Notes: Sampling of airborne pollen and spores at Ny-Alesund on Spitsbergen in the summer of 1986, by means of a Burkard pollen and spore trap, revealed only very low concentrations of air spora: a cumulative diurnal mean for the whole season of less than 200 pollen grains and just in excess of 9,000 moss and fungal spores. The most frequent pollen types recorded were those of the local taxa: Saxifraga, Salix and Oxyria digyna, whereas the share of pollen of exotic taxa, Betula, Pinus, Juniperus and Alnus, contributed only 9% of the total pollen sum. Back trajectories and pollen registrations at various aerobiological stations in Scandinavia designate central Finland as a possible source area both for the Betula and Pinus pollen. The maximum diurnal mean concentration of Cladosporium was merely 40 spores per m3 air. One may assert that the air at Ny-Alesund is almost free from allergenic pollen and spore types.

Notes: Detection of prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in rose, peach and almond was improved by absorbing the enzyme-conjugated γ-globulin with healthy leaf extracts. Non-specific reactions were reduced markedly, thereby increasing the infected/healthy A405 ratio several-fold. Absorbing the conjugate with peach leaf extract was most effective in lowering the non-specific reaction in peach and rose, especially during the summer. Consequently, absorption of the enzyme conjugate with peach extract is now used in routine indexing for PNRSV in rose and peach.

Notes: Seasonal and storage characteristics of the juice from four red-fleshed grapefruit (citrus paradisi macf.) cultivars; Ruby Red, Henderson, Ray, and Star Ruby were determined and compared in a search for cultivars having juice with less tendency to fade as the fruit matures and on juice storage. Analyses of the single strength processed juice showed the cultivars to be similar except for lycopene and carotene values. Lycopene, the major pigment in pink and red grapefruit, declined 0.75–0.68 mg/100g, 0.36–0.25 mg/100g, 0.36–0.30 mg/100g and 0.14–0.08 mg/100g for Star Ruby, Henderson, Ray, and Ruby Red, respectively, as the season progressed. Storage of processed juice for 12 months revealed no major decrease in lycopene.

Notes: Bathylychnops exilis is an unusual north-eastern Pacific mesopelagic fish of which adults have previously been undescribed and the biology is poorly known. Its sensory and digestive systems are highly modified. Sensory modifications include the equivalent of four functional eyes, well developed nasal rosettes, and lateral line canals up to 4 mm in diameter. Digestive adaptations include a peculiar mouth, large tongue, crumenal organ, and a large caecal stomach. Bathylychnops exilis apparently lacks an anal light organ. Ontogenetic changes occur in the morphology of the head, eyes, body, and coloration. Bathylychnops exilis eats crustaceans and may be medusae and microscopic organisms. Reproduction probably occurs in late summer. Adults occur most commonly at about 500 m depth, possibly in groups, and may be diurnal vertical migrators.

Notes: Removal of the shoot above the primary node (detopping) of 3-week-old bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Contender) altered the metabolism and development of the remaining leaves. An increase in levels of chlorophyll, protein, stomatal opening, photosynthesis and growth, i.e. rejuvenation of primary leaves, was established within 7 days of detopping. These levels were maintained while the primary leaves of equivalent intact plants senesced. The flux of xylem solution (mineral ions, cytokinins and water) into leaves is related to the leaf area to be supplied and root supply capacity; it has been suggested that detopping leads to an increased availability of root-supplied solutes and hence rejuvenation of the remaining leaves. This assumes however that root output of solutes is not decreased by the defoliation treatment. We found that root output of ions (electrical conductivity of passive xylem exudate) in detopped plants was 30% lower than in intact plants after 24 h and 60% lower after 7 days. The output of Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ were similarly reduced 7 and 14 days after detopping as were fresh and dry weights of roots. Furthermore, neither the calculated xylem flux of ions nor directly measured levels of Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ were significantly increased in leaves of detopped plants during their rejuvenation. We therefore conclude that root output is tightly coupled to shoot demand and that the apparent rejuvenation of primary leaves caused by detopping bean plants is not a consequence of increased xylem flux of mineral ions into the leaves.

Notes: . This paper presents a two-sector dynamic model of regional population change. The model contains a migration equation, an earnings equation, and an amenity equation for each region. In the context of this model, migration is seen as a disequilibrium process through which the regional populations move towards equilibrium positions. Migration occurs when one region is perceived to be superior to the other on the basis of its earnings and amenity levels. Equilibrium is achieved when population movements between the regions eliminate any differences in their relative attractiveness. A comparative-static analysis of the model is presented to analyze the effects of policy changes and exogenous shocks on the distribution of population among the regions. We find that positive shocks to regional earnings and to amenity tend to increase the population of a region. However the amenity shocks generate two opposing effects on regional population, with stability of the model requiring that the expansionary effect of the amenity shock outweigh the contractionary effect.

Notes: 1986 sees the 90th anniversary of the publication by the Swedish economist Knut Wicksell's of a path-breaking and prophetic analysis of the failure of the political process. Wicksell's compatriot, the economist Peter Stein, assesses his seminal contribution to the branch of economics that has since become known as ‘Public Choice’.
