Notes: This paper deals with the effect of anisotropy on fracture processes of a directionally solidified superalloy, Mar-M247, under a push–pull creep-fatigue condition at high-temperature. Three kinds of specimen were cut from a cast plate such that their axes possess angles of 0°, 45° and 90° with respect to the 〈001〉 orientation that is aligned parallel to the solidification direction (also to the grain boundaries and primary dendrite axis); these specimens being denoted the 0° specimen, the 45° specimen, and the 90° specimen, respectively. The tests were conducted at 1273 K (1000 °C) in air under equal magnitudes of the range of a ΔJ-related parameter, ΔWc , which represents the driving force for crack growth in creep-fatigue. Although the grain boundaries are macroscopically parallel to the solidification direction, they are wavy or serrated microscopically. Small cracks nucleate along parts of the grain boundaries perpendicular to the stress axis in all specimens. The 90° specimen has the shortest crack initiation life and the 0° specimen has the longest. In the 90° and 45° specimens, intergranular cracks continue to nucleate and a main crack is formed along the grain boundary due to the frequent coalescence of small cracks. In the 0° specimen, cracks grow into the grain, and transgranular cracks coalesce along the primary dendrite or grain boundary. The 0° specimen exhibits the slowest crack growth rate and the 90° specimen the fastest. These differences in the initiation and growth behaviour of small cracks cause the longest failure life in the 0° specimen and the shortest in the 90° specimen.

Notes: Summary Alanine was the best amino donor among various amino acids and NH4Cl for the phenylalanine production of Micrococus luteus. l-Alanine was regenerated at the rate of 9.2μ moles/min/g dry cells from NH4Cl and pyruvate by immobilized Clostridium butyricum-alanine dehydrogenase. l-Phenylalanine was continuously produced from hydrogen, NH4Cl and phenylpyruvate by coupling immobilized C. butyricum, alanine dehydrogenase and M. luteus. The rate of phenylalanine production was 1.74 μ moles/min/g dry cells.

Notes: Summary A unified theory on the lattice dynamics and the melting in compounds is presented by taking into account the Coulomb interaction. The melting temperature is determined by the mean value of the eigenfrequencies of the atoms. The theory is applied to zincblende and rock salt structure crystals.

Notes: Abstract Cultured cells ofThalictrum flavum take up berberine exogenously added to medium against the concentration gradient. This uptake was temperature-dependent and sensitive to plasma membrane-bound ATPase inhibitors such as sodium orthovanadate and diethylstilbestrol, indicating that the process is mediated by an energy-requiring system. The time-course of pH-shift during berberine uptake suggests the participation of a berberine-proton antiport system in the berberine uptake by the cultured cells. In addition, the existence of a specific transport system was suggested by the competitive inhibition of berberine uptake by berberine analogues, coptisine and jatrorrhizine.

Notes: Abstract The reaction sequences in the synthesis of aluminium borate whiskers from the raw material mixtures (Al2(SO4)3/H3BO3/K2SO4, K2SO4 as a flux) were investigated by differential thermal analysis-thermogravimetric analysis (DTA-TG), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and a direct observation of the reacting mixture. DTA of a mixture with the optimum composition for obtaining well-grown whiskerswith a high yield, and XRD of the same mixtures quenched at various temperatures, showed that the reaction proceeds through formation and decomposition of double salts of aluminium: first tripotassium aluminium sulphate and then monopotassium aluminium sulphate. This reaction sequence and the DTA results of mixtures with different K2SO4/(Al-B) ratios were successfully explained by the phase diagram of the Al2(SO4)3 K2SO4 system. Direct observation of the reacting mixture confirmed the explanation. The compositions of reacting mixtures were then calculated from the TG data and traced on the phase diagram. The tracing showed that the decomposition of aluminium salts occurred in different physical states, depending on the K2SO4/(Al+B) ratio, in solid, solid and then liquid, or liquid phase. This difference in decomposition explained well the effect of the K2SO4/(Al+B) ratio on the morphology of the whiskers. The effect of the B/Al ratio in the mixture was similarly explained by the correlated change in the K2SO4/Al ratio.

Notes: Abstract Cowpea (Vigna unguliculata Walp) is considered one of the most drought resistant species among the pulse crops. It was suggested that in the lower part of the stem, parenchymatous tissue for storing water has been developed for the function of drought resistance. However, such tissue has not been identified yet. In order to identify the water storing tissue in the stem of cowpea plant, the authors performed neutron radiography, which provides a non-destructive image of water distribution pattern in a plant. Common bean plant and soybean plant were used as references. Comparing the neutron radiograph for the stems of the plants, i.e., cowpea, common bean and soybean plants, the parenchymatous tissue with water storing function was distinguished in the intermode between primary leaf and the first trifoliate leaf specifically in cowpea plant.

Notes: Abstract The direct current electric potential around a number of penny-shaped cracks was analyzed by Crack-Flow Modification Method (CFMM) in order to investigate the applicability of the Direct Current Electrical Potential Method (DC-EPM) to the detection of damage due to multiple small internal cracks. The potential difference was calculated for the cracking process in a smooth round bar specimen of a Type 304 stainless steel under a creep-fatigue condition. It was clarified by the analysis that, in the case of the present creep-fatigue test, damage could be detected at about a half of the lifetime assuming that a change of 1 percent in the potential difference was measurable by a voltmeter.

Notes: Abstract A method for evaluating the distribution of electrical potential around multiple through cracks is proposed. The method gives accurate potential values for cracks with different lengths at random positions by combining theoretical potential functions for a single crack in an infinite plate. The validity of the method is numerically confirmed with respect to problems of a single and three cracks existing in a square plate subjected to a current flow, and the method is applied to a problem of random cracks in an infinite plate.
