Notes: A compact storage ring has been designed with a method that uses a numerical integration of exact equations of motion and exact three-dimensional magnetic fields measured. A beam test has shown that betatron tunes and chromaticities can be calculated within accuracies of 0.2% and 10%, respectively. An agreement of measured and calculated closed orbit errors and the good corrections have shown that an alignment of nonisomagnetic bending magnets, the manufacture of coils, and measurements of magnetic fields have been made accurately. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A compact storage ring has been developed for industrial research such as x-ray lithography and material analysis. This machine is of a racetrack type with two superconducting bending magnets and only two normal conducting quadrupole magnets. The circumference is as short as 9.2 m. One quadrupole magnet per cell contributes to making the smaller machine. The injector is a synchrotron, and a full energy injection of 600 MeV is performed. The bending magnets excite a field of 3.5 T, and are operated in a persistent current mode. A decrease in a coil current is ΔI/I〈3×10−3/year. The helium consumption is as low as 2 l/h for two magnets. An iron shield of the magnet decreases a leakage flux to a terrestrial level at a point 3 m from the magnet. A beam current of 380 mA has been stored with no beam instability in spite of there being no correction of the chromaticities. Beam emittances were obtained from measured beam sizes and were in good agreement with calculated values. The coupling coefficient εy/εx is calculated as around 0.04. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Photoluminescence spectra of GaN grown by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition on sapphire show that by reactive ion etching, the intensity of the yellow luminescence (YL) band decreases compared to that of the as-grown GaN, due to nonradiative recombination at the damage-induced defect centers. The intensity of the YL in dry-etched GaN has been found to be dependent on rf power and postetch annealing. No change in intensity is observed with further etching indicating a uniform spread of yellow emitters in the epilayer which supports the view that point defects like VGa are the origin of the YL. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: The spectral decomposition of the path space of the vertex model associated to the vector representation of the quantized affine algebra is studied. We give a one-to-one correspondence between the spin configurations and the semistandard tableaux of skew Young diagrams. As a result we obtain a formula of the characters for the degeneracy of the spectrum in terms of skew Schur functions. We conjecture that our result describes the -module contents of the Yangian -module structures of the level 1 integrable modules of the affine Lie algebra . An analogous result is obtained also for a vertex model associated to the quantized twisted affine algebra , where characters appear for the degeneracy of the spectrum. The relations to the spectrum of the Haldane-Shastry and the Polychronakos models are also discussed.

Notes: Abstract Polonium-210 in phosphoric acid has been recognized as a significant source of alpha contamination of processed Si-wafers for memory devices of computer. In the present work, a convenient method was developed for the determination of trace210Po in phosphoric acid of high purity. For the determination,209Po was used as a yield tracer. The present method consists of (1) addition of the tracer to 5 ml aliquot of phosphoric acid sample, (2) pH adjustment (to 2) of the sample solution to make up electrolytic solution, (3) electrodeposition for the simultaneous achievement of Po separation and preparation of counting source on stainless-steel disc, and (4) alpha-ray spectrometry. By the developed method, more than 95% of Po was separated from phosphoric acid sample onto counting disc. The minimum detectable radioactivity of210Po in 5 ml of phosphoric acid was about 0.03 mBq by counting the electrodeposited alpha-activity for 10 days under a counting efficiency of ≈30%.

Notes: Abstract Cowpea (Vigna unguliculata Walp) is considered one of the most drought resistant species among the pulse crops. It was suggested that in the lower part of the stem, parenchymatous tissue for storing water has been developed for the function of drought resistance. However, such tissue has not been identified yet. In order to identify the water storing tissue in the stem of cowpea plant, the authors performed neutron radiography, which provides a non-destructive image of water distribution pattern in a plant. Common bean plant and soybean plant were used as references. Comparing the neutron radiograph for the stems of the plants, i.e., cowpea, common bean and soybean plants, the parenchymatous tissue with water storing function was distinguished in the intermode between primary leaf and the first trifoliate leaf specifically in cowpea plant.

Notes: Abstract Fifteen GSJ (Geological Survey of Japan) and six KIER (Korean Institute of Energy and Resources; now Korean Institute of Geology, Mining and Materials, KIGAM) “igneous rock series” and nine GSJ “sedimentary rock series” reference samples were analysed for 21–29 elements by neutron and/or photon activation analysis (NAA and PAA); 14 MeV-NAA for Si and Al, fission track method for U, radiochemical and instrumental NAA for rare earth elements, with reactor neutrons for the latter two. Instrumental neutron and photon AA for the remaining elements were performed with reactor neutrons and bremsstrahlung of end-point energy of 30 MeV, respectively. The reactor irradiations were performed at core sites and also a thermal column of the Kyoto University Research Reactor. All of the radioassays were performed by γ-ray spectrometry with HPGe-detectors. The present results from the different types of irradiation are compared and discussed in terms of elemental abundances and rock types.

Notes: Abstract Host phases of fallout239,240Pu and241Am were studied in the surface sediments obtained in 1994 from abyssal basins of relatively small area of the western North Pacific. An analytical procedure involving sequential chemical extraction was employed for partitioning the host phases of the nuclides in sediment into five fractions: (1) exchangeable (2) bound to carbonate, (3) bound to hydrous Fe-Mn oxides, (4) bound to organic matter and (5) residual. Decrease of total239,240Pu concentration with decreasing association of239,240Pu with organic matter, high241Am/239,240Pu activity ratio in carbonate phase and somewhat high proportion of oxidized239,240Pu in leachable phases suggest a possibility of post-depositional diagenetic remobilization of Pu from sediment to water column.

Notes: Abstract We present the kinetics of seven element profiles, macroscopic elements, Na, Mg, Cl, K and Ca, as well as Al and Br, in every tissue of morningglory (Ipomoea nil L. c.v. Murasaki), from seedling to flowering stage. Barriers for the elements were formed even in the same tissue during different growing phases. Most of Na and Al remained in root tissue, showing the first barrier to the upper part of the plant. During the juvenile phase, the tissues lower than cotyledon stored the elements, especially Ca and Mg. The barrier at cotyledon did not disappear completely until seed ripening stage, except for K. Generally, late developing stem showed lower accumulation of the elements, which seemed to regulate the inflow of Mg, Ca, Cl and Br into flowering tissue. The concentrations of K, Ca, Cl and Br in leaf were kept constant in spite of twice or three times higher concentration of these elements in leaf petiole. After flowering, selective element accumulation was observed during seed development, where most of the elements were accumulated into seed wall, not in seed. Higher concentration of the elements in elder leaf, which falls into ground and will be reused as plant nutrient, might reflect the recycling system of the elements in plants.
