    Notes: Abstract We show in this paper that the projective d-arrangement ℭ d formed by the facet hyperplanes of a cross-polytope, its hyperplanes of mirror symmetry, and the hyperplane at infinity is simplicial precisely for d≤4. The arrangement ℭ4 is the only simplicial 4-arrangement presently known that does not lie in a natural sequence of analogous arrangements that are simplicial in each dimension. It has flat vector g=〈409, 746, 290, 33〉 and face vector f=〈409, 4104, 12336, 14400, 5760〉.

    Notes: Abstract Branko Grünbaum has observed that the projective d-arrangements formed by the facet hyperplanes of a regular polytope together with some of its hyperplanes of mirror symmetry and possibly the hyperiplane at infinity are sometimes simplicial. We investigate the projective d-arrangements associated in this manner with a cross-polytope. Fourteen such simplicial arrangements are known: three 1-arrangements, four 2-arrangements, six 3-arrangements, and one 4-arrangement. In this paper we prove that no other arrangement so associated with a cross-polytope is simplicial.

    Notes: Summary Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) exerts a broad spectrum of activities which affect the responses of mature B-cells. It strongly inhibits B-cell activation, acts as a B-cell growth factor (BCGF), and also induces final differentiation to immunoglobulin (Ig) production. IFN-γ is deeply involved in the differential control of isotype expression, as it enhances IgG2a production and suppresses both IgG1 and IgE production. Although it is now possible to draw a general scheme of the effects of IFN-γ on B-cells, a number of paradoxical results still exist in the field. In this manuscript, different experimental systems are analyzed in an attempt to explain these apparent paradoxes.

    Notes: Summary Industrial fermentation media are normally sterilized with steam to destroy the indigenous microbial population prior to inoculation with a specific microorganism. Because biological validation of each sterilization cycle is impractical, an ‘overkill’ approach is commonly employed on the basis that alteration of heat-sensitive nutrients is less detrimental than survival of indigenous microbes. However, the heat destruction of microbes is known to be a probability function amenable to calculation. A computer has been programmed to calculate the on-line heat input asF 0 values during sterilization of media in stirred bioreactors. The accumulation ofF 0 values is then announced verbally to bioreactor operators by a communications controller with voice synthesizer.

    Notes: Abstract In July 1985, very fine burrows extending at least to a sediment depth of 50 cm were found in sediments of the Vöring-Plateau, Norwegian continental slope, at depths of 1 261 to 1 969 m. Such burrows have been described from other areas of the oceans, but until now the producers have been unknown. In the box-cores from Vöring-Plateau sipunculans of the genus Golfingia, subgenus Nephasoma, were identified as inhabitants and producers of these “Lebensspuren”, which correspond with the fossil ichnogenus Trichichnus.

