    Notes: Perhaps no other foreign policy area brought forth the emotional anti communism characteristic of the 1950s as did American relations with the People's Republic of China. The so–called “ loss of China ”issue beginning in 1949, for which the Republicans primarily blamed the Democrats, severely strained the bipartisan approach towards foreign policy. In addition, four years before he died in 1951, Republican foreign policy leader Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg excluded China policy from the area of bipartisan agreement, while his party's loyalty to the defeated Nationalists remained strong. Senator Joseph McCarthy's“communists–in– government” charges during the Korean War, when American forces were engaged in combat with the People's Liberation Army, further exacerbated relations between the Republican and Democratic parties, and between the legislative and executive branches of government. Ominously, the possibility of a preventive strike on the China mainland also became the focus of serious consideration and possible implementation during the Formosa Strait confrontation of 1954–55.

    Description: This is a study of the interactions of solitary waves climbing up a circular island. A series of large-scale laboratory experiments with waves of different incident height-to-depth ratios and different crest lengths is described. Detailed two-dimensional run-up height measurements and time histories of surface elevations around the island are presented. A numerical model based on the two-dimensional shallow-water wave equations including runup calculations was developed. Numerical model predictions agreed very well with the laboratory data and the model was used to study wave trapping and the effect of slope. Under certain conditions, enhanced runup and wave trapping on the lee side of the island were observed, suggesting a possible explanation for the devastation reported by field surveys in Babi Island off Flores, Indonesia, and in Okushiri Island, Japan. © 1995, Cambridge University Press.     Description: Direct numerical simulation is used to examine turbulent mixing in a shear-free stably stratified fluid. Energy is continuously supplied to a small region to maintain a well-developed kinetic energy profile, as in an oscillating grid flow (Briggs et al. 1996; Hopfinger & Toly 1976; Nokes 1988). A microscale Reynolds number of 60 is maintained in the source region. The turbulence forms a well-mixed layer which diffuses from the source into the quiescent fluid below. Turbulence transport at the interface causes the mixed layer to grow under weakly stratified conditions. When the stratification is strong, large-scale turbulent transport is inactive and pressure transport becomes the principal mechanism for the growth of the turbulence layer. Down-gradient buoyancy flux is present in the large scales; however, far from the source, weak counter-gradient fluxes appear in the medium to small scales. The production of internal waves and counter-gradient fluxes rapidly reduces the mixing when the turbulent Froude number is lower than unity. When the stratification is weak, the turbulence is strong enough to break up the density interface and transport fluid parcels of different density over large vertical distances. As the stratification intensifies, turbulent eddies flatten against the interface creating anisotropy and internal waves. The dominant entrainment mechanism is then scouring. Mixing efficiency, defined as the ratio of buoyancy flux to available kinetic energy, exhibits a similar dependence on Froude number to other stratified flows (Holt et al. 1992; Lienhard & Van Atta 1990). However, using the anisotropy of the turbulence to define an alternative mixing efficiency and Froude number improves the correlation and allows local scaling.

    Description: Results from a direct numerical simulation of a shear-free turbulent mixing layer are presented. The mixing mechanisms associated with the turbulence are isolated. In the first set of simulations, the turbulent mixing layer decays as energy is exchanged between the layers. Energy spectra with E(κ) ≃ κ2 and E(κ) ∼ κ4 dependence at low wavenumber are used to initialize the flow to investigate the effect of initial conditions. The intermittency of the mixing layer is quantified by the skewness and kurtosis of the velocity fields: results compare well with the shearless mixing layer experiments of Veeravalli & Warhaft (1989). Eddies of size of the integral scale (k3/2/∈) penetrate the mixing layer intermittently, transporting energy and causing the layer to grow. The turbulence in the mixing layer can be characterized by eddies with relatively large vertical kinetic energy and vertical length scale. In the second set of simulations, a forced mixing layer is created by continuously supplying energy in a local region to maintain a stationary kinetic energy profile. Assuming the spatial decay of r.m.s. velocity is of the form u ∝ yn, predictions of common two-equation turbulence models yield values of n ranging from -1.25 to -2.5. An exponent of -1.35 is calculated from the forced mixing layer simulation. In comparison, oscillating grid experiments yield decay exponents between n = -1 (Hannoun et al. 1989) and n = -1.5 (Nokes 1988). Reynolds numbers of 40 and 58, based on Taylor microscale, are obtained in the decaying and forced simulations, respectively. Components of the turbulence models proposed by Mellor & Yamada (1986) and Hanjalić & Launder (1972) are analysed. Although the isotropic models underpredict the turbulence transport, more complicated anisotropic models do not represent a significant improvement. Models for the pressure-strain tensor, based on the anisotropy tensor, performed adequately.

