    Notes: . Axenic cultures of Entamoeba histolytica strains HK-9, HM-1, and Rahman were fractionated to provide plasma membranes, internal, vesiculated membranes, and a soluble cytosol. Each particulate fraction was solubilized and all fractions were analyzed by techniques designed to demonstrate molecular complexity and serologic reactivity. The cytosol contained more antigenic moieties than either membrane fraction; however, the antigens associated with the membranes had very high reactivity and lower nonspecific activity than the cytosol.

    Notes: SUMMARY. 1. A procedure has been developed which uses environmental data to predict the probabilities of macro-invertebrate taxa occurring at running-water sites in Great Britain.2. Biological, physical and chemical data were collected from twenty- one sites on three river systems in order to evaluate the procedure.3. For most sites the number and type of taxa recorded, using a standard sampling programme, were very close to those predicted using twenty-eight environmental variables.4. Comparison with other studies at the same sites showed that most taxa whose probability of occurrence was ≥0.5 could be found with more intensive sampling.5. Reducing the number of variables used in making the predictions from twenty-eight to five resulted in only a slight loss of predictive accuracy.6. Combinations of chemical and physical variables gave better predictions than equivalent numbers of physical variables only but the latter may be more appropriate where chemical pollution is known, or suspected to occur.7. The procedure is of practical value in the detection and assessment of pollution.8. It may also be used to explore patterns in the structure and functioning of stream communities.

    Notes: The method of chemical timing for obtaining picosecond time-resolved fluorescence spectra has been applied to the measurement of intramolecular vibrational redistribution (IVR) in S1 p-difluorobenzene. In this report, a more detailed examination of the spectroscopy of some vibrationally mixed levels is used in conjunction with the previously measured IVR parameters to construct a generalized picture of the rovibronic level structure giving rise to IVR. Strong, off-resonance interactions are observed to mix levels separated by several cm−1, contributing additional discrete structure to the spectrum but not directly affecting the IVR dynamics. The dynamics, instead, reflect on-resonance interactions between levels separated only by a few tenths of a wave number that give rise to congested background emission. Evidence is seen in comparisons between bulb and jet spectra for the involvement of vibration-rotation coupling in both the off-resonance and the on-resonance interactions. A particularly important and subtle rotational effect is the change of the coupled vibrational field with rotational excitation due to the variation of rotational constants with vibrational excitation, leading to a smoother congested background.

Early versions of the river invertebrate prediction and classification system (RIVPACS) used TWINSPAN to classify reference sites based on the macro-invertebrate fauna, followed by multiple discriminant analysis (MDA) for prediction of the fauna to be expected at new sites from environmental variables. This paper examines some alternative methods for the initial site classification and a different technique for prediction.2. A data set of 410 sites from RIVPACS II was used for initial screening of seventeen alternative methods of site classification. Multiple discriminant analysis was used to predict classification group from environmental variables.3. Five of the classification–prediction systems which showed promise were developed further to facilitate prediction of taxa at species and at Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) family level.4. The predictive capability of these new systems, plus RIVPACS II, was tested on an independent data set of 101 sites from locations throughout Great Britain.5. Differences between the methods were often marginal but two gave the most consistently reliable outputs: the original TWINSPAN method, and the ordination method semi-strong hybrid multidimensional scaling (SSH) followed by K-means clustering.6. Logistic regression, an alternative approach to prediction which does not require the prior development of a classification system, was also examined. Although its performance fell within the range offered by the other five systems tested, it conveyed no advantages over them.7. This study demonstrated that several different multivariate methods were suitable for developing a reliable system for predicting expected probability of occurrence of taxa. This is because the prediction system involves a weighted average smoothing across site groupings.8. Hence, the two most promising procedures for site classification, coupled to MDA, were both used in the exploratory analyses for RIVPACS III development, which utilized over 600 reference sites.

    Notes: Historical records (1900–66) from the Lepidoptera Recording Scheme were used to examine associations with weather for three butterfly species Ladoga Camilla, Celastrina argiolus and Nymphalis polychloros. For each species, a series of equations was examined in which the number of records per year was considered to be a function of (1) the number of records in the previous year and (2) temperature or rainfall in the months leading up to the current flight-period. Significant associations with weather were found for all species. Further multiple regression equations were obtained, using a stepwise procedure to select weather variables contributing separately to annual variation in the number of records. For L. Camilla and C. argiolus, predictions from these equations were significantly correlated with data on changes in abundance for the later period 1976–91. No recent data exist for JV. polychloros, which is now very rare, or possibly extinct, in Britain. Similar historic data are available for other butterfly species and for other taxa. It is suggested that these types of data have potential for the study, and perhaps prediction, of some effects of climate change.

    Notes: A least-squares refinement program RESTRAIN has been developed, which is capable of refining macromolecular structures using structure amplitudes, phases from isomorphous replacement or anomalous scattering and pseudo-energy restraints. In addition to positional parameters and isotropic temperature factors, anisotropic mean-square displacements may be refined either as individual atomic U tensors or as TLS tensors applied to groups of atoms. Anharmonic effects may be handled by coupling together occupancies to enable the electron density of an atomic group to be distributed over more than one subsite. A novel way of restraining groups of atoms to be planar has been developed that does not require dummy atoms and does not restrain the plane to lie in its current orientation.
