    Notes: Our objectives were to evaluate the use of microcatchments in the establishment of Leucaena retusa (little-leaf leadtree) and Atriplex canescens (four-wing saltbush) and their role in the initiation of autogenic landscape restoration processes on a shallow semiarid site. Three six-month-old seedlings of either Leucaena retusa or Atriplex canescens were planted in 1.5-m2 microcatchments. An equal number of seedlings was planted in control plots (unmodified soil surface). The water collection effects on shrub survival, standing biomass, and the natural immigration of herbaceous vegetation were determined over 42 months. Planting in microcatchment basins doubled Leucaena seedling survival and resulted in a five-fold increase in standing biomass, compared to the control, during the first growing season. There was a significant increase in soil organic matter in the microcatchment basins within 32 months. At the same time, microcatchments planted with Atriplex canescens seedlings had a ten-fold increase in seedling standing biomass compared to the control. Forty-two months after transplanting, the herbaceous standing crop was significantly greater near Atriplex canescens or in microcatchment basins than in plots with unmodified surface soil. Basins containing Atriplex produced significantly more herbaceous vegetation than basins containing Leucaena, and empty basins produced the least herbaceous vegetation of three basin treatments. These data suggest that landscape-scale procedures that concentrate scarce resources (water, organic matter, nutrients, and propagules), establish keystone species, and ameliorate microenvironmental conditions can initiate autogenic restoration of degraded semiarid ecosystems.

    Notes: We use the analytic hierarchy process to analyze the role of subjective factors in decision making as illustrated in the Iran rescue operation. Essentially, we show that a decision maker and that decision maker's advisors may differ in their estimates on whether an action should or should not be taken depending on what intangible factors the leader holds as personally important, factors that the others would not necessarily include in their thinking-a serious point for which we provide a particularly effective methodology.

    Notes: SUMMARY. 〈list xml:id="l1" style="custom"〉1The microbial heterotrophic utilization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) was determined experimentally in microcosms using stream water and stream-bed sediments from a third order reach of White Clay Creek (Pennsylvania, U.S.A.).2Sources of DOM for the experiments included White Clay Creek water at baseflow and stormflow and cold water extracts of jewel weed (Impatiens capensis L.) and spicebush (Linderu henzoin (L.) Blume).3The heterotrophic activity of the sediments was measured as uptake of the following: dissolved organic carbon (DOC), molecular weight fractions within the DOC pool, carbohydrates, amino acids and peptides, phenolics, and dissolved oxygen (DO), all in the overlying water.4Concentrations of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and direct microscopic counts of bacteria were used to estimate bacterial biomass in the surface sediments.5The microcosm experiments showed that specific DOC molecular size classes and DOM functional groups were selectively removed from solution, exposure to one DOM source affected responses to a different DOM source and certain DOM sources were more readily utilized than others.6Continued exposure to a DOM source increased microbial heterotrophic activity (a condition which persisted even after removal of the DOM source for several days).7Rates of biotic DOC uptake ranged from 3.6 to 242.8 mg Cm-2h-1.8Indirect estimates of biosynthesis calculated from DOC and DO data ranged from 1.6 at baseflow and 2.6–61.2 at stormflow to as high as 192.6 mg C m-2 h-1 when the community was repeatedly exposed to enriched DOM sources.9The mean generation times of bacteria in sediments, determined from direct microscopy data, ranged from 12.5 to 46.2 h at 15°C.

    Notes: We developed an automated method for studying the germination kinetics of Bacillus subtilis spores using a microtiter plate (MP) reader. Phosphate buffer supplemented with L-alanine was used to isolate the germination phase as determined by decrease in optical density (OD630). Using a standard 96-well MP, L-alanine triggered germination kinetics were measured by automatic OD measurement every 3 min until the maximum OD630 change (OD630) was determined. When OD630 values were plotted against L-alanine concentration on a double reciprocal plot, a straight line (R2= 0.98) was produced. The addition of D-alanine to the medium demonstrated classical competitive inhibition on double reciprocal plots. A 3-dimensional representation of the untransformed data showed the response surface nature of competitive inhibition. The method automates the tedious task of determining loss of refractility associated with spore germination under defined conditions so that inhibitors to germination can be studied. Since 96 OD630 determinations can be done simultaneously in small volumes (200 μL) extensive data can be generated about inhibitors using relatively small spore crops in a single, short (1.4 h) incubation.

    Notes: Subsidence profiles across 29 oil and gas fields in the 12,200-km2 Houston, Texas, regional subsidence area, which is caused by decline of ground-water level, suggest that the contribution of petroleum withdrawal to local land subsidence is small. Despite large volumes of petroleum production, subsidence at most fields was not increased by oil and gas withdrawal. Local increases of subsidence were detected at only six fields—Alco-Mag, Chocolate Bayou, Goose Creek, Hastings, Mykawa, and South Houston. With the exception of the 1-m subsidence from 1917 to 1925 at Goose Creek, differential subsidence across oil and gas fields was smaller by a factor of two or more than subsidence caused by aquifer compaction. At four fields—Barbers Hill, Cedar Bayou, Humble, and Pierce Junction—subsidence was substantially less than in the surrounding area. Except for Cedar Bayou, these fields are associated with shallow salt domes that partly occupy the aquifer system; for the three fields, subsidence during the periods of record came to less than half the subsidence in the surrounding area.In addition to land subsidence, faults with an aggregate length of more than 240 km (150 mi) have offset the land surface in historical time. Natural geologic deformation, ground-water pumping, and petroleum withdrawal have all been considered as potential causes of the historical offset across these faults. The minor amount of localized land subsidence associated with oil and gas fields, however, suggests that petroleum withdrawal is not a major cause of the historical faulting, at least by a differential compaction mechanism.
