    Notes: Abstract The aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases exist as two enzyme families which were apparently generated by divergent evolution from two primordial synthetases. The two classes of enzymes exhibit intriguing familial relationships, in that they are distributed nonrandomly within the codon-amino acid matrix of the genetic code. For example, all XCX codons code for amino acids handled by class II synthetases, and all but one of the XUX codons code for amino acids handled by class I synthetases. One interpretation of these patterns is that the synthetases coevolved with the genetic code. The more likely explanation, however, is that the synthetases evolved in the context of an already-established genetic code—a code which developed earlier in an RNA world. The rules which governed the development of the genetic code, and led to certain patterns in the coding catalog between codons and amino acids, would also have governed the subsequent evolution of the synthetases in the context of a fixed code, leading to patterns in synthetase distribution such as those observed. These rules are (1) conservative evolution of amino acid and adapter binding sites and (2) minimization of the disruptive effects on protein structure caused by codon meaning changes.

    Notes: Abstract We are investigating the role of high performance computing for support of a comprehensive pathology image atlas. The primary computing component is a database access mechanism providing retrieval by content based image matching (CBIR) along with traditional term based queries. An organization based on information theoretic and Bayesian principles using decision trees and signature files is being developed. The essential role of HPC is the discovery, selection, and optimization of medically useful image feature sets via genetic algorithm and simulated annealing methods. This paper outlines the problem area along with aspects of the underlying theoretical basis and distinguishing computing characteristics. Efficiency of key portions of the computations can be greatly improved by using parallelism within the computer word length using bit counting instructions to implement voting and multimedia style instruction sets for low level image processing.

    Notes: Summary We investigate the absorption spectrum and the distribution of radiative decay times for two-dimensional excitons in semiconductor quantum wells, as affected by an adiabatic white-noise random potential. Such a potential could result from atomic-scale fluctuations in the composition of an alloy semiconductor, or in quantum well thickness. We find in general that the shortest radiative decay time is directly proportional to the inhomogeneous width of the exciton line in absorption, itself proportional to the correlation parameter for the random potential.

    Notes: Abstract  Eight compounds exuded from young roots of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) were separated by two-dimensional HPTLC, by HPLC and GC, and were identified by spectroscopic methods (ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy and mass spectrometry) as 4′,7-dihydroxyflavone, apigenin, naringenin, chrysoeriol and isoliquiritigenin. Structural assignments were confirmed by comparison with authentic standards. The capacity to induce β-galactosidase activity in Rhizobium sp. NGR234 containing a nod box::lacZ fusion on plasmid pA27 identified these flavonoids and the chalcone as nod gene inducers. This indicates the important role of these compounds in nodulation of this legume tree.

    Notes: Abstract  The density field of cylindrical supersonic jets is investigated by Mach-Zehnder interferometry. The optical phase shift is extracted from the interferograms by digital image processing. Disturbing turbulence effects in the free shear layer are eliminated by sequential averaging of the phase shifts of several experimental images. The resulting steady state phase shift is used to calculate time-averaged interferograms and to reconstruct the density field by computerized tomography. The obtained results are compared with theoretical predictions and good quantitative agreement is found.

    Notes: Abstract  In this paper we discuss a novel application of holographic interferometry in the simultaneous quantitative visualization of high-speed, oscillatory flow and temperature fields in complex flow geometries. We consider cases of (i) self-sustained oscillatory flows with main flow imposed in grooved and communicating channels as well as (ii) oscillating thermofluid processes with zero mean velocity in a thermoacoustic refrigerator model. Examples showing unsteady temperature distributions obtained by real-time holographic interferometry combined with high-speed cinematography illustrate the possibilities of the approach introduced in the paper. Our study shows that temperature distributions accurately mirror flow structures in certain types of complex, unsteady flows, thus allowing, apart from the measurement of temperature profiles and heat transfer, also the measurement of oscillatory amplitudes, frequencies, wavelengths as well as the speed of propagation of traveling waves by applying digital image processing techniques. In the grooved and communicating channels it is possible to visualize the structure of the Tollmien–Schlichting waves through isotherms by using the infinite fringe field alignment of holographic interferometry. In the thermoacoustic refrigerator model, small amplitude temperature oscillations generated by the acoustic standing wave are visualized and measured. Image processing as well as data reduction procedures used in the analysis of these flow fields are discussed in the paper. Experimental data obtained by applying the techniques introduced in the paper show good agreement with theory and results of numerical simulations. Our study suggests that using temperature as tracer offers numerous advantages in the study of certain types of complex, unsteady flows.

    Notes: Abstract Open-path monitoring of the atmosphere using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry has recently become a useful real-time in situ analytical technique. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently formulating Method TO-16, a protocol for infrared remote sensing of the hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) identified in EPA’s Clean Air Act of 1990. To support infrared based sensing technologies, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is currently developing a standard quantitative spectral database of the HAPs based on gravimetrically prepared samples. This paper presents the protocol used to prepare the gravimetric mixtures and initial results.

    Notes: Abstract  Heat fluxes close to the edge of a heated solid plate aligned parallel to the axis of an acoustic standing wave were measured for drive ratios DR≡P A/p m of 1, 2 and 3. It was found that at the highest drive ratio (3), the resulting heat flux vector at the edge of the plate is directed into the plate, opposite to the direction of the heat flux imposed by the resistive heaters within the plate. This observation confirms the thermoacoustic effect previously detected in the visualized temperature fields and discussed in part I of this paper. Through the energy balance the magnitudes of the heat fluxes into the plate, caused by the thermoacoustic effect, were determined. The measured data are in good agreement with numerical and analytical predictions.
