Notes: Abstract Fourteen hypertensive (174.3/98.3 mmHg) non-diabetic patients were given a euglyceamic glucose clamp along with infusion of 0.9% NaCl and the prostacyclin (PGI2) analogue Iloporst (0.7 ng · kg · min−1). Substrate oxidation was also determined by indirect calorimetry. Over the last 60 min of the clamp, Iloprost vs saline improved whole body glucose disposal (WBGD) (35 vs 28.3 μmol · kg−1 LBM) and non-oxidative glucose metabolism (24.7 vs 18.1 μmol · kg−1 LBM · min−1). Iloprost delivery was associated with a significant decrease in membrane microviscosity (0.253 vs 0.205), but did not affect arterial blood pressure and heart rate. In nine patients, skeletal muscle blood flow (SMBF) and insulin-stimulated glucose uptake (GU) were also studied. At the end of the study, despite a similar SMBF (37 vs 38 ml · min−1 · kg−1), GU (0.55 vs 0.46 mmol · 1−1) was significantly increased by Iloprost infusion. Percentage decrease in membrane microviscosity was correlated with percentage increase in WBGD (r=0.65) and non-oxidative glucose metabolism (r=0.68). In conclusion, low-dose Iloprost infusion improves insulin action and non-oxidative glucose metabolism in hypertensive patients.

Notes: The nonlinear viscoelastic behaviour of Hydrothane®, a hydrophilic polyurethane used for biomedical applications, has been studied. The material has been tested in stress-relaxation experiments in a range of deformation up to 25%. Isochrone curves have been predicted by using the rubber elasticity theory and separating strain and time effect. Stress-strain curves obtained at different strain rates have been interpreted introducing strain rate dependent scaling factors.

Notes: The mechanical characterization of rabbit Achilles' tendon and anterior cruciate ligament is presented. Both static and dynamic mechanical tests have been performed on fresh explanted tissues. Experimental results are presented and discussed in terms of a relationship between structural architecture and mechanical properties. The differences in collagen fibre configuration and composition between tendon and ligament influence the tensile and viscoelastic properties. In particular, tendons and ligaments showed a gradual transition from a rubber-like to a glassy-like behaviour during the loading process due to the traightening of collagen fibres.

Notes: Abstract In this work thermo-mechanical properties of MDF cements have been analyzed under complex thermal hystories. In particular the temperature sensitivity of the material has been investigated using dynamical-mechanical analysis. Several tests have been performed to investigate the behaviour of the material from room temperature to 250 °C at a fixed frequency (1 Hz). The viscoelastic behaviour of the composite was then analyzed at different frequencies: it was observed that the material exhibits two main transitions, around 60 °C and 160 °C. For comparison with differential scanning calorimeter analysis the first peak was attributed to the glass transition of the PVAAc while the second one was associated to the melting of the crystalline part of the polymer. In addition, dynamical-mechanical analysis that included complex thermal hystories, were performed both on pure polymer films, and on the MDF cements, confirming that the drop of mechanical properties with temperature is essentially due to the nature of the viscoelastic component. Results obtained are in agreement with the picture of a composite in which a polymeric thermoplastic matrix surrounds partially hydrated cement particles.

Notes: Abstract The structural relaxation process of an inorganic glass (Li2O2SiO2) at different cooling rates has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry. A four-parameter model – Tool-Narayanaswamy-Moynihan (TNM) model was applied to simulate the normalized specific heat curve measured. Four parameters, Δh*/R, β, ln A, and x were obtained and compared with the values obtained from the isothermal approach.

Notes: Thermal treatment of amorphous poly(aryl-ether-ether ketone) below the glass transition temperature has been studied. The extent of aging was measured by differential scanning calorimetry. X-ray and Fourier transform infrared spectra were used to study both melt-cast and annealed samples. The effect of the thermal treatment of viscoelastic response was evaluated using creep tests. Aging has been shown to be accompanied by a marked change in the transport properties of the material.
