    Notes: We demonstrate the generation and detection of subpicosecond pulses by photoconductive sampling in a three-line coplanar transmission line structure. Due to a mutual inductive coupling between adjacent striplines a differential sampling is obtained. Voltage pulses as short as 390 fs have been measured in a long-lifetime photoconductive switch. We emphasize that differential coupling can be used for the detection as well as the generation of subpicosecond pulses in long-lifetime photoconductors. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The stability of the periodic solution of the two-cell ladder array has been numerically investigated in order to explore intrinsic phase-locking mechanisms relevant to arrays and stacked junction oscillators. In zero magnetic field the periodic in-phase solution of the system is neutrally stable. However, this solution is stable over a finite voltage range when an applied control current exceeds a critical value. The dependence upon system parameters of the boundaries of the stable range and the critical control current is investigated. Finally, the influence of the control current on the microwave power in a typical range of stability is calculated. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract. Conversion of Candida albicans from yeast to mycelial growth is believed to be associated with the organism's virulence. We investigated the role of mammalian hormones in initiating this transformation. Three clinical isolates of Candida albicans were tested for their ability to produce germ tubes under various conditions. Controlled hormonal conditions were provided by stripping rabbit serum with activated charcoal. Steroid compounds under investigation were added back to the stripped serum and yeast were inoculated into the test materials. Microscopic counts of germinated versus ungerminated cells were used as an indicator of morphogenic transformation. The percent of yeast cells germinating was profoundly reduced in stripped compared to unstripped serum. The addition of 1 μM estradiol, cholesterol or testosterone only slightly increased levels of germination above that seen in controls. Estradiol at concentrations 100 times less, however, proved a strong inducer of germination. Cholesterol did not synergize germination when combined with estradiol and the alpha isomer of estradiol had almost no activity as an inducer of morphogenic change in Candida albicans. We conclude that beta estradiol was a morphogenic inducer in three clinical isolates of Candida albicans but only at concentrations typical in vivo.

    Notes: Summary In a collection of Nigerian serum samples typed for alleles of factor B of the alternative complement pathway, a very high frequency of BfF was found (0.69). In addition, a new variant was found in two samples. This variant (F1.29) moved faster than BfF1. It was hemolytically active.

    Notes: Abstract Six extraction methods for the analysis of PCBs (CB-28, CB-52, CB-101, CB-118, CB-138, CB-153 and CB-180) in sewage sludge were tested. A certified reference material (CRM 392) was used for the evaluation of the performance of the methods. Soxhlet-Dean-Starch with toluene as solvent, Soxhlet with hexane:acetone (2:3), cold digestion/saponification with 2 mol/L KOH in methanol followed by partition with hexane, and sonicated liquid-solid extraction with hexane:acetone (1:1) produced accurate results (97%, 93%, 104%, and 88%, respectively) with acceptable precisions (6.2%, 6.8%, 15% and 12%, respectively). Results in close agreement with the certified value for all congeners were obtained by treatment with BF3-methanol prior to partition with dichloromethane. However, this is a tedious procedure and involves the use of hazardous compounds. Cyclic steam distillation produced results with an accuracy of around 80% and a good precision (5.2%). The very low consumption of solvents and other expensive chemicals by this technique and the possibility of analyzing the extract directly without clean-up make it an interesting alternative to the more sophisticated methods. Column elution with dichloromethane was found to be less efficient (61%), but it is a rapid, direct method with a low consumption of solvents and it may therefore serve as screening method.

    Notes: Abstract Cod (Gadus morhua) were exposed to hypercapnia (water Pco2 = 7.5 mmHg), elevated copper level (0.4 ppm) or a combination of both in order to study extra- and intracellular acid-base regulation and the influence hereupon of copper. During pure hypercapnia, the extracellular respiratory acidosis was completely compensated within 12 to 24 h via a chloride-mediated increase in extracellular [HCO3 −]. Exposure to copper in normocapnic seawater caused a large and progressive increase in plasma [Na+] and [Cl−] and a metabolic acidosis. Exposure to copper in hypercapnic seawater was associated with smaller elevations of plasma [Na+] and [Cl−] than in normocapnic seawater, showing that hypercapnia had a protective effect on the copper-induced osmoregulatory disturbances. The compensation of the hypercapnic acidosis was, however, slow and incomplete in fish exposed to both copper and hypercapnia. Extracellular pH remained depressed by 0.3 pH units after 72 h. The data reveal that acid-base regulation was immediately and persistently inhibited by copper. The limited acid-base regulation during combined copper and hypercapnia exposure was chloride-mediated as during hypercapnia alone. Intracellular pH recovery was complete and very rapid in ventricular and skeletal muscle tissues during environmental hypercapnia, whereas acid-base compensation in liver tissue was slower, the kinetics being similar to that in the extracellular compartment. Intracellular pH compensation was significantly slowed down by copper. Copper concentration increased drastically in gill tissue already at 3 h, while copper concentrations in liver, muscle and plasma were significantly elevated only after 48 h, with liver showing the largest elevation.

    Notes: Abstract The Norwegian Monitoring Programme for Long-Range Transported Air Pollutants started in 1980. The biological part of this programme includes besides invertebrate studies in streams, (i) fish community status in lakes by means of interviews, test-fishing in lakes by using standard gill-net series, recruitment studies of brown trout in inland streams, and juvenile stock assess and monitoring of fish kills in salmon rivers. Damaged fish stocks are recognized within a land area of 51,500 km2 in southern Norway and 30 km2 in northern Norway. At least 6,000 lake-dwelling fish stocks have either been lost or are at various stages of reduction. Brown trout (Salmo trutta) is the most widespread and abundant species of fish in Norwegian watersheds, and is also most severe affected by acidification. More recently, there are some indications of an increase in the abundance of brown trout in some areas. However, analysis of age structure in lakes, and fry densities in streams in such areas revealed large annual variations in recruitment rate, which indicates unstable water chemical conditions. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is virtually extinct in 25 rivers in southernmost, southwestern and western Norway.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of ambient calcium, bicarbonate and chloride levels on acid-base regulation was investigated in rainbow trout acclimated and exposed to hypercapnia in five different water types. In soft water (low [Ca++] and [HCO3 −]), compensation of the respiratory acidosis was slow and incomplete within 72h. High ambient [HCO3 −] clearly improved extracellular HCO3 − accumulation, and pH recovery was accomplished within 24h. This may result from stimulation of branchial HCO3 − (influx)/Cl− (outflux) exchange. Elevation of ambient [Cl−] had a small, positive effect on pH compensation. High ambient [Ca++] improved the degree of pH compensation. Plasma [HCO3 −] and [Cl−] showed an inverse 1:1 relationship in all acclimation groups, revealing an ubiquitous chloride-mediated acid-base regulation. Ventilation activity was increased by hypercapnia and only returned to control values in hard water (high [HCO3 −]and [Ca++]). During progressive hypercapnia (up to 3% CO2), hard water acclimated fish obtained significantly higher plasma [HC03 −] (51.2 mM) than fish acclimated to low [Ca++]/high [HCO3 −] (44.7 mM). This suggests an additive effect of ambient Ca++ on plasma HCO3 − accumulation. At levels of CO2 above 1%, some mortality was induced in low [Ca++]/high [HCO3 −] water. Dying fish could be distinguished from surviving fish by an excessive Cl−loss and increasing extracellular anion gap.
