Notes: The HLA allogenotypes DRl/Br, DR3 and DR10 (entitled risk HLA markers) have been reported as being genetic markers for the predisposition to experience unexplained recurrent fetal losses. The aim of the study was to determine whether the putative risk HLA markers might also be markers for the risk of pregnancy loss in sisters and wives of brothers of women with unexplained recurrent fetal losses. Information concerning pregnancy outcomes among the relatives of 146 consecutive women with unexplained recurrent fetal losses was collected. Ninety-five of the full sisters, 69 of the full brothers and 50 of the wives of the brothers were HLA typed. Sisters who had experienced at least one previous pregnancy loss (affected women) shared more HLA haplotypes with the proband than unaffected sisters, when the proband was positive for the risk markers (P= 0.02). More affected than unaffected sisters and brothers’ wives were positive for the risk markers (P 〈 0.005 and P 〈 0.03; respectively). The lowest estimate of the odds ratio for experiencing pregnancy loss among sisters and brothers’ wives who were positive compared with those negative for the risk markers was 3.5 (95% credible interval = 1.9-5.8). It is concluded that maternal DRl/Br, DR3 and DR10 allogenotypes seem to be genetic markers for the risk of pregnancy loss among relatives of women with unexplained recurrent fetal losses. The pattern of inheritance suggests a polygenic mode of inheritance with alleles linked to the risk HLA markers interacting with non-HLA linked genes expressed on the fetus or the trophoblast.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the bulk radiation damage accompanying sputtering events sets ultimate limits to the depth resolution attainable in sputter profiling. These limits have been reached in a few cases but most published experimental resolutions are dominated either by instrumental effects or deterioration of depth resolution caused by surface-topography changes. The radiation-damage induced mixing is called “cascade mixing”. Guidelines for selection of projectile species and energies to minimize such mixing are given and numerical estimates for attainable depth resolutions are presented. Finally, the influence of cascade mixing is assessed relative to that of recoil implantation.

Notes: Abstract The transmission sputtering yield of gold for 6.8-MeV Au– bombardment has been measured on targets of thicknesses from 250 to ∼ 7000 Å. The results are compared to Sigmund's theory and to recent calculations of deposited-energy depth distributions by Winterbon. Good agreement between experimental data and theory is found except for target thicknesses around 4000 Å, where the experimental yield rises by up to a factor two higher than predicted by theory. This discrepancy is interpreted in terms of collision spikes, which have been observed previously in backsputtering experiments.

Notes: Summary An investigation of succinate dehydrogenase activity in the wall of rabbit aorta was carried out. The level of succinate dehydrogenase per se in the smooth muscle cells was found to be fairly high, while the mitochondrial level of carrier CoQ was low. The latter may explain the low level or lack of activity of succinate dehydrogenase in these cells as noticed by previous authors. A reliable image of the actual level of succinate dehydrogenase was obtained only by adding CoQ10 to the incubation system. PMS should be avoided, as it induced a “Nothing dehydrogenase” reaction even at low concentrations.

Notes: Abstract Since 1985 measurements of gasses, aerosols, precipitation and throughfall have been carried out at three forest sites in Denmark with equal aged Norway Spruce plantations. The times series show a downward trend in the concentration of sulphur dioxide. Particulate sulphate, ammonia and particulate ammonium and the total nitrate seem to have a more constant concentration level. The wet deposition measurements show a decreasing trend in the content of acid (protons), sulphate, ammonium and nitrate, though for the nitrogen compounds it is only a slight fall. A decrease in concentrations of protons and sulphate is also seen in the throughfall measurements, in throughfall the nitrogen compounds hardly seem to decrease.
