Description / Table of Contents:
Description / Table of Contents: Stone glaciers (glaciers) are widespread in many mountain systems of the world. They are formed in conditions of permafrost and deep dissection of the relief. Until now, these periglacial landforms remain extremely poorly studied in all respects, but this is especially true of their internal structure, genesis and evolution. Little attention is paid to them in Russian literature, although they are found in some mountainous regions more often than glaciers. The history of study, distribution, external appearance, internal structure, nature of movement, genesis and evolution of stone glaciers are described in an entertaining form. Their influence on various natural processes in the mountains is considered, considerations are made regarding the relationship of stone glaciers with human economic activity. The book is intended for a wide range of readers, including students and schoolchildren.

Notes: An approach for calculating the free energy of embryo formation for multicomponent heterogeneous nucleation has been developed. The approach is based on a differential version of the capillarity approximation. It is considered that a liquid droplet is formed due to the deposition of several gaseous compounds onto a nucleus containing a spherical insoluble core and nonvolatile soluble substances. The approach links interfacial free energies of the surfaces, the size of the insoluble core, and chemical characteristics of the substances with the free energy of the embryo formation. The free energy of embryo formation as well as the critical supersaturation are influenced by the ratios of the Henry's Law constants to the partial pressures of the species. Multicomponent nucleation with a dominant species can be described as a quasibinary nucleation of the dominant species and a virtual species. As an example, the free energy in a binary system of water and acid is considered. It is shown that water+acid nucleation on such nuclei is influenced by the acid, soluble nonvolatile compounds and insoluble substances. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The formation of specific structural patterns as a result of the repeated UV laser irradiation on various metallic samples (Ag, Al, Au, bronze, Cu, and Pb) is reported. The physical processes underlying the formation of more or less organized periodical structures in this case are discussed.

Notes: The quasistatic magnetic field generated by short laser pulse in a uniform rarefied plasma is found analytically and compared to that of two-dimensional particle simulations. It is shown that an axisymmetric laser pulse generates an azimuthal magnetic field the structure of which is rather complicated inside the laser pulse body. Behind the pulse in the wake region the magnetic field contains a component that is homogeneous in the longitudinal direction and a component that is oscillating at the wave number 2kp, where kp is the wave number of the plasma wake. Particle simulations confirm the analytical results and are also used to treat the case of high intense laser pulses. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The basic equations for self-consistent pulse evolution taking into account stimulated Raman backward and near-backward scattering are formulated. These equations are used to study the three-dimensional (3-D) axisymmetrical self-consistent laser pulse evolution analytically and numerically. Special attention is paid to the case of the pulse self-modulation. The spectra and intensity of backscattered radiation are obtained in both the strong and weak coupling limits. A simple criterion to ignore the action of stimulated Raman backscattering on the pulse evolution is derived. The possibility of using a backscattered radiation spectrum for diagnostics of both the laser-pulse and generated wake-field evolution is discussed. Triggering of the laser-pulse self-modulation by the relativistic self-focusing and by a second frequency-shifted weak-intensity laser pulse is discussed. Basing on the obtained results, a new configuration of stimulation and maintaining a strong wake-field excitation is proposed. This configuration makes it possible to obtain acceleration of electrons up to giga-electron-volt energies in the field of the excited plasma wave by using the laser technology that is presently available. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
