    Description: A macroscopic Lagrangian is simplified to the adiabatic limit and expanded about equilibrium, to third order in perturbation, for three illustrative cases: one-dimensional compression parallel to the static magnetic field, two-dimensional compression perpendicular to the static magnetic field, and three-dimensional compression. As examples of the averaged-Lagrangian method applied to nonlinear wave interactions, coupling coefficients are derived for interactions between two electron plasma waves and an ion acoustic wave, and between an ordinary wave, an electron plasma wave, and an ion acoustic wave.

    Description: The possibility is investigated that the decay of massive cosmological neutrinos may have produced a spectral signature which has already been detected in observations of the ultraviolet background radiation. Various implications are discussed including a possible implied neutrino mass of 13.8-14.8 eV. A lower limit is also placed on the lifetime of heavy neutrinos with respect to decay into light neutrinos and gamma rays based on the cosmic UV observations.

    Description: Non-linear rectification of the RF electric fields excited in a convectively amplifying electron beam-plasma interaction results in a dc electric field, and a corresponding ponderomotive force acting on the charged particles to produce a space-charge separation, i.e. a type of plasma double-layer. This paper analyses the effect, taking into account plasma electron temperature and electron-neutral collisions. To measure such double-layers, an electron beam probe constitutes a convenient non-perturbing diagnostic technique, but great care is required in its calibration. An analysis is presented taking into account significant non-linear effects which had been neglected in previous work. The paper concludes with some preliminary experimental results illustrating the use of the technique in a beam-plasma interaction for which a weak double-layer electric field is predicted.

    Description: The presence of an excess of low-energy antiprotons in the primary cosmic radiation has given rise to several possible explanations, some of which involve exotic processes such as mini-black holes and extragalactic antiparticles. The latter possibility is considered, and it is shown that there are interesting implications for the cosmic radiation at higher energies. Indeed, it may be possible to account for a previously puzzling feature of the cosmic ray spectrum (a 'bump' in the range between 10 to the 14th and 10 to the 15th eV) by hypothesizing a primary extragalactic origin for the bulk of the observed cosmic ray antiprotons, although such an explanation is not unique. In this model, most of the cosmic rays above 10 to the 15th eV are extragalactic. A method of testing this hypothesis experimentally is described.

    Description: Pulse propagation in plasmas has been widely studied in relation to instabilities and their classification as convective or absolute. Such analyses emphasize the importance of considering the summation of a spectrum of modes, rather than simply making deductions from Brillouin dispersion relations plotted either for real frequency and complex wavenumber, or for complex frequency and real wavenumber. In particular, erroneous conclusions may be drawn about the magnitude and direction of propagation of a transient pulse. In this paper, the point of view is taken that an observer remote from the source would measure an 'observational dispersion relation'. The nature of this dispersion relation is examined for absorbing or convectively unstable plasmas by asymptotic analysis, and for different source waveforms. Illustrative results are presented for propagation in cold plasmas and for beam-plasma interaction.

    Description: The scattered signal excited by nonlinear mixing of two plane waves normally incident on an infinitely long column of plasma is investigated. A general solution is obtained for the polarization in which the electric field vectors of the waves are perpendicular to the column axis and the column is assumed to be radically inhomogeneous. This general theory is then applied to the special cases of the inhomogeneous column in the long-wavelength limit, and the homogeneous column both for the general case and in the long-wavelength limit. It is determined that dipole and quadrupole components should predominate in the polar radiation pattern for the long-wavelength case. The special case of second harmonic generation due to a single incident wave is analyzed in detail. Nonlinear scattering coefficients are computed, and the corresponding polar radiation patterns are determined. The findings of this study are employed to evaluate the feasibility of observing nonlinear scattering from meteor trails.

    Description: Langmuir probe measurements have been carried out which confirm the occurrence of double-layers in an argon positive column. Pulsing the discharge current permitted probe measurements to be performed in the presence of the double-layer. Supplementary evidence, obtained from dc and pulsed discharges, indicated that the double-layers formed in the two modes of operation were similar. The double-layers observed were weak and stable; their relation to other classes of double-layers is discussed, and directions for future work are suggested.

    Description: The space-charge double layer forming between two plasmas with different densities and thermal energies is described. The double layer is analyzed using fluid theory. The case of cold particles is treated. Thermal effects for the reflected particles and for the transmitted particles are considered. Emphasis is placed on finding a relationship between the magnitude of the potential step and the parameters characterizing the adjoining plasmas. Qualitative statements are made about the length of the double layer, and a characteristic length useful as a quantitative measure is defined and discussed.

    Description: The ionization balance in diffusion-dominated discharges may depend on both one- and two-step ionization processes. The Spenke diffusion equation describing such conditions is solved in this paper by the Rayleigh-Ritz variational method. Simple analytic approximations to the density profile, and the similarity relation between the equation parameter, and the discharge dimensions, are derived for planar and cylindrical geometry and compared with exact computations for certain limiting cases.