    Notes: Abstract The aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases exist as two enzyme families which were apparently generated by divergent evolution from two primordial synthetases. The two classes of enzymes exhibit intriguing familial relationships, in that they are distributed nonrandomly within the codon-amino acid matrix of the genetic code. For example, all XCX codons code for amino acids handled by class II synthetases, and all but one of the XUX codons code for amino acids handled by class I synthetases. One interpretation of these patterns is that the synthetases coevolved with the genetic code. The more likely explanation, however, is that the synthetases evolved in the context of an already-established genetic code—a code which developed earlier in an RNA world. The rules which governed the development of the genetic code, and led to certain patterns in the coding catalog between codons and amino acids, would also have governed the subsequent evolution of the synthetases in the context of a fixed code, leading to patterns in synthetase distribution such as those observed. These rules are (1) conservative evolution of amino acid and adapter binding sites and (2) minimization of the disruptive effects on protein structure caused by codon meaning changes.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Silica diagenesis and carbonate diagenesis are interrelated. This is confirmed by observations of DSDP Sites 462, 463, 465, 466, and 577. Carbonate sediments containing chert (1) tend to be more indurated and display more advanced diagenetic alterations, regardless of sub-bottom depth; and (2) microfossil components are more strongly affected (overgrown and/or dissolved), while the amount of micritic particles and larger, euhedral calcite crystals is greater. In addition, mass physical properties, porosity in particular, vary more widely in sediment sections containing chert. Furthermore, in the studied similarly composed sediments recrystallization of biogenic opal is indicated by a significant reduction of the specific surface area, reaching a minimum value when quartz is formed. One possible mechanism involved is the production of «surplus« dissolved carbonate created by the replacement of carbonate material by silica during the process of chert formation and silicification. The «extra« carbonate is then available for precipitation as overgrowths and cement outside the chert nodules and silicified zones. Hence silica diagenesis, if it occurs early enough in the sediment, bears some influence on carbonate diagenesis. It is therefore suggested that silica diagenesis be added to the list of factors included in the «diagenetic potential« equation ofSchlanger &Douglas (1974).
    Abstract: Résumé L'étude de sédiments provenant des sites DSDP 462, 463, 465, 466 et 577 montre qu'il existe une relation entre la diagenèse de la silice et celle du carbonate biogéniques. Les sédiments carbonatés qui renferment de la silice biogémque présentent: 1) une induration plus marquée et des modifications diagénétiques plus poussées — et ce indépendamment de la profondeur sous la surface du fond; 2) une dissolution et/ou un accroissement plus développés des micro-fossiles; 3) une plus grande teneur en particules micritiques et une plus grande taille des calcites idiomorphes; 4) un éventail plus large de leurs propriétés physiques, particulièrement de la porosité et des paramètres qui en dépendent. La cristallisation de l'opale biogénique, dans des sédiments de compositions semblables, se traduit par une réduction drastique de la surface spécifique, qui atteint une valeur minimale lorsque du quartz est formé. Un rôle diagénétique important est joué par l'excès de carbonate dissous engendré par la silicification de coquilles carbonatées; cet excès de carbonate est dès lors disponible pour la précipitation des auréoles d'accroissement et du ciment hors des nodules de chert et des zones silicifiées. Il s'ensuit que la diagenèse du SiO2 biogénique influence la diagenèse du carbonate. Il conviendrait dès lors d'ajouter la diagenèse de la silice à la liste des facteurs qui interviennent dans l'équation du «potentiel diagénétique» deSchlanger etDouglas (1974).
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Diagenese von biogenem Silikat und Karbonat steht in engem Zusammenhang, wie Beobachtungen an Sedimenten der DSDP Sites 462, 463, 465, 466 und 577 zeigen. Karbonatische Sedimente, die biogenes SiO2 enthalten, zeichnen sich aus durch (1) größere Verfestigung und stärkere diagenetische Veränderungen — unabhängig von der Tiefe im Sediment, (2) mehr Lösung und Überwuchs an Mikrofossil-Komponenten, (3) höheren Anteil mikritischer Partikel wie auch größerer idiomorpher Kalzitkristalle, (4) stärkere Variation der sedimentphysikalischen Eigenschaften, speziell der Porosität und damit zusammenhängender Parameter. Die Umkristallisation des biogenen SiO2 führt in ähnlich Zusammengesetzen Sedimenten zu einer drastischen Abnahme der spezifischen Oberfläche. Minimalwerte werden erreicht, wenn sich Quarz bildet. Diagenetisch wichtig ist die Produktion von zusätzlichem Karbonat durch die Silizifizierung von Karbonatschalen. Dieses »Überschuß«-Karbonat wird dann als Überwuchs, Zement oder außen an den »Hornstein«-Aggregaten gefällt. Demzufolge beeinflußt die Diagenese von biogenem SiO2 auch die Karbonatdiagenese. Daher ist es sinnvoll, die Diagenese von biogenem SiO2 mit zu den Faktoren zu rechnen, die das »diagenetische Potential« — wie esSchlanger &Douglas (1974) definierten — ausmachen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Laboratory experiments, statistical analysis of field data and theoretical models are combined in the attempt to derive standard compaction curves for various deep-sea sediments which are in compaction equilibrium with the overburden. A revised and generalized version of Athy's law together with laboratory experiments allows the classification of sediments in terms of the amount of porewater structurally bound to the particles' surfaces. Especially suction pressure experiments are useful in quantifying the forces that bind water on the particle surfaces. The sediments analyzed almost range from systems of »suspended grains« to nearly perfect »colloidal systems«. The methods and equations required to derive the relevant parameters are given for both, downhole porosity/density measurements and laboratory experiments.
    Abstract: Résumé A partir d'une synthèse de résultats d'expériences de laboratoires, d'analyses statistiques de données de terrain et d'une modélisation théorique, il est possible d'établir des courbes standard du processus de compaction pour divers types de sédiments de mer profonde, pour lesquels la compaction est en équilibre avec la charge. Une version revue et généralisée de la loi d'Athy permet, en accord avec les résultats expérimentaux, de classer les sédiments selon la quantité d'eau intersticielle liée structuralement à la surface des particules. Les sédiments analysés correspondent à des systèmes qui vont du type à «grains suspendus» à des colloïdes presque parfaits. Les auteurs présentent une discussion détaillée des méthodes et des équations néssaires à l'obtention des paramètres significatifs tant à partir des expériences de laboratoire qu'à partir des mesures de porosité/densité effectuées dans les forages.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Synthese experimenteller Labordaten, statistischer Analysen von Messungen an Kernen und theoretischer Modellierung der Kompaktion im Gleichgewicht mit der Auflast ermöglicht die Definition von Typ-Kurven für das Kompaktionsverhalten von verschiedenen Tiefsee-Sedimenten. Eine erweiterte und verbesserte Form der Athy'schen Gleichung erlaubt zusammen mit Laborexperimenten, Sedimente entsprechend des Anteils an strukturell gebundenem Porenwasser zu klassifizieren. Anhand von Saugspannungsexperimenten können die Bindungskräfte zwischen Wasser und Partikeloberflächen abgeschätzt werden. Die untersuchten Sedimente reichen von »suspendierten Körnern« bis zu einem »kolloidalen System«. Die notwendigen Methoden und Gleichungen zur Bestimmung der relevanten Parameter aus Bohrlochdaten und Laborexperimenten werden diskutiert.
