    Notes: Abstract While developing a data base for phylogenetic analysis of the New World streptocephalids we compaired them with species from Africa, Europe, and India. In doing this, we found that the morphology of the peduncle of the distal antennal outgrowth and the biramous ovaries developed in seven North American species can contribute to the systematics of the genus. Thus, our investigation consisted of (1) a review of the external morphology of the antenna, (2) biometry of selected parts of the antenna to obtain informative ratios, (3) a review of the presence or absence of genetal linguiform outgrowths, extension of the non-retractile parts of the penes, and general morphology of the cercopods, (4) a study of the location of the ovaries, and extension of the brood-pouch. On the basis of the results we classifyStreptocephalus into nine species groups. Five subgroups are identified within two of the species groups Several implications of the present approach are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract We present an updated diagnosis of 13Streptocephalus species of North America. Three new species are included. A key to the species is provided. The phylogeny of the group is discussed on the basis of (1) a systematic approach (Maeda-Martinezet al., 1995; this volume), which considers the entire distal antennal outgrowth, the frontal appendage, and the morphology of the ovaries as essential in defining different genetic lineages or species-groups, and (2) a cladistic analysis. We suggest that of nine monophyletic groups, three are represented in both the Old and New World. Thus, contrary to former disparsalist hypotheses, we argue that the New World species represent relict forms of ancestral groups fragmented by continental drift (vicariance model).

    Notes: Abstract This paper reports new distribution records of large branchiopods for Mexico following a three year survey of the Baja California peninsula. The occurance of the anostracans Thamnocephalus mexicanus (Linder, 1941) and T. platyurus (Packard, 1877), the notostracan Lepidurus lemmoni (Holmes, 1894), and the spinicaudatans Eulimnadia cylindrova (Belk, 1989) and E. texana (Packard,1871), all represent the first records for the peninsula. An undescribed species of the anostracan genus Streptocephalus is recorded from the state of Baja California (Norte). The occurrence of the notostracan genus Triops and four other anostracan species on the peninsula is also confirmed. The conchostracan Cyclestheria hislopi (Baird, 1859) is recorded from the state of Quintana Roo. The collections of Lepidurus and Cyclestheria are the first records for México. These records increase the number of species of large branchiopods reported fromMéxico to 36: 20 Anostraca, 3 Notostraca, 11 Spinicaudata, and 2Laevicaudata.

    Notes: Summary Automatic thermal desorption (ATD) has been evaluated for the analysis of volatile components from dairy products. It has resulted in a fast and reproducible method which needs only a low amount of sample. Volatile components from milk are collected by off-line purging and trapped on cartridges packed which a suitable adsorbent. Cheese samples are submitted to the same process or directly introduced into the cartridges. The desorption step that follows is carried out automatically and on-line with the chromatographic analysis. Repeatability and sensitivity were satisfactory for both types of products.

    Notes: Summary Thermal desorption is a valuable method for the fractionation of plant volatile components, which can be carried out on-line with GC analysis. The use of coupled GC-MS affords additional qualitative information, of special interest for plant species whose composition has not been previously studied. Some examples of the application of automatic thermal desorption, coupled to GC-MS to the identification and characterization of volatile components of plants of different families are given.

    Notes: Summary Gas-Chromatography (GC) coupled with an electron capture detector (ECD) is the technique which is most used to determine haloacetic acids (HAAs), but when chlorinated waters are analysed, many other compounds can give signals and identification can be difficult. In this paper a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) system for determining these compounds has been used to improve identification. To reach the levels of HAAs specified by regulations a preconcentration step must be applied before chromatographic analysis. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) has been studied in order to improve the detection limits of these compounds in water samples. The use of SPE, prior to GC enabled the haloacetic compounds to be determinated at μg L−1 levels. The performance of the method with different tap water samples and the effect of chlorination in different treatment plants have been evaluated.
