    Notes: Station W16.1 is a fixed wavelength (1.4 A(ring)) x-ray diffraction station recently constructed and commissioned at the SRS. It has been designed specifically for time-resolved studies of noncrystalline and fibrous materials and optimized for low angle measurements. Wide angle diffraction will also be available with simultaneous small and wide angle scattering/diffraction a future facility. In order to perform dynamic (∼1 ms) low angle measurements on weakly scattering systems, the station design has had to incorporate several novel features so as to achieve the predicted 1×1013 photon/s at the specimen. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new x-ray beamline has recently been built, and is now operational, on dipole magnet 2 of the Synchrotron Radiation Source (SRS) at Daresbury. This beamline takes 32 mrad of horizontal aperture from a central tangent point. The time-resolved x-ray diffraction (TRXD) Station 2.1, takes 17 mrad of horizontal aperture and is the central point of this paper. Beamline 2 has been realized as part of a SERC–MRC agreement.

    Notes: A new instrument for simultaneous small-angle X-ray scattering and rheology experiments on soft solids is described. This device is based on a commercial rheometer with a shear sandwich geometry in which the sample is subjected to a planar oscillatory deformation. This instrument has been used for time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering/rheology experiments at the Synchrotron Radiation Source, Daresbury Laboratory, England. The focus has been in particular on the effect of large-amplitude shearing on the orientation of cubic phases in gels of block copolymers formed in concentrated solutions, and on the bicontinuous cubic phase of a block copolymer melt. Representative results are presented for face-centred cubic (f.c.c.) and body-centred cubic (b.c.c.) phases in gels of poly(oxyethylene)–poly(oxybutylene) diblock copolymers, and for the bicontinuous cubic `gyroid' structure in a poly-(ethylene-alt-propylene)–poly(dimethylsiloxane) di-block copolymer melt. The orientations of the micellar b.c.c. phases in the gels and the gyroid structure (belonging to the b.c.c. space group Ia\bar 3d) following large-amplitude shearing are shown to be the same, i.e. directionally oriented crystals are produced in both cases, in which (111) directions are oriented along the shear direction.

    Notes: A system has been developed which represents a significant advance in the quality and extent of small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering data (SAXS and WAXS) that can be recorded simultaneously with strain data during the drawing and annealing of polymer materials. WAXS data are recorded using a Photonic Science charge-coupled-device area detector and SAXS data using a gas-filled multiwire area detector. Strain data, for the region of the specimen from which the SAXS/WAXS data are collected, are calculated from an accurately synchronized continuously recorded video image of the specimen. The system allows X-ray and video image data to be collected as a series of frames with essentially no `dead-time' between frames. The data are fully two-dimensional and can be collected for a wide range of d spacings. The use of this system to investigate the stress-induced orientation and phase changes during the drawing of a range of grades of commercially available polyethylene is described.

    Notes: Abstract A modified adhesive peel test is described in which a spring is inserted between the test machine cross-head and the peeling strip. In tests using two pressure sensitive surgical adhesives (uncrosslinked elastomers) this “soft machine” gives results which differ significantly from those obtained with a conventional “hard machine”. In particular, when peeling energy is plotted against peeling velocity, the soft machine reveals a regime of low energy peeling and a transition to the normal high energy peeling. The transition behaviour has been studied as a function of adhesive thickness, cross-head speed and spring stiffness. The phenomena revealed by soft machine testing are interpreted in terms of variations in crack-tip radius caused by flow of the uncrosslinked rubber. The practical implication is that far more information can be obtained from soft machine tests than from conventional hard machine tests. The problem of oscillating peel force is also eliminated.

    Notes: Degradation studies on a series of polyesterurethanes having different compositions of hard and soft blocks have been performed utilizing an accelerated test method. Degradation was followed by titrimetry, mass loss, mechanical properties and infrared spectroscopy. As the number of methylene groups present within the polyester moiety was increased, the resistance to degradation also increased. The presence of an aromatic component in the hard block reduced the rate of hydrolysis but the degradation in mechanical properties was accelerated.

    Notes: Abstract It was previously found that upon exposure to high energy radiation, linear polyethylenes experience an increase in the degree of crystallinity [1]. The increase continued monotonically with ageing time [2]. To gain a better understanding of these unexpected results the present paper examines the effects in physical blends of ultra-high molecular weight polyethelyne (UHMW PE) and conventional high density polyethylene (HDPE). No synergistic effects were observed in the blends, but the analysis of the thermal and tensile yield stress data provides some insight into the phenomenon. It provides support for the explanation involving radiation-induced chain-scission followed by recrystallization, and suggests that the chain-scission does not continue with time after initial irradiation.

    Notes: Abstract The failure energy of an adhesive bond can be factorized into two terms, one of which is a dimensionless loss function and the other, the true interfacial bonding energy,θ 0. Experimental techniques have been developed to effect a separation of these two terms and thus measureθ 0, but they are unsuitable for the pressure-sensitive adhesives used in surgical tapes and dressings. This is because these adhesives flow readily under load. This paper describes an extrapolation technique by which this problem can be resolved. Adhesive peel data are extrapolated both to zero peel velocity and zero load, to give a true threshold value for peeling energy which is independent of temperature. Values ofθ 0 are given for a natural-rubber based adhesive and substrates of glass and human skinin vivo. For glassθ 0 = 28J m−2 and for normal skinθ 0 ≃ 14J m-2.
