Notes: The phase behavior of a hybrid polymer network (HPN) composed of poly[(propylene glycol maleate)-co-(propylene glycol phthalate)] crosslinked with styrene and polyester-urethane crosslinked with methylene-bis-ortho-chloroaniline was examined. The correlation between phase separation and impact strength of the HPNs is discussed. The composition of HPNs has an effect on their properties.

Notes: The polyacrylic acid derivative, the copolymer (PABAM) of acrylic acid (AA) and p-benzoic acid acrylamide (BAM) were prepared by polymeric reaction. The coordinate structure of the polymer-Eu3+ complexes was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The fluorescence intensity of the PABAM-Eu3+ complex was enhanced because of introduction of a BAM unit in the polyacrylic acid and reached a maximum when the mole ratio of AA to BAM was about 1 : 1.The ternary complexes of Eu3+-polymer-1,10-phenanthroline (PRL), or 2,2-bipyridine (BPD) were synthesized. The polymers used were PABAM and polyacrylic acid (PAA). The fluorescence intensity of the polymer-Eu3+ complexes was increased by 5∼21 times owing to the introduction of PRL and BPD.

Notes: Electrically conductive polypyrrole (PPy)/poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) composite fibers have been prepared by continuous vapor phase polymerization at a speed of 0.5 ∼ 1.5 m/min. The main parameters have been examined, and the conducting fibers with the best properties of electrical conductivity 0.68 s/cm, tensile strength 2731 N/mm2, and the elongation at break 4.8% were obtained by using FeCl3 · 6H2O as the oxidizing agent. The results of elemental analysis, wide-angle X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM of the composite fibers are also reported. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Epoxy functionalized siloxanes (EFS) are a novel class of UV curable monomers that can be rapidly photopolymerized to give transparent coatings and composites. Thin films of these materials have been subjected to low Earth orbit exposure to atomic oxygen (AO) aboard the space shuttle. It was found that UV cured samples of all four different EFS monomers exhibited excellent AO resistance both to ambient in-flight conditions as well as exposure at 120°C. Based on SEM, STM, XPS, and weight loss data, it was proposed that AO exposure of these materials efficiently produces a thin layer of SiOx at the surface of the sample. This layer provides a barrier toward further attack by AO. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Gas-solids circulating fluidized beds have been successfully used in catalytic cracking of heavy oil, coal combustion, and some metallurgical and physical processes (Grace, 1990). Gas-liquid-solids fluidized beds are operated mainly in conventional fluidization regimes without solids circulation or in the transport regime with low solids holdups (less than 5%) (Fan, 1989). A circulating/fast fluidization regime, however, has not been studied. A three-phase circulating fluidized bed has several potential applications in biochemical and chemical processes. Three-phase fluidized-bed bioreactors generally use light and small particles (Berk et al., 1984). Circulating operation can promote solids mixing and increase product throughput per unit bed cross section, while high shear stress can promote biofilm renewal (Pirozzi et al., 1990). In three-phase hydrotreating reactors, solids catalysts lose their activity due to the deposit of metal and coke on the surface. Circulating operation not only regenerates deactivated catalyst continuously using accompanying downcomers but also transfers heat to and from the reactor. This article discusses the flow regimes of the three-phase circulating fluidized bed.

Notes: An absorptive chronopotentiometric method was developed for the determination of trace aluminum. The method relies on the adsorptive accumulation of a AlIII-1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone-3-sulfonic acid complex on the surface of a hanging mercury drop electrode. The optimum experimental conditions with respect to pH. preconcentration potential, preconcentration time and concentration of 1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone-3-sulfonic acid have been investigated. The suggested procedure has been used for the determination of aluminum in natural and drinking water samples and the accuracy investigated by comparison with results obtained by atomic absorption spectrometry.

Notes: The multi-step synthesis of two benzimidazole trimethine cyanines as possible green sensitizing dyes (Gs3-1, Gs3-2) is reported. Compounds were characterized from UV-Vis, mass spectroscopic and NMR data. The charge density distributions of the two compounds, calculated using the semi-empirical MOPAC 93 package, are in agreement with assignments in NMR spectroscopy. Sensitizing properties of the cyanine dyes were evaluated in actual photographic T-grain emulsions.
