    Notes: The transport self-field ac loss voltages of (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox (Bi-2223) multifilamentary tapes depend strongly on the voltage lead configuration. We have measured the loss voltage as a function of the measuring circuit loop size defined by the voltage leads and the tapes for well-defined lead geometries. The loss signal was found to reach a limiting value when the length of the loop transverse to the tape was several times the tape width. This limiting voltage represents the "true'' self-field ac loss as predicted by new theoretical analysis. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: SummaryThick subaerial volcanic sequences of probable mid Triassic age rest unconformably on Permo-Carboniferous limestones in the ‘Phyllite Series’ within the Gavrovo-Tripolitsa zone of the external Hellenide nappes. The volcanic rocks are varied in character. Pyroclastic rocks (often reddened) predominate, but minor basalt or andesite and rhyolitic hypabyssal intrusions and flows are also found. The rocks have experienced low-grade metamorphism and the only relict primary minerals are pyroxene and rare plagioclase in basic rocks and potash feldspar in acid rocks. The most important metamorphic phases are albite, chlorite, potassium mica, epidote, hematite, quartz and pumpellyite. Twenty-seven whole-rock major-element analyses suggest that there has been some exchange of Na2O and K2O for CaO during metamorphism, but that other elements have been relatively stable. A genetic interpretation of the rocks is attempted using published geochemical discriminator diagrams. The basic rocks are tholeiitic in major element chemistry and pyroxene composition. Trace element (Hf, Ta, Th, Ce, Yb) distribution suggests magma generation at a destructive plate margin.

    Description: Latest Devonian A-type granite-gabbro plutons, in part ductilely deformed, are spatially associated with the strike-slip Cobequid fault zone. The youngest intrusions are close to the Cobequid fault zone, which was the main conduit for magma. Two phases of deformation accompanying magma emplacement are recognized. Early magmas intruded ductile rocks during left-lateral oblique thrust movements. A second stage of right-lateral oblique slip normal faulting accommodated uplift of the plutons when coarse granite was emplaced in the crestal regions. Cross-cutting late stage porphyries, granitic clasts in marginal basins cut by granitic dykes, and superposition of brittle on ductile structures all indicate rapid uplift of the plutons. The geometry of the Cobequid fault zone shows that pluton emplacement was not the result of extension in releasing bends during transcurrent shear. Rather, flower-structure high-angle faults acted as magma conduits and space was created by two processes: translation of wall rocks along thrust faults at depth, developing space away from the master fault zone and backward collapse of the uplifted magma chamber creating space towards the fault zone.

    Description: The widespread Triassic volcanic rocks of Greece, dismembered during the Hellenide orogeny, are used to interpret the nature of Triassic rifting. Four assemblages of volcanic rocks are distinguished on geochemical criteria: (1) a predominant subalkaline basalt–andesite–dacite series with a high proportion of pyroclastic rocks; (2) minor shoshonites; (3) alkali basalt and (4) MORB. The stratigraphic and palaeogeographic distribution of these rock types is synthesized. New Pb and Nd isotopic data are used to discriminate between hypotheses suggesting that either subduction or extension was responsible for the Triassic volcanism. In the subalkaline basalt assemblage, εNd is negative with depleted mantle model ages 〉1.5 Ga. Pb isotopic compositions are mostly close to the very distinctive compositional field of Cenozoic extensional rocks of the Aegean area, with very high 207Pb/204Pb for relatively low 206Pb/204Pb ratios. These isotopic data confirm interpretations based on trace elements that subalkaline basalts were predominantly derived from melt-depleted peridotite in the sub-continental lithospheric mantle as a result of extension. Small areas of enriched hydrous mantle partially melted to yield shoshonitic magmas. Nd and Pb isotopic compositions of the alkali basalts are quite different from those in other rock types and suggest a HIMU mantle source component derived from a small plume, which also influenced MORB compositions. Distribution of these various rock types is used to constrain palaeogeographic reconstruction of Triassic micro-continental blocks.

    Description: Minor Pliocene dacites from Crommyonia mark the western end of the South Aegean volcanic arc. They form small lava domes and flows generally associated with extensional faults. An older group (3.6–4 Ma) occurs in the west and a younger group (2.3–2.8 Ma) in the east. Volcanic rocks of similar age are found at Aegina, Poros and Milos in the western part of the South Aegean arc, whereas volcanism in the eastern part of the arc is of Quaternary age. The two groups of rocks at Crommyonia are chemically distinct. Both groups contain multiple generations of plagioclase. Both have εNd (−8.0 to −10.6) that is much more negative than any other rocks in the South Aegean arc and model ages that are similar to those for many Miocene extensional granites of the Cyclades. The model ages are interpreted to reflect a mid-Proterozoic mantle event recognized elsewhere in the Hellenides. The Crommyonia dacitic magmas represent the first stages of melting of deep lithosphere as a result of both subduction-related hydrous fluids and extensional decompression. Plagioclase compositions suggest important magma evolution in a base-of-crust magma chamber, where the strong crustal Nd isotope signature was acquired. With time, asthenospheric sources that upwelled as a result of extension played an increasingly important role in determining the isotopic characteristics of the arc volcanism.
