are of concern. For this reason, the sorption of chromium (Cr), yttrium (Y). rhodium (Rh), lanthanum (La), praseodymium (Pr) and gadolinium (Gd) in two contrasting acid soils has been determined. Except for Rh, the sorption of the other trivalent metals conformed well to the Langmuir equation with derived sorption parameters similar for all the trivalent species tested. Calculation of the buffer powers indicated that under both small (0·01 mmol kg−1) and large (1 mmol kg−1) trivalent metal soil loadings 〉 99·5% of the metals will be associated with the exchange phase with small quantities present in the bulk soil solution (〈0·5%). It seems that the slight availability of metals within the bulk soil solution will slow the rate of trivalent metal bioremediation of contaminated sites.

    Notes: Sixty multiparous Holstein/Friesian cows were used in a 2 × 2 factorial design trial to determine the effect of the administration of bovine somatotropin (BST), at either 60 or 120 ± 3 d post partum, on milk production. All cows were offered ad libitum a forage mixture containing, on a dry-mailer (DM) basis, grass and maize silage in a 1:1 ratio and 4 kg d−1 fresh weight of concentrate, which contained 115 and 495 g kg−1 DM of neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and crude protein (CP), respectively, and 13–5 MJ kg−1 DM metabolizable energy (ME). BST-treated cows received subcutaneous injections of a prolonged-release formulation of BST (sometribove). Injections were administered into the ischiorectal fossa at 14-d intervals for the remainder of the lactation. This schedule resulted in sixteen and twelve injections cow−1 when treatment w as in it rate d at 60 and 120 + 3 d post partum respectively. This corresponded to treatment periods of 32 and 24 weeks, in which the production responses were measured. When compared with control cows, the administration of BST from 60 and 120 ± 3 d post partum increased mean milk yield by 1–2 and 3.3 kg day−1 respectively, although only the latter milk-yield response was significant (P 〈0.001). The administration of BST produced a small nonsignificant increase in DM intake, no effect on milk composition and a small but significant reduction in body condition In conclusion a significant milk-yield response can be obtained from the use of BST in high-forage, low-concentrate feeding systems if forage quality is high and treatment initiation is delayed until mid-lactation. This is illustrated by the fact that the lactation yield increased from 6054 to 6842 kg. and was obtained when using only 1.2 t of concentrate.

    Notes: A meter using electronic capacitance to estimate weight of standing vegetation was first tested in 1949. It proved to be faster and more accurate than most indirect methods of measurement. Since then, other similar instruments have been built and several problems have become apparent. Short or dry vegetation, non-homogeneous distribution of vegetation, non-homogeneous phenology, and electronic circuit instability were the major problems. The chief steps in the development of capacitance instruments for estimating vegetation weight are discussed. The significance of each of the major problems has been greatly reduced by improvements in instrumentation. The technique of using electronic capacitance has now proved itself useful under a wide variety of range conditions.

    Notes: The cathepsins in saline muscle extracts of three species of Pacific sole were investigated. A buffered hemoglobin solution (pH 3.0) served as substrate for the enzyme assay. No apparent change in catheptic activity in muscle homogenates of English sole was observed during 25 days of frozen (−26 °C) storage. Partial characterization of the cathepsins indicated a pH activity optimum of 3.0–3.5 for rex and petrale sole but a slightly higher PH optimum of 3.2–3.8 for English sole. The three species showed a temperature optimum of 45 °C for hemoglobin splitting. A wide variation in catheptic activity within the species was observed for rex sole while English and petrale sole showed more uniform catheptic activity. The mean activities for the three species varied significantly (P 〈 0.05). Results of sensory evaluation of muscles containing high and low levels of catheptic activity from the three species of sole did not support the assumption that cathepsins have a substantial influence upon the quality of marine food fish.
