    Description: Flame spread over flat solid fuel beds is a useful paradigm for studying the behavior of more complex two-phase nonpremixed flames. For practical applications, two of the most important elements of flame spreading are the effects of (1) the ambient atmosphere (e.g. pressure and composition) and (2) the flow environment on the spread rate and extinction conditions. Concerning (1), studies of flame spread in vitiated air and non-standard atmospheres such as those found in undersea vessels and spacecraft are particularly important for the assessment of fire hazards in these environments as well as determination of the effectiveness of fire suppressants. Concerning (2), the flow environment may vary widely even when no forced flow is present because of buoyancy effects. Consequently, the goal of this work is to employ microgravity (micro g) experiments to extend previous studies of the effects of ambient atmosphere and the flow environment on flame spread through the use of microgravity (micro g) experiments. Because of the considerable differences between upward (concurrent-flow) and downward (opposed-flow) flame spread at 1g (Williams, 1976, Fernandez-Pello, 1984), in this work both upward and downward 1g spread are tested. Two types of changes to the oxidizing atmosphere are considered in this work. One is the addition of sub-flammability-limit concentrations of a gaseous fuel ('partially premixed' atmospheres). This is of interest because in fires in enclosures, combustion may occur under poorly ventilated conditions, so that oxygen is partially depleted from the air and is replaced by combustible gases such as fuel vapors, H2 or CO. Subsequent fire spread over the solid fuel could occur under conditions of varying oxygen and gaseous fuel content. The potential significance of flame spread under vitiated or partially premixed conditions has been noted previously (Beyler, 1984). The second change is the diluent type, which affects the radiative properties of the mixture as well as the Lewis number (Le) of the reactants in the atmosphere, which for oxygen is defined as the thermal diffusivity of the bulk mixture divided by the mass diffusivity of oxygen into the bulk mixture. Understanding the effect of diluent type is desirable because in some undersea and spaceborne habitations, it is desirable to use diluent gases other than nitrogen. Prior experiments have shown that both radiation (Bhattacharjee and Altenkirch, 1993) and Lewis number (Zhang et al, 1992) effects are important in flame spreading problems.

    Description: A newly developed mass-spectrometry technique employing a tandem Van de Graaff accelerator together with a special beam-transport system and heavy-ion detector has been used to determine the half-life of Si-32. The result obtained, 108 plus or minus 18 yr, disagrees with the accepted value of 330 plus or minus 40 yr. The implications of the new half-life of Si-32, which is used for dating studies, are discussed.

    Description: Xe-129 - Xe-128 and Ar-40 - Ar-39 analyses has been performed on two Antarctic enstatite meteorites, the chondrite Y-691 and the aubrite (enstatite achondrite) ALH-78113. Both meteorites have complex Ar-40 - Ar-39 release patterns to which no unambiguous age assignment is possible. Both give apparently satisfactory Xe-129 - Xe-128 correlations corresponding to unusual ages. The I-Xe age of the chondrite Y-691 is 16 Ma after Bjurbole, not unusual for chondrites in general but 10 Ma later than previously known ages for enstatite chondrites. The I-Xe age of the aubrite ALH-78113 is 210 Ma after Bjurbole, the latest age (rather than a limit) so far observed by the I-Xe technique, but this age assignment must be considered tentative because of the possibility that it is significantly influenced by terrestrial I contamination.

    Description: A novel trapped gas analysis protocol is applied to five shales in which the samples are sealed in air to eliminate the possibility of gas loss in the preanalysis laboratory vacuum exposure of a conventional protocol. The test is aimed at a determination concerning the hypothesis that atmospheric noble gases occur in the same proportion as planetary gases in meteorites, and that the factor-of-23 deficiency of air Xe relative to planetary Xe is made up by Xe stored in shales or other sedimentary rocks. The results obtained do not support the shale hypothesis.

    Description: Precise measurements of the half-life of I-129 in three different meteorites and one lunar surface rock are reported. The meteorite source of I-129 was produced by cosmic ray secondary neutron reactions on Te, while the source in lunar materials in spallation on barium and rare earth elements. The Abee, Allende, and Dhajala meteorites were examined, together with the lunar rock 14310. Details of the process used to extract the iodine are provided. The Abee and Allende samples exhibited a production of 0.5 atom/min per gm of Te from the (n,2n) reaction and 0.05 atom/min/gm for the (n,gamma) reaction. The I-129 is concluded to be a viable tool for long-lived cosmogenic nuclide studies. Further work to extend the data to include the constancy of the cosmic ray flux, the meteorite bombardment history, and the cosmic exposure age dating by means of the I-129 and Xe-129 method is indicated.

    Description: It is hypothesized that adsorption is not likely to provide a sufficiently precise mechanism for the concentration of excess fission Xe in the entire lunar regolith, in view of laboratory analogs of the lunar soil and calculations of the residence times of noble gases in the present day regolith. Lunar cold trap and episodic degassing models are difficult to reconcile, however, with the generality of excess fission Xe in all gas-rich highland breccias. It is concluded that the high Xe concentration in such highland breccias is not the result of Xe adsorption prior to the trapping of this component.

    Description: With support from a previous NASA grant, NAG3-161 1, the PI studied the effects of diluent type, the addition of sub-flammability-limit concentrations of combustible gases, and the effects of concurrent buoyant flow on flame spread processes. The results of these studies are reported and directions for the current grant outlined. Most experiments were conducted in a 20 liter combustion chamber. Exactly the same apparatus was used for 1 g and microgravity tests. The effect of inert gases He, Ar, N2, CO2 and SF6 on flame spread were tested since they provide a variety of radiative properties and oxygen Lewis numbers. CO and CH4 were used for the gaseous fuels in partially-premixed atmosphere tests, plus H2, C3H8 and NH3 for 1 g tests only. In most experiments 5 cm wide Kimwipe samples 15 cm long were used and were held by aluminum quenching plates. The samples were ignited by an electrically-heated Kanthal wire. The flame spread process was imaged via three video cameras and a laser shearing interferometer.

    Description: The relationship between the three dimensional properties of the fundamental flow of a plane Poieseuille flow and subcritical stability was studied. An S-T wave was introduced into the flow and the three dimensional development of the wave observed. Results indicate that: (1) the T-S wave has three dimensional properties which are synchronous with the fundamental flow, but there is damping at microamplitude; (2) when the amplitude reaches a certain threshold, subcritical instability and peak valley bifurcation occur simultaneously and a peak valley structure is formed; (3) this threshold depends to a great extent on the frequency; and (4) after the peak valley bifurcation there is a transition to a turbulent flow by the process of laminar flow collapse identical to that in Blasius flow.
