    Notes: Abstract Metapelitic and charnockitic granulites exposed around Chilka Lake in the northern sector of the Eastern Ghats, India, preserve a multi-stage P—T record. A high-T decompression from above 10 kbar to 8 kbar around 1100°C has been determined from Mg-rich metapelites (XMg〉0.60) with quartz-cordierite-orthopyroxene-sillimanite and cordierite—orthopyroxene—sapphirine—spinel assemblages. Between this and a second decompression to 6.0 kbar, isobaric cooling from 830 to 670°C at 8 kbar is evident. These changes are registered by the rim compositions of orthopyroxene and garnet in charnockites and metapelites with an orthopyroxene—quartz—garnet—plagioclase—cordierite assemblage, and are further supported by the garnet + quartz ± orthopyroxene + cordierite and biotite-producing reactions in sapphirine-bearing metapelites. Another indication of isobaric cooling from 800 to 650°C at 6.0 kbar is evident from rim compositions of orthopyroxene and garnet in patchy charnockites. Two sets of P—T values are obtained from metapelites with a quartz—plagioclase—garnet—sillimanite—cordierite assemblage: garnet and plagioclase cores yield 6.2 kbar, 700°C and the rims 5 kbar, 650°C, suggesting a third decompression.The earliest deformation (F1) structures are preserved in the larger charnockite bodies and the metapelites which retain the high P—T record. The effects of post-crystalline F2 deformation are observed in garnet megacrysts formed during or prior to F1 in some metapelites. Fold styles indicate a compressional regime during F1 and an extensional regime during F2. These lines of evidence and two phases of cooling at different pressures point to a discontinuity after the first cooling, and imply reworking.Two segments of the present P—T path replicate parts of the P—T paths suggested for four other granulite terranes in the Eastern Ghats, and the sense of all the paths is the same. This, plus the signature of three phases of deformation identified in the Eastern Ghats, suggests that the Chilka Lake granulites could epitomize the metamorphic evolution of the Eastern Ghats.

    Notes: Entamoeba histolytica, the protozoan parasite, is the causative agent of amoebiasis. The degree of virulence, as inferred from invasiveness, of potentially pathogenic strains may be regulated by both host and parasite factors that determine the gut environment. One such factor that plays an important role is the bacterial flora in the gut. Previous studies have clearly shown that bacterial flora is an important determinant of virulence in E. histolytica. However, the exact nature of changes induced in E. histolytica in response to bacteria and their role in virulence is not clear. In this study the levels of a number of molecules potentially important in virulence mechanisms were determined in E. histolytica cells grown with and without normal human bacterial flora, using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Significant changes were observed only after the E. histolytica cells had been adapted to grow with bacterial flora for a number of generations, and not in short term culture.

    Notes: Recently there have been several theoretical reports about models of amorphous transition metal alloys which take into account the fluctuations of local magnetic moments due to structural disorder.12 It is predicted that the local atomic moment on an atom depends on the number of first near neighbors with short distances (contracted atoms) and it could be positive, negative, or negligible. An amorphous Fe–Zr system could be a typical system to study these features which have a key role in determining the magnetic structure. Fe90Zr10 orders ferromagnetically at 230 K and exhibits a mixed state at T〈30 K showing spin glasslike behavior. Here we present the results on Mn and Ru substitution for Fe in Fe90Zr10. Mn is known to couple antiferromagnetically (AF) to Fe while Ru is expected to be nonmagnetic. We find that Mn reduces the Curie temperature (Tc) gradually while the spin freezing temperature (Tf) remains nearly constant. However, in the case of Ru, Tf drastically increases and 5 at. % Ru drives the system to a clear spin glass state. Hyperfine field studies show gradual evolution of AF coupled spins and their distribution, pointing out the existence of a well defined bimodal distribution. Fe–Fe exchange is believed to become antiferromagnetic for Fe–Fe distances 〈0.15 nm and the possible occurrence of short Fe–Fe distances in an amorphous matrix is often cited as the reason for the competing interactions to occur. However, Ru with a larger atomic size should have resulted in long Fe–Fe distance (which we have found in crystalline Fe2Zr which is a closed packed structure3). We propose that the dilution of Fe moment and the band modifications due to Ru substitution seemed to promote antiferromagnetic coupling in a Fe–Zr system. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A study of the normal state optical response of epitaxial thin films of electron doped superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y is reported. The normal state optical response of these films were not proportional to the temperature derivative of the resistance of the films as expected by a bolometric model and as seen in p-type superconductors such as YBa2Cu3O7−δ. The normal state optical response of the films with different transition temperatures were also remarkably different from each other. The observation of anomalous optical response is attributed to the possible presence of photoconductivity in Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4−y. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Microstructure and transport properties (between 80–450 K) of the Fe doped as-quenched Bi3Pb1Sr3Ca3Cu4−mFemOx (m=0.0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.05, and 0.06) type multicomponent glassy precursors for high-temperature superconductors were first reported in this paper. It has been shown from x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, density, and oxygen molar volume measurements that single phase homogeneous glasses are formed. Even with small addition of Fe, a large change of glass transition temperature (Tg) indicates appreciable change of glass network structure of the undoped (Bi,Pb)4Sr3Ca3Cu4Ox glass which is reflected in the properties of the corresponding high-temperature annealed glass termed as glass-ceramic (GC) samples. These GC samples are found to be superconductors. Addition of Fe is considered to break up some of the original Cu–O–Cu bonds forming some new Cu–O–Fe and Fe–O–Fe type bonds. A nonlinearity (increase) in the dc conductivity (σdc) of the as-quenched glass sample is observed around m=0.02. This increase of dc conductivity is ascribed to be due to the additional hopping between Fe2+ and Fe3+ which finally destroys superconductivity for m≥0.06. This is also responsible for the nonlinear variation of activation energy of the Fe doped glass and hence change in the superconducting properties of the glass ceramics. The high temperature (above θD/2, θD being the Debye temperature) σdc data of the glasses were explained by considering small polaron hopping conduction mechanism. The dc conductivity of these glasses are found to follow Greaves' variable range hopping model in the intermediate range of temperature. The polaron hopping model of Schnakenberg and Emin can predict the conductivity data in the high-temperature regime. All the Fe-doped glass ceramics showed superconducting transitions with Tc between 100 and 110 K. The corresponding zero resistance temperature, Tco which is maximum (79 K) for m=0, decreases consistently with increase of Fe-concentration and finally superconducting behavior is destroyed for m≥0.06. This behavior is consistent with-pair breaking mechanism. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A calcium-binding protein (CaBP) of Entamoeba histolytica was purified from an E. coli recombinant clone carrying the CaBP gene in a pET-3c expression vector using anion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatography. Examination of the amino-acid sequence of the recombinant protein suggested that it has four independent EF-hand motifs. The protein dissolved in cacodylate buffer was crystallized using the hanging-drop method with 2-methylpentane-2,4-diol (MPD) as the precipitant. X-ray diffraction data have been collected on these crystals using a MAR Research imaging-plate detector system attached to a Rigaku RU200 rotating-anode X-ray generator. The crystals belong to the hexagonal space group P6122 with unit-cell dimensions of a = b = 96.21, c = 65.48 Å. Preliminary molecular-replacement computations suggest that the structure of this protein is likely to be similar to that of calmodulin (CAM).
