    Monocytoid B Cells Are Distinct From Splenic Marginal Zone Cells and Commonly Derive From Unmutated Naive B Cells and Less Frequently From Postgerminal Center B Cells by Polyclonal Transformation (1999)

    Description: Monocytoid B cells represent a morphologically conspicuous B-cell population that constantly occurs in Toxoplasma gondii-induced Piringer’s lymphadenopathy. Although widely believed to be closely related to splenic marginal zone B cells, neither this relationship, nor the B-cell differentiation stage of monocytoid B cells, nor their cellular precursors have been established. We have therefore examined monocytoid B cells for their expression of B-cell differentiation markers and the Ig isotypes at the RNA and protein level as well as for rearranged Ig heavy chain (H) genes and somatic mutations within the variable (V) region. The results obtained were compared with the corresponding features of other B-cell populations. The monocytoid B cells displayed immunophenotypical differences to all other B-cell populations. IgM and IgD expression was absent from most monocytoid B cells at the RNA and protein levels. Unrelated (polyclonal) Ig rearrangements were found in 85 of the 95 cells studied. Seventy-four percent of the rearranged VH genes were devoid of somatic mutations, whereas the remaining 26% carried a low number of somatic mutations. The majority of these showed no significant signs of antigen selection. This finding in conjunction with the predominantly unrelated Ig gene rearrangements indicates that most monocytoid B cells arise not by clonal proliferation but by transformation of polyclonal B cells. The B cells undergoing a monocytoid B-cell transformation are in the majority (74%) naive B cells, and only a minority are (26%) non–antigen-selected postgerminal center B cells. Thus, our data show that monocytoid B cells represent a distinct B-cell subpopulation.

    Notes: Abstract. Simulated estimates of crop yield were made for rainfed rice in a 50 ha dryland rice area. The aim was to investigate how soil units and management units of different sizes with different yields could be used to obtain values for areas of land. Two procedures were applied. First, yields were simulated at six sites, that were representative of six soil mapping units. Second, yields were simulated using soil information from 133 auger sites, and were interpolated over management units using block kriging. Differences between the two procedures for the total area and for a test set of 22 additionally sampled locations were small. A 60% increase in precision was achieved when relatively large management units were defined.A Geographical Information System was used to identify areas with greatest yield potential for rainfed dryland rice. Statistical analysis showed that the six soil units could be grouped into three yield classes. The largest yields were obtained for a sub-area comprising 11% of the survey area which was associated with a slowly permeable Bg horizon in the soil profile.It was concluded that the best procedure for the spatial interpolation of simulated rice yield should be based on preliminary simulation of crop yields. A sensitivity analysis of the impact of weather variability and soil heterogeneity on the variation of yield was useful to detect the importance of their contributions. The procedures developed in this study are of value in obtaining a reliable estimate of average yield, and can consequently be used for associated cost-benefit calculations.

Income is a measure of goods, consumption well-being is measured by equivalent income. An absolute interpretation of equivalent income is argued as the value to persons of consumption well-being after household economies. Guidance is suggested on the choice of equivalence scales, and for the measurement of well-being and inequality.

    Notes: : Micro-policy instruments are often grouped into labour subsidies and capital subsidies. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect on employment of labour and capital subsidies when the wage rate is endogeneous. The problem is studied within a sequential three-stage model, integrating the investment decision, wage-bargaining and the employment decision. The paper demonstrates that labour subsidies may fail, depending on technology and the risk aversion of the workers.

    Notes: Sampling of airborne pollen and spores at Ny-Alesund on Spitsbergen in the summer of 1986, by means of a Burkard pollen and spore trap, revealed only very low concentrations of air spora: a cumulative diurnal mean for the whole season of less than 200 pollen grains and just in excess of 9,000 moss and fungal spores. The most frequent pollen types recorded were those of the local taxa: Saxifraga, Salix and Oxyria digyna, whereas the share of pollen of exotic taxa, Betula, Pinus, Juniperus and Alnus, contributed only 9% of the total pollen sum. Back trajectories and pollen registrations at various aerobiological stations in Scandinavia designate central Finland as a possible source area both for the Betula and Pinus pollen. The maximum diurnal mean concentration of Cladosporium was merely 40 spores per m3 air. One may assert that the air at Ny-Alesund is almost free from allergenic pollen and spore types.

    Notes: Four relative sea-level curves from Edgeøya and Barentsøya are constructed based on 81 radiocarbon age determinations on carefully selected and levelled samples in raised beaches, mostly driftwood embedded in beach gravel. All the dates, covering the period from the deglaciation to the present, are calibrated to calendar years, and the sea-level curves are defined by fitting the data with a least square regression curve. The dates are internally very consistent, and the results are some of the most precise sea-level curves from the Arctic.The four curves are quite similar, and from the marine limit at 85-90 m a.s.l. they show a rapid emergence (ca 40 mm/year), formed about 11,000 cal yrs BP (∼10,00014C yrs BP). A minimum rate of emergence close to 8000 cal years ago is explained by a decreased rate in isostatic uplift parallel with a sustained rate of eustatic sea-level rise. During the last 7000 cal years, the emergence rate has decreased linearly. The uplift rates have been slightly higher on southern Edgeøya than further north during the last 7000 years. By comparing the sea-level curves from Storøya (ca 270 km to the north) and Hopen (ca 150 km to the south), we suggest that a memory of an earlier and larger glacio-isostatic downwarping in the southern Barents Sea is detected in the sea-level curves from Hopen and southern Edgeøya.

    Notes: Livers from 20 bowhead whales taken in subsistence hunts at Barrow, Alaska, were analyzed for essential and non-essential elements. Concentrations of essential elements were similar to those found in other cetaceans. Non-essential element concentrations were generally comparable to other baleen whales and very low compared to most odontocetes. One deviation from this pattern was a relatively high level of hepatic cadmium that may be related to specific dietary factors of this krill-dependent species. No sex-related differences were found in element concentrations. Hepatic cadmium and mercury increased with animal length, and significant positive interelement correlations were found between copper/zinc and mercury/selenium. We found a mercury-toselenium ratio much lower (1:40) than the frequently reported ratio of one to one. The data suggest that further studies of the postulated mercurydetoxifying role of selenium are warranted.
