Notes: A dc glow discharge source with controlled plasma potential was developed for application in plasma immersion ion implantation processing of materials surfaces. This type of ion implantation system allows cost effective surface modification of workpieces with complex shapes. The effects of the nitrogen plasma etching during the plasma immersion ion implantation process was studied using Si wafers as monitors, as we varied the externally controlled plasma potential between 0 and 350 V. When the plasma potential is controlled below 70 V, the ion implantation is dominant, otherwise the etching overtakes. The nitrogen implanted silicon wafers were analyzed by high resolution x-ray diffraction and Auger electron spectroscopy which revealed successful implantation of ions with accumulated nitrogen dose of 1.5×1017 cm−2, for the low potential case. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An active anode plasma source has been developed for use in a magnetically insulated ion diode operated on a 1010-W pulsed power generator. This source uses an inductive voltage from a single turn coil to beak down an annular gas puff produced by a supersonic nozzle. The resulting plasma is magnetically driven toward the radial insulating magnetic field in the diode accelerating gap and stagnates at a well-defined surface after about 300 ns to form a plasma anode layer defined by magnetic flux surfaces. An ion beam is then extracted from this plasma layer by applying a 150-kV, 1-μs pulse to the accelerating gap. Optimization of the timing of the gas puff, the plasma production discharge, and the high voltage pulse has resulted in 1-μs duration 75–150-keV ion beam pulses with 〉100-A/cm2 peak ion current density over an area of about 400 cm2. Up to 5 J/cm2 has been collected by a 4-cm2 calorimeter. The diode impedance history can be varied so that rising, flat, and falling voltage pulse waveforms can be produced. Streak photographs of beamlets impinging on a scintillator and time integrated targets both show beam divergence angles ≤3°. However, under certain operating conditions, large excursions (∼25°) in mean aiming angle on time scales of 20–200 ns are observed.

Notes: Abstract A new type of PbO2-coated metal anode, useful for electrochemical processing requiring the use of high-overpotential anodes, was prepared by applying to a titanium substrate an undercoating of Ti-Ta oxides, then covering the undercoating with an intermediate coating of stress-free α-PbO2 deposit, and finally covering the intermediate coating with a Ta2O5 particle-admixed β-PbO2 deposit. The anode thus produced was found to be superior to the anodized Pb or platinized Ti anode in respect of oxygen overvoltage, and corrosion resistance, even in solutions containing organic solvents. The possibility for use in chromium plating is also indicated.

Notes: Abstract The design and construction of a compact high-voltage pulse generator for providing input electron beam power for the LAP/INPE 32 GHz gyrotron and for treatment of metal and polymer materials by plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) are described. The generator was built on a circuit category of Pulse Forming Network (PFN), consisting of nine LC sections with L = 270 μH and C = 2.5 nF. The instrument was designed to produce a flat 30 kV, several Amps pulse in 15 μs pulse length with pulse repetition frequency (PRF) of 8 to 100 Hz. By means of a resonant charging inductance it is possible to gain an output voltage with a factor of 1.8 higher than the voltage supplied by the pulse generator. The generator is fed with sine-wave, constant current source, and a 60 kV, 15 mA switching power supply.

Notes: Abstract We have carried out a simultaneous observation of radar and optical meteors with the MU radar (Middle and Upper Atmosphere Radar), Shigaraki and TV camera systems. We usually obtained about 20 meteors per an hour with 85 mm lens, but very small part of them are simultaneously observed by the MU radar (〈 5%), suggesting the significance of rectangular scatterring. We have analyzed about 20 simultaneous meteors with magnitudes from 0 to +5.5, most of which are overdense meteors. For Geminid meteors, a linear relation between the logarithm of the echo duration and the absolute magnitude of the TV meteor, was deduced.

Notes: Abstract We have carried out double-station TV meteor observations between 1990 and 1994. The orbits of 326 meteors have been determined from doubly observed meteors, and radiant distributions are studied. The mean magnitude of the observed meteors was as faint as +4.7, since I.I. (Image Intensifier) and Video cameras were used. Radiants were widely distributed over the celestial sphere. The velocity distribution showed some similarity with the distribution predicted by the theoretical radiant distribution from comets rather than that from asteroids. In all 13 showers including both major and minor meteor showers were detected from radiant distributions of the observed meteors; from the orbital elements and meteor velocities as well as from the radiant directions.
