Description: The pollution history of the metals iron, chromium, nickel, cobalt, zinc, lead, copper, cadmium, and mercury in a sediment profile from the German Bight (southeastern part of the North Sea; Förstner & Reineck, 1974) has been re-interpreted according to new radiometric age data from 210Pb and 137Cs concentrations. Between two units of relative uniform sedimentation - approx. 18 mm/y at 7-19 cm sediment depth and approx. 16 mm/y for the core section from 28-50 cm - a major hiatus and an interval of abnormally low sedimentation rate has been detected (19-28 cm) indicating that sediments deposited at the beginning of the century are directly covered by the most recent sediments. Contamination by Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd and Hg has increased since the second half of the last century, probably due to higher metal inputs from both fossil fuel burning and sewage effluents. The more recent increase of iron, chromium, nickel, and cobalt is possibly related to the dumping of acid iron waste from titanium oxide production.

Description: A rapid procedure for Io (Th230) dating of sediments with accumulation rates in the range of several cm/1000 years is described. Studying of large sample populations with very small Io-excess activity is possible as the counting time (around 1500 min/sample) are 2 to 5 times shorter than with the standard Io-excess method. Improved sensitivity of the Io-excess measurement is achieved by: 1) extraction ( ~90 %) of the authigenic Io-excess with EDTA, with minor leaching ( ~30 %) of the allogenic Th232 and Io-supported, 2) processing samples as large as 10 g or more. The procedure was applied to sediments from the Caribbean (V 12-122) and from the Ionian Sea (M22_48 and M17_17). In the case of the standard core V 12-122 our results are in good agreement with previous time-consuming Io determinations. The resulting average accumulation rates of 2.0 ± 0.3 cm/1000 years for the Ionian Sea cores are close to the average derived from magnetic reversal studies of a nearby core.

Description: High-resolution records of the natural radionuclide 230Th were measured in sediments from the eastern Atlantic sector of the Antarctic circumpolar current to obtain a detailed reconstruction of the sedimentation history of this key area for global climate change during the late Quaternary. High-resolution dating rests on the assumption that the 230Thex flux to the sediments is constant. Short periods of drastically increased sediment accumulation rates (up to a factor of 8) were determined in the sediments of the Antarctic zone during the climate optima at the beginning of the Holocene and the isotope stage 5e. By comparing expected and measured accumulation rate of 230Thex, lateral sediment redistribution was quantified and vertical particle rain rates originating from the surface water above were calculated. We show that lateral contributions locally were up to 6.5 times higher than the vertical particle rain rates. At other locations only 15% of the expected vertical particle rain rate were deposited.

Description: Particle reactive elements are scavenged to a higher degree at ocean margins than in the open ocean due to higher fluxes of biogenic and terrigenous particles. In order to determine the influence of these processes on the depositional fluxes of 10Be and barium we have performed high-resolution measurements on sediment core GeoB1008-3 from the Congo Fan. Because the core is dominated by terrigenous matter supplied by the Congo River, it has a high average mass accumulation rate of 6.5 cm/kyr. Biogenic 10Be and Ba concentrations were calculated from total concentrations by subtracting the terrigenous components of10Be and Ba, which are assumed to be proportional to the flux of Al2O3. The mean Ba/Al weight ratio of the terrigenous component was determined to be 0.0045. The unusualy high terrigenous 10Be concentrations of 9.1 * 10**9 atoms/g Al2O3 are either due to input of particles with high10Be content by the Congo River or due to scavenging of oceanic 10Be by riverine particles. The maxima of biogenic 10Be and Ba concentrations coincide with maxima of the paleoproductivity rates. Time series analysis of the 10Be and of Ba concentration profiles reveals a strong dominance of the precessional period of 24 kyr, which also controls the rates of paleoproductivity in this core. During the maxima of productivity the flux of biogenic Ba is enhanced to a larger extent than that of biogenic 10Be. Applying a model for coastal scavenging, we ascribe the observed higher sensitivity of Ba to biogenic particle fluxes to the fact that the ocean residence time of Ba is approximately 10 times longer than that of 10Be.
