Notes: Photo- and thermoinitiated radical polymerization of surface-active monomers with various structures was investigated in solution and in micelles in water. The relationship between kinetics and the structure of monomer associates was represented in the form of a universal curve. A model and kinetic description of polymerization in spherical micelles of monomer was proposed. The problem of micelle fixation by polymerization was solved. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The enhanced chemiluminescence reaction (ECL) was applied to the study of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) inactivation during the oxidation of p-iodophenol. Enzyme inactivation was shown to be the main reason for light decay in the course of the reaction. No individual effect of luminol and p-iodophenol as enhancer on HRP activity towards 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) was detected, enzymatic activity loss was detected only in the course of the ECL reaction. HRP activity towards ABTS (a colorimetric substrate) fell in a similar manner to the decay in light emission. The reactive radical species formed during enhancer oxidation were suggested as the main inactivating agents. The similarity of changes in light intensity and enzymatic activity allows one to apply the ECL reaction for testing potential stabilizers of HRP. The loss of enzyme activity can be partially explained by non-specific interaction of radical species with protein globule. The addition of bovine serum albumin provided almost complete protection of peroxidase from inactivation. This confirms the non-specific inactivation with highly reactive endogenous intermediates through the modification of a protein globule. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: A low-inertia, one-dimensional scanning IR microscope has been used to measure local short-time temperature rises in the zone of fracture of PETP films at degradation rates far below the speed of sound. The temperature profile of the heated zone, its width and cooling rate were determined. The maximum short-time temperature rise detected was 215 K.

Notes: The construction of a two-dimensional protein database of the human heart is presented. The database contains information on about 300 abundant proteins of human myocardial tissue, including approximately 40 proteins that were identified by different methods. Each protein was characterized according to several parameters, including molecular weight, isoelectric point, name, partial sequence, subcellular localization, and genetic as well as embryonic changes.

Notes: The effect of elasticlike uniaxial tension on molecular mobility in polymers have been studied over a wide temperature range using the broad-line NMR technique. The studies were carried out on oriented semicrystalline samples of nylon 6, poly(ethylene terephthlate), polypropylene, polyethylene, polyoxymethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), and polytetrafluorethylene. Above the low-temperature transition the NMR spectra are reversibly transformed under tension. Increases in the second moments of the spectra are attributed to weaker molecular motion in stressed polymers. The only exception is polypropylene, in which the reverse, i.e., enhancement of molecular mobility, can be observed in a certain temperature range. In the spectra of polymers stretched above the glass transition temperature the narrow component decreases, thus indicating inhibition of micro-Brownian motion, a phenomenon we call “mechanical vitrification.” Such mechanical vitrification is proved to result from reduction in the number of possible tie-chain conformations in the non-crystalline regions and not from closer packing of chains. In discussing the results we use the experimental data on the reduction of the number of gauche isomers under tension (on average, one transition of a gauche link to the trans state causes at least five methylene groups in the main chain to become immobile). The results of studies of molecular mobility in stretched polymers are used for more accurate definition of the mechanisms of molecular motion at different temperatures. A method for evaluation of the energy of intermolecular interactions which hinder small-scale motion at low temperature is suggested.

Notes: Wide-line NMR has been used in an investigation of noncrystalline (amorphous) regions in oriented semicrystalline polymers. Nylon 6 was chosen as a model material. The tie-chain length distribution function, the fraction of tie chains in the total number of chains in the crystallite cross section, and the relative number of taut tie chains have been determined. The data on the tie-chain length distribution are used in discussing specific features of vitrification of the amorphous regions in oriented polymers and in prediction macroscopic mechanical properties.

Notes: Benzyl radicals and ion-radical pairs have been detected on a magnesium surface by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy during benzyl halide reactions with magnesium at low temperatures. The ratio of these intermediates depends on the carbon-halogen bond energy in the starting benzyl halide, the nature of the magnesium surface and the degree of magnesium aggregation. Polymagnesiumbenzyl chlorides were formed in small amounts and only monomagnesium organic compounds were formed from benzyl bromide and benzyl iodide.
