    Notes: Secondary structure investigations, affinities, and activities of neuropeptide Y analogues with respect to the Y1 and the Y2 receptor are reviewed. The results are discussed with respect to the different prerequisites for affinities to both receptor subtypes. The results from a systematic scanning of the hormone using L-alanine and from a large variety of discontinuous and cyclic analogs suggest that two different conformations of neuropeptide Y are adopted at the Y1 and Y2 receptors. Whereas a C-terminal turn structure is suggested for Y1 receptor affinity, an α-helical conformation of the C-terminus is afforded for good binding to the Y2 receptor. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A new approach for evaluating the secondary structure of proteins by CD spectroscopy of overlapping peptide segments is applied to porcine adenylate kinase (AK1) and yeast guanylate kinase (GK3).One hundred seventy-six peptide segments of a length of 15 residues, overlapping by 13 residues and covering the complete sequences of AK1 and GK3, were synthesized in order to evaluate their secondary structure composition by CD spectroscopy.The peptides were prepared by solid phase multiple peptide synthesis method using the 9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl/tert-butyl strategy. The individual peptide secondary structures were studied with CD spectroscopy in a mixture of 30% trifluoroethanol in phosphate buffer (pH 7) and subsequently compared with x-ray data of AK1 and GK3.Peptide segments that cover α-helical regions of the AK1 or GK3 sequence mainly showed CD spectra with increasing and decreasing Cotton effects that were typical for appearing and disappearing α-helical structures. For segments with dominating β-sheet conformation, however, the application of this method is limited due to the stability and clustering of β-sheet segments in solution and due to the difficult interpretation of random-coiled superimposed β-sheet CD signals.Nevertheless, the results of this method especially for α-helical segments are very impressive. All α-helical and 71% of the β-sheet containing regions of the AK1 and GK3 could be identified. Moreover, it was shown that CD spectra of consecutive peptide content reveal the appearance and disappearance of α-helical secondary structure elements and help localizing them on the sequence string. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: New battery systems. The reversible storage of electrical energy plays a central role in the development of electric vehicles, load levelling in power stations, and technical utilization of solar energy. Electrochemistry offers interesting solutions with optimal energy density; however, these have reached technical maturity in only a few cases. The conventional lead/acid accumulator is being further improved among aqueous systems. Moreover, various other lines of development have been initiated in recent years, such as nickel/zinc and chlorine/zinc accumulators, which offer totally fresh perspectives from an electrochemical and engineering point of view. In the case of zinc/air and aluminium/air batteries, external redeposition of the metal is envisaged. From a practical point of view, aqueous systems are unsurpassable. Metals with an extremely high negative potential like sodium or lithium can only be cycled in the absence of water. Systems with molten salts or solid electrolytes do not suffer from this drawback. The sodium/sulfur battery, which is characterized by readily available cell components of low environmental impact, is presently undergoing intensive development. However, thermal discharge represents a technical problem. The future of these new developments will be governed by their economics, energy density, energy efficiency, power density, and last but not least by their cyclability. These properties have not yet been optimized in a single system.

    Notes: The developmental cycle of the teeth in Plethodon cinereus is analyzed on morphological grounds using alizarin preparations. All the stages in development do not occupy the same proportion of the life cycle time. Functional teeth and germs at an early stage in development occupy a large proportion of the life cycle time, whereas the processes of tooth shedding and ankylosis occur very quickly. The time during which any locus does not bear a functional tooth, and is therefore a non-functional locus, is reduced to a minimum. P. cinereus has a basic pattern of tooth replacement which is consistent with Zahnreihen which are 2.0 tooth spaces apart. Variations in the replacement pattern are common and these are produced by relatively small fluctuations in the spacing of the Zahnreihen around the „mean„ of 2.0. Localized disturbances which produce breaks in the replacement pattern and cause waves to cross also occur. These may be due to the failure of tooth germs to develop, the fusion of tooth germs, or may be the result of the inherent variability in a complex biological system. This variability causes individual tooth germs to develop too slowly or too quickly and hence assume an „abnormal“ position thus causing breaks in the replacement pattern. Tooth replacement may be controlled by an intra-local mechanism(s) rather than by stimuli which travel along the jaw.

    Notes: The anatomy of neurons of the stomatogastric nervous system of Ascheta domesticus was studied using heavy metal iontophoresis through cut nerve ends followed by silver intensification. Nineteen categories of neuron are described and compared with neurons known from the stomatogastric nervous system of other insects. Possible functions for the neurons are suggested. Motor neuron candidates are suggested for all parts of the gut served by the stomatogastric nervous system, and axons of sensory neurons of the anterior pharynx are located. There are four neuron types that cannot readily be assigned motor, sensory, or interneuron functions: large dorsal cells of the frontal ganglion; the two neurons of the nervus connectivus, and two categories of neurons in the median neurosecretory cell group of the pars intercerebralis, the axons of which are contained in the stomatogastric nerves.

    Notes: The interspecific variation in the positional and mesenteric relationship of the mammalian oviduct to the ovary observed among 41 species is summarized by distinguishing eight morphological types of relationship. The recognition of types is based on wide species differences in: the position of the oviduct with reference to the mesosalpinxal fold and ovary; the extent to which oviducal mesenteries enclose the ovary in a periovarial sac; the degree of closure and method of formation of the peritoneal opening to the periovarial sac; and the morphology of the oviduct.

