    Notes: Abstract. An effective fertilizer recommendation system requires information on seasonal, soil-related and cultural variations in soil mineral nitrogen (N) and nutrient requirements of the crop. This can be provided by dynamic N turnover models, such as listed by Plentinger & Penning De Vries (1996). In this paper, we describe a survey of farmer opinion designed to ascertain what farmers want from such a decision support system. Over 100 farmers were surveyed. Surveyed farmers requested that default values be available for all model inputs. Inputs should be entered both by windows-based menu (for clarity) and tabular format (for speed), have user-selected units, and be fully supported by context-sensitive help. The system should have a hierarchical structure allowing access to fixed parameters, and be compatible with commonly used farm recording packages. Recommendations should be provided both for the field (single and optional application rates), and in tabular format across the whole farm. Simulations should be easily rerun using more recent crop and weather data. Turnover processes underlying recommendations should be illustrated by flow diagrams of flux between pools, pie charts of fertilizer fate, bar charts of movement down the soil profile and graphical plots of changes in N status against time.

    Notes: The behaviour of wild underyearling rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss in concealment habitat in a laboratory stream aquarium at 2 and 6°C was recorded daily with an infrared video camera for 90 min over dawn. Aggressive behaviours (threat nips, nips and chases) were frequent during this time as fish entered concealment habitat. Aggressiveness varied widely among fish groups, with a range of 1 to 45 aggressive acts being initiated during a 90-min filming period. Larger fish initiated most of the encounters and removed a higher proportion of fish from concealment than did smaller aggressors. Thirteen per cent of the aggressive acts resulted in the recipient being completely removed from concealment habitat. The highest combined frequency of aggressive acts was 0.64 per visible fish per 10 min period and occurred at relatively low light levels (300 lx). The data suggest that when fish density is high, such as when habitat is limited, aggressive behaviour in winter may cause some underyearling salmonids to be excluded from concealment.

    Notes: Potato tubers of five cultivais were incubated at five temperatures between 2 and 20°C for 1 month and then inoculated with Phoma exigua var. foveata and stored at 5°C. Larger rots usually developed on tubers previously incubated at the higher temperatures but cultivar differences were greatest where tubers had been incubated at 2°C. In another experiment, rot size was related to the duration of incubation at 20°C before inoculation.In a series of experiments, tubers were stored at different temperatures after inoculation; other factors (e.g. wound type or r.h.) were also investigated in some of these. Combining the results of all experiments a linear decrease of % wounds infected (logit transformation) with storage temperature was demonstrated. The size of rots was not simply related to temperature, but tended to increase over the range 2–10°C and then stabilized or declined at higher temperatures. Relative humidity treatments of 75% v. 95% did not consistently affect either the incidence of rotting or rot size. The other factors investigated did not usually interact significantly with temperature.The relevance of the results for resistance testing is discussed and a simple equation relating disease incidence to inoculum levels, type of damage and temperature is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract. Krugman states that “Regional science is not a unified subject. It is best described as a collection of tools.” Unfortunately such a perspective fails to fully acknowledge theoretical dimensions of the accompanying refocusing on geographic expressions of economic linkages, such as those highlighted in spatial externalities specifications. Such promulgated aspects of the spatial economic landscape relate to map pattern, and certainly the spatial statistics and spatial econometrics theory that accompanies it, as well as the underlying substantive theory garnered from a variety of sources. The principal implication is other than “loose-jointed, do-the-best-you-can theorizing”.

    Notes: Six antifreeze proteins, which have the unique ability to adsorb onto the surface of ice and inhibit its growth, have been isolated from the apoplast of winter rye leaves where ice forms at subzero temperatures. The rye antifreeze proteins accumulate during cold acclimation and are similar to plant pathogenesis-related proteins, including two endoglucanase-like, two chitinase-like and two thaumatin-like proteins. Immunolocalization of the glucanase-like antifreeze proteins showed that they accumulate in mesophyll cell walls facing intercellular spaces, in pectinaceous regions between adjoining mestome sheath cells, in the secondary cell walls of xylem vessels and in epidermal cell walls. Because the rye antifreeze proteins are located in areas where they could be in contact with ice, they may function as a barrier to the propagation of ice or to inhibit the recrystallization of ice. Antifreeze proteins similar to pathogenesis-related proteins were also found to accumulate in closely-related plants within the Triticum group but not in freezing-tolerant dicotyledonous plants. In winter wheat, the accumulation of antifreeze proteins and the development of freezing tolerance are regulated by chromosome 5. Rye antifreeze proteins may have evolved from pathogenesis-related proteins, but they retain their catalytic activities and may play a dual role in increasing both freezing and disease resistance in overwintering plants.

    Notes: Freezing-tolerant plants withstand extracellular ice formation at subzero temperatures. Previous studies have shown that winter rye (Secale cereale L.) accumulates proteins in the leaf apoplast during cold acclimation that have antifreeze properties and are similar to pathogenesis-related proteins. To determine whether the accumulation of these antifreeze proteins is common among herbaceous plants, we assayed antifreeze activity and total protein content in leaf apoplastic extracts from a number of species grown at low temperature, including both monocotyledons (winter and spring rye, winter and spring wheat, winter barley, spring oats, maize) and dicotyledons (spinach, winter and spring oilseed rape [canola], kale, tobacco). Apoplastic polypeptides were also separated by SDS-PAGE and immunoblotted to determine whether plants generally respond to low temperature by accumulating pathogenesis-related proteins. Our results showed that significant levels of antifreeze activity were present only in the apoplast of freezing-tolerant monocotyledons after cold acclimation at 5/20C. Moreover, only a closely related group of plants, rye, wheat and barley, accumulated antifreeze proteins similar to pathogenesis-related proteins during cold acclimation. The results indicate that the accumulation of antifreeze proteins is a specific response that may be important in the freezing tolerance of some plants, rather than a general response of all plants to low temperature stress.
