Notes: In situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) measurements were carried out to elucidate conformation changes occurring during the isothermal melt crystallization of poly(ethylene-2,6-naphthalate) (PEN). Based on the band assignments for the components of the amorphous, α-crystal form, and β-crystal form of PEN in film samples, the in situ data was analyzed in terms of the amorphous- and crystal-trans conformations. It was observed at a higher isothermal crystallization temperature that the formation of amorphous-trans conformations precedes the growth of crystals. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The melt crystallization process of isotactic polystyrene (i-PS) was studied by means of in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, with a focus on the conformational changes during the induction period. The spectra obtained during the induction period suggested the occurrence of some ordered structure that is characterized by higher regularity and packing of the helical moieties than observed in the melt. This ordered structure was clearly different from the amorphous structure, and close to the crystal structure. The Avrami analysis indicated that the formation process of the ordered structure at the late stage of the induction period is similar to the growth process of the crystallites after the induction period. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: A model that can express the swelling of the filling-type membrane was developed by modifying a model that was developed for a crystalline polymer. The filling-type membrane is composed of two different polymers. One is porous substrate and another is a polymer that filled pores of the substrate. The filling technique can effectively suppress polymer swelling due to the substrate matrix. The model needs two parameters: one is a unit ratio of tie segments in the substrate to the filling polymer, f, which can express a mechanical strength of the substrate, and another is the Flory interaction parameter, χ, between the filling polymer and a solvent that expresses a mixing energy. A porous high-density polyethylene film was used as a porous substrate, and plasma-graft filling polymerization technique could make the filling-type membrane. Methylacrylate was used as a grafting monomer that filled the pores of substrate. A swelling behavior of the filling-type membrane and pure poly(methylacrylate) were measured by the vapor sorption method at different solvent activities. The model was in good agreement with experimental results for the filling-type membrane. Using the model, swelling of the filling-type polymer was compared with a crosslinked polymer, which can be expressed by Flory and Rehner model. The comparison showed that the filling technique is a good way to suppress polymer swelling, and a high crosslinking density is needed to obtain the same level of swelling suppression effect the filling type membrane showed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A mathematical representation of orientation distribution of structural units within the bulk polymer is given in terms of an expansion of the distribution function in a series of spherical harmonics. Each coefficient of the expanded series is discussed in general relation to the orientation factors, average degrees of orientation distribution, defined by several different authors independently. Several optical techniques to evaluate the orientation factors, the second and fourth moments of orientation distribution of crystalline and noncrystalline structural units from optical dichroic quantities, are discussed. Some graphical representations of the state of orientation are proposed, and the estimation of orientation distribution from the orientation factors of different orders is discussed quantitatively.

Notes: Dynamic x-ray diffraction and dynamic birefringence techniques are employed to determine the nature of the molecular motions associated with the α mechanical loss processes for low-density polyethylene. The results indicate that the low-temperature part of this loss (designated α1) is associated with an interlammellar “grain boundary” slip process while the higher temperature process (α2) involves intracrystalline motion and plasticity of the crystal itself. The activation energy for α1 determined by x-ray response is 25-30 kcal/mole, while that for α2 is 30-60 kcal/mole. The findings are consistent with dynamic infrared and dynamic light-scattering results which indicate that the motion of amorphous chains is closely correlated with that of the crystals. The relative contributions of amorphous and crystalline regions to the birefringence are dependent on the thermal treatment of the sample. The effect of static strain on the dynamic response indicates that crystal orientability is first increased with strain, probably because of splaying apart of lamellae, is subsequently decreased because of the restrictions of interlamellae tie chains, but then increases again as the spherulites are destroyed at high strain. The static strain reduces the orientability of amorphous regions.

Notes: Catalytic hydrolysis of enantiomeric substrates by N-decanoyl-L-histidine was studied at pH 7.30, 0.02M phosphate buffer, and 25°C in the presence of quaternized polymers. The rate of reaction is remarkably accelerated in the presence of polyethylenimine derivatives, but the observed stereoselectivity depends on the structure of the substrates.

Notes: Polymers that contain crown ether moieties at the side chain and are capable of forming rather tough film were synthesized by the polymer reaction of poly(vinyl alcohol) with formyl derivatives of aliphatic crown ethers such as 12-crown-4, 15-crown-5, and 18-crown-6. In the passive transport of alkali metal picrates across the poly(crown ether) membranes the permeation, particularly of alkali metals which tend to form intramolecular sandwich-type complexes with the crown ether rings, was retarded, compared with a poly(vinyl alcohol) membrane. The cation selectivities in the permeation of poly(crown ether) membranes differed significantly from those of poly(vinyl alcohol).

Notes: The catalytic activities of N-decanoyl-L-histidine and its methyl ester and of dipeptide derivatives containing an L-histidine residue toward the stereoselective hydrolysis of enantiomeric substrates have been studied at pH 7.30 (in 0.01M Bis-tris buffer) and 25°C in the presence of poly(ethyleneimine) derivatives. The dipeptide catalyst revealed greatest stereoselectivity in a quaternized poly(ethyleneimine) derivative. A comparison of catalytic effects on both the rate constants and stereoselectivities of N-decanoyl-L-histidine and its methyl ester elucidates the cooperative effects of carboxyl groups in the polymer domains. The structure of the substrates influenced both the rate constants and stereoselectivities in polymer domains.
