    Notes: We describe the patterning of silicon by exposing a hydrogen-passivated Si(100) surface to Ar(3P0,2) metastable atoms through a fine Ni grid in the presence of a small background pressure of oxygen. Metastable atom impact leads to the formation of a uniform oxide layer that is sufficiently resistant to chemical etching to allow feature depths (approximately-greater-than)20 nm to be realized. With optical manipulation of the incident metastable atoms, this technique could provide the basis for massively parallel nanoscale fabrication on silicon without the use of organic resists. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Nondissociative electron attachment to c-C7F14 and C6F6 is investigated by measuring the velocity distribution of K+ ions formed via electron transfer in collisions with velocity selected K(np) Rydberg atoms and by measuring the decay of the product negative ions during passage to a detector. Collisions with C7F14 lead to the production of free electrons and of long-lived (τ〉100 μs) C7F14−* ions. The free electrons, which result from autodetachment, are all created within a very short time period (τ(approximately-less-than)15 ps) following initial electron capture. Collisions with C6F6 result in the formation of C6F6−* ions that have a broad range of lifetimes against autodetachment. A possible reaction model involving competition between autodetachment and intramolecular vibrational relaxation is discussed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The regulation of whole-plant resource allocation during seed development in Arabidopsis thaliana was investigated by examining growth rate and partitioning of 14CO2 in wild-type plants and those carrying the abi3 mutation. Plants carrying the abi3 mutation partitioned more resources into seed development than the wild type. The extra resources were available as a result of delayed senescence of the cauline leaves in the mutant. After supply of 14CO2 at later stages of reproductive development differences in patterns of 14C distribution between mutant and wild type were consistent with long-term changes in growth and allocation. The role of long-distance signals in the regulation of seed yield in Arabidopsis is discussed.

    Notes: We report the carbon-13 and oxygen-18 isotope ratios in cellulose from the early and late wood of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.). The δ13 C value of the early wood correlates best with that of the late wood of the previous year. The δ18O value of the early wood correlates best with that of the late wood of the same year. We suggest that a biochemical explanation of these data is that there is a rapid cycle between hexose monophosphates and triose phosphates in oak stem tissue during cellulose synthesis. Evidence in support of this explanation is provided by the intramolecular distribution of 14C in labelled fructose extracted from cores of wood that had been supplied with [1−14C]- and [6-14C]glucose.

    Notes: There was an inverse relationship between mycelial growth rate in culture and the numbers of particles of mushroom virus four found by electron microscopy in sporophores submitted for disease diagnosis during 1974–76. Mycelial isolates from sporophores in which few virus particles were detected often showed no decrease in growth rate. Electron microscopy alone is considered to be a satisfactory method of detecting infection by mushroom viruses.

Ultrasound densitometry has been measured in the os calcis of 31 stroke patients (14 women, 17 men), ages 46–87 years, to determine whether bone density is lower than expected for normal subjects at this site, and to investigate whether or not the stroke side has lower values than the nonstroke side. We have also measured a large control group of 268(39 men, 228 women) subjects who showed similar values to other published data. Immobility is a known precursor to bone loss and so we also compared ultrasound Stiffness Index with an index of mobility in 22 of the stroke patients. In healthy subjects, ultrasound densitometry (measured as Stiffness) fell by 25% in females from 48–52 to 68–72 years. Stiffness (expressed as z-score) in patients with stroke was low in females (P 〈 0.02) but not in males, but both stroke side and nonstroke side were equally low. Stiffness did not decline with time since stroke, but did correlate with mobility after stroke, on the stroke (r = 0.73) and nonstroke (r = 0.62) side. The data suggest that stroke patients, particularly females, have low bone density before the stroke event. The greater ultrasound Stiffness with increasing mobility after stroke may suggest that active rehabilitation after stroke may produce denser bone.

    Notes: The purpose of the present study was to determine whether components of silicone breast implants [silicon (polydimethylsiloxane) oil, silicone gel, and octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4)] potentiate the antibody response to bovine serum albumin (BSA) in mice. Seventy A/J mice were divided into seven groups which received the following: group I - phosphate buffer solution (PBS); group II - 20 centistoke (cs) silicone oil; group III - 50% silicone gel homogenized in silicone oil; group IV - incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA); group V - IFA mixed with an equal volume of silicone oil; group VI - D4; and group VII - IFA mixed with an equal volume of DA. Each 0.1 mL of treatment material(s) was mixed or emulsified with an equal 0.1-mL volume of 250 μg/mL BSA in PBS solution. Antibodies to BSA were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay. Our study demonstrates for the first time that both D4 and the silicone gel potentiate antibody production to BSA in mice. Histopathologic evaluation of the injection sites reveals granulomas for mice injected with IFA and D4 preparations. Whether D4 or silicone gel acts as an adjuvant against self-antigens has yet to be determined. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