    Notes: The distribution of the ganglia and nerves of the stomatogastric nervous system and the innervation of the extrinsic and intrinsic muscles are described. Median unpaired frontal and hypocerebral ganglia and paired ingluvial ganglia are present. The anterior pharynx is innervated by branches of the frontal nerve and by the anterior and posterior pharyngeal nerves, originating from the frontal ganglion. The posterior pharyngeal nerves are linked to nerves innervating the posterior part of the pharynx which have their origin in the hypocerebral ganglion, the anterior portion of which has previously been regarded as part of the recurrent nerve. Paired esophageal nerves run the length of the esophagus and crop between the hypocerebral and and ingluvial ganglia, innervating the muscularis by serial side branches. From each ingluvial ganglion runs an ingluvial nerve which innervates the gizzard and a cecal nerve which innervates the midgut and its ceca. At the posterior end of the midgut there is a poorly developed nerve ring. Nerves running posteriorly from this nerve ring link the stomatogastric nervous system with the proctodeal innervation from the terminal abdominal ganglion.Multipolar peripheral neurons are present on the muscularis of the whole of the foregut, rather randomly distributed on the crop and gizzard but forming fairly definite groupings at some points on the pharynx. Though of varied appearance, these cells could not be divided into discrete morphological categories. Peripheral neurons on the midgut are of different and characteristic morphology, though a few cells of the same appearance as those of the foregut occur at the midgut-hindgut boundary. Nerve fibers on the gut almost invariably terminate on the fibers of the muscularis.

    Notes: A model N-methylol reactant system based on pyrrolidone derivatives has been used to study the chemical factors that control formaldehyde release. Fabric samples of known composition were prepared from chemically pure reactants and formaldehyde release was determined by the AATCC Sealed Jar Test. This work provides support for prior suggestions and a more direct approach for understanding unexpected results from tests on post-and precure fabrics. In addition, new findings demonstrate that the N-methylol reactant, its byproducts, and pure zinc nitrate are capable of reducing the level of formaldehyde release.

    Description / Table of Contents: Thermal-mechanical and isothermal fatigue behaviour of the nickel-base superalloy IN 792 CCMany components used in high temperature applications are exposed to complex thermal-mechanical loadings during operation. For this reason the effect of start-stop-cycles with thermalmechanical fatigue (TMF) as consequence was investigated by means of In-Phase(IP)and Out-of-Phase (OP) TMF tests. The fatigue life of the γ'hardend nickel-base cast superalloy IN 792 CC decreases with increasing maximum temperatures Tmax of the TMF cycles, due to the increasing plastic deformations and the increasing mean stress (OP-TMF) or increasing intergranular; damage (IP-TMF), respectively. These relations can be satisfactorily described using the Manson-Coffin-relationship or the damage parameters of Smith-Watson-Topper and Ostergren. By contrast, the influence of different phase shifts between temperature and mechanical loading also cannot be approximately described with one consistant relation between damage parameters and fatigue life. The evaluation of TMF loadings based on results from isothermal LCF-tests with the same frequency and respective mechanical strain leads always to an overrating of the fatigue life, even if the temperature of the isothermal test is the maximum temperature of the TMF cycle. This applies when comparing mechanical loading values as well as when comparing damage parameters.
    Notes: Beim Betrieb von Anlagen unter erhöhter Temperatur sind Bauteile Komplexen thermisch-mechanischen Beanspruchungen ausgesetzt. Deshalb wurde die Auswirkung von wiederholten Anfahr- und Abfahrvorgängen, die thermisch-mechanische Ermüdungsbelastungen (TMF) zur Folge haben, mit Hilfe von Out-of-Phase (OP) und In-Phase (IP) TMF Experimenten untersucht. An der γ'verfestigten Nickelbasis-Gußlegierung IN 792 CC nimmt die Lebensdauer mit steigender Maximaltemperatur Tmax der TMF Zyklen aufgrund der wachsenden plastischen Verformungen und der zunehmenden Mittelspannungen (bei OP-TMF) bzw. der wachsenden intergranularen Schädigung (bie IP-TMF) ab. Diese Zusammenhänge können für IP-TMF bzw. OP-TMF getrennt durch die Manson-Coffin-Beziehung oder die Schädigungsparameter nach Smith-Watson-Topper und Ostergren befriedigend beschrieben werden. Der Einfluß unterschiedlicher Phasenlagenzwischen Temperatur und mechanischer Beanspruchung läßt sich dagegen auch nicht näherungsweise auf einen einheitlichen Zusammenhang zwischen Schädigungsparameter und Lebensdauer abbilden. Die Bewertung von TMF-Beanspruchungen; durch Ergebnisse isothermer LCF-Versuche mit gleicher Versuchsfrequenz und jeweils vergleichbaren mechanischen Belastungen führt stets zu einer Lebensdauerüberschätzung, auch wenn als Referenz isotherme Versuche bei der Maximaltemperatur des TMF-Zyklus herangezogen werden. Dies gilt sowohl für den Vergleich basierend auf mechanischen Beanspruchungsgrößen, als auch für den Vergleich anhand von Schädigungsparametern.
