Notes: Selecting the most suitable, cost-efficient alloy for a given application should not be difficult if the methodology described in this paper is followed. The first step is to identify those alloys with the desired corrosion resistance. Factors other than chemical composition have a bearing on an alloy's corrosion resistance. Service environment and nature of the product application must also be considered. These conditions are discussed in the text. Consideration should be given to other key issues such as mechanical properties required as well as method of fabrication, design, condition and availability of the candidate alloy. To simplify selection, the author discusses severe corrodents and aggressive environments that are commonly encountered in the process industries, and describes the characteristics of alloys that might be considered for each type of corrosive service. Cross referenced charts position these alloys to show their relative resistance to each type of corrosion attack. While the paper is not designed to replace the technical expertise of a corrosion engineer, the author feels it can serve as a good starting point in the alloy selection process.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes the initial development of a computer based Rapid Prototyping Design Advice System. The system is intended to assist the designer or project manager, particularly those in small and medium sized companies, in planning the prototyping stage of product development. It provides the user with an efficient and user friendly development aid which uses information obtained from the user and Computer Aided Design data to recommend suitable rapid prototyping solutions.

Notes: Abstract A parallel molecular dynamics algorithm is presented for computingconfigurations of relatively large defects in crystalline silicon, as modelledby the Stillinger–Weber (SW) three-body interatomic potential. Thealgorithm is based on a partitioning of physical space among the N processorswith atoms migrating freely between the partitions. Implementation on aneight-processor IBM SP2 computer shows the increased efficiency withsimulation size expected because of the increased computational load perprocessor relative to communication overhead. The parallel efficiency reached70% for 21 952 atoms. Calculations are presented for the thermodynamics offormation of interstitial and vacancy clusters containing up to seven pointdefects. The clusters were relaxed within a host lattice of about 3000 siliconatoms subjected to periodic boundary conditions. Free energies of formationfor temperatures 500 K ≤ T ≤ 1600 K were computed using thermodynamicintegration. Computed equilibrium distributions for these clusters show ashift to the larger species at lower temperatures, as expected. The SWpotential predicts greater driving forces for interstitial aggregation thanvacancy aggregation across the entire temperature range. Model calculationsfor a large vacancy cluster are also presented to demonstrate the utility ofthe algorithm for exploring very large defects in silicon.

Notes: The quality of large semiconductor crystals grown from the melt for use in electronic and optoelectronic devices is strongly influenced by the intricate coupling of heat and mass transfer and melt flow in growth systems. This paper reviews the present state of understanding of these processes starting from the simplest descriptions of solidification processes to detailed numerical calculations needed for quantitative modeling of processing with solidification. Descriptions of models for the vertical Bridgman-Stockbarger and Czochralski crystal growth techniques are included as examples of the level of understanding of industrially important methods.

Notes: A Petrov-Galerkin finite element method is presented for calculation of the steady, axisymmetric thermosolutal convection and interface morphology in a model for vertical Bridgman crystal growth of nondilute binary alloys. The Petrov-Galerkin method is based on the formulation for biquadratic elements developed by Heinrich and Zienkiewicz and is introduced into the calculation of the velocity, temperature and concentration fields. The algebraic system is solved simultaneously for the field variables and interface shape by Newton's method. The results of the Petrov-Galerkin method are compared critically with those of Galerkin's method using the same finite element grids. Significant improvements in accuracy are found with the Petrov-Galerkin method only when the mesh is refined and when the formulation of the residual equations is modified to account for the mixed boundary conditions that arise at the solidification interface. Calculations for alloys with stable and unstable solute gradients show the occurrence of classical flow transitions and morphological instabilities in the solidification system.