    Description: SUMMARYExperiments started in 1976, 1977 and 1978 on Clay-with-Flints soil at Rothamsted tested the effects of combinations of eight two-level factors on spring-sown field beans. Factors tested, presence v. absence, were irrigation, nitrogen fertilizer, aldicarb, fonofos (dieldrin in 1976), benomyl to the seed bed, permethrin (fenitrothion in 1976), pirimicarb, benomyl foliar spray (not tested in 1976).The main pests and diseases present were nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus, the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum, the pea and bean weevil Sitona lineatus, root blackening associated with the fungal genera Pythium and Fusarium, the foliar diseases chocolate spot, Botrytis spp., rust, Uromyces fabae and bean leaf roll virus.Incidence of these pests and diseases varied between years. Controlling those present increased yield by about 0·7 t grain/ha each year. The difficulty of apportioning this increase to particular pests and diseases is discussed.Irrigation increased total dry-matter production and grain yield in 1976 and 1978 but only total dry-matter production in 1977, when grain yield was lost because of lodging. Nitrogen fertilizer had little or no effect.The most favourable combinations of treatments gave yields of 3·4, 5·0 and 6·4 t grain/ha in the 3 years respectively. Small yields in 1976, despite irrigation, were attributed to premature senescence caused by exceptionally high temperatures. It is suggested that with good control of pests and diseases yields of at least 5 t/ha should be attainable on Clay-with-Flints soil without irrigation in years of average temperature and rainfall and yields in excess of 6 t/ha when the soil-moisture deficit is lessened by either above-average rainfall or irrigation.Treatments applied to the beans had little or no effect on two following crops of winter wheat.

    Description: The energy expenditure of ten (five male, five female) wandering albatrosses (Diomedea exulans Linnaeus 1758) brooding chicks on Bird Island, South Georgia, was measured using doubly-labelled water. At-sea foraging behaviour was measured in the same individuals using satellite telemetry and leg-mounted activity recorders. Mean mass-specific daily energy expenditure was 341 kJ kg−1 day−1 during a mean of 4.12 days at sea and did not differ between the sexes. This is significantly lower than previously reported for the species and the lowest recorded for any albatross. There were no significant relationships between energy expenditure and the proportion of time spent flying (59.7%), distance flown (1448 km) or average speed (16.5 km h−1) suggesting that flying is not the most energetically expensive activity during foraging trips.

    Description: The environmental setting and taphonomy of the insect fauna of the Insect Bed, Bembridge Marls (late Eocene; 36 Ma) of the Isle of Wight is described. Cluster analysis of taxonomic data on the insect fauna of a diversity of modern tropical environments, together with that of the Bembridge Marls, shows that the insects of the latter are characteristic of a primary sub-tropical/tropical forest subject to significant seasonal rainfall. A similar approach indicates that the sample of taxa preserved in the Insect Bed is biased toward insects from leaf litter and lower herbage microhabitats. External ornamentation of the cuticle is preserved on a micron scale, and the individual microfibrils of the procuticle can be distinguished. The insects of the Bembridge Marls are remarkable in preserving cuticle and mineralized internal tissues in a largely uncompacted state. Chemical analysis (py-GC/MS) reveals that the cuticle is composed of an aliphatic polymer, possibly due to polymerization of cuticular waxes during diagenesis. No chitin was detected. The soft tissues, which include sarcolemma and muscle fibres, are preserved through replacement in calcite.
